The Jade bonsai forest takes shape as I arrange and plant the Crassula ovata "Gollum" trees. Today's update is my Schefflera bonsai in the Vietnam style 3D printed pot and stand.

Great. I had waited for a crassula ovata video. Succulents are being underestimated as bonsai.

If I could afford Pumice all the time I would use it over Perlite, only because it's a little heavier, and much less dusty. Perlite is an amazing aerator though, and basically the same in composition. Fun fact that I just learned about the mining/consumption of crude Perlite in the United States, is that New Mexico (my home town) is the leader in this industry for our country. I always knew we were a mining state, but never thought that much so. On a side note Nigel, if you were to narrate audio-books I would purchase every book that you narrated. You have so much character in your voice, and it always makes your videos that much more enjoyable ^.^ Merry Christmas!

I lost 3 trees to my brothers dogs. I don't have good soil , so to be sure the will survive the winter and the dog's I made a green house after a week we had snow I made it just in time. I didn't use chemicals for my Rose's I used a recipe that I found online that was friendly to the environment and the dog's. Thank you for inspiring me to start bonsais to!

......and so another Bonsai journey begins. I like that you are using ‘gollum’ crassulas. Their leaf shape is unusual and might lend itself to Bonsai better that plain C. ovata. Interesting to see your arbicola putting out so many air roots indoors. I wonder if your Ficus trees will follow suit. I remember you mentioned that previously your Ficus air roots did not grow well indoors, in winter.

Thank you, the birth of another forest. I'm very excited to develop it! The aerial roots grow best on sunny days. The temperature in the plant room goes up and the air can hold a lot of water. This humidity starts the aerial roots growing like crazy!

Just keep removing the lower leaves to keep it growing upright and it will develop well! You can always prune the top back after you get some lower branches.

how rapidly do the trunks of P. afra thicken? i have some little ones that i'd like to plant as bonsai someday
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
If you just let them grow, they will grow long and the branches will flop over almost like a ground cover. Don't prune them for the entire summer and in the fall, you will notice the trunk has gotten thicker. Lots of growth equals a thick trunk after it is pruned back.

Can you explain what would happen, if you water them directly after repotting them? Why do think it is necessary to wait for at least 3 weeks ?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
If you water them right away, the soil would stay wet. The plants have no leaves, so they don't need any water. We have had a very cloudy winter so far and without sunshine the soil never seems to dry out much. The roots would most likely start to rot in these conditions and possibly the trunks too. I will lightly mist then when the new leaves start to emerge, but I'll keep the soil dry until they can start to use more water.

Hi Nigel, From your nice video I learned that the Jade can be re potted now. What about Japanese pines and Citrus trees? Can I re pot them now? Thank you for your guidance.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the conditions after the operation. If you can give the tropical trees good warmth, light and humidity, they should do fine. Pines are best done in spring when the buds are swelling.

Hello Nigel: I have recently re-potted my Epiphyllum plant ( its winter season in Pune-India, temperature remain between 14 to 28 degree Celsius and humidity between 30-40% throughout day and plant is kept outside in northern side of terrace), after re-potting the new growth (tiny leaf) died. I did some pruning to roots while re-potting and did not water it immediately considering little wet soil mixture used. Since I saw leaf died after re-potting and considering problem could be because of not watering the plant, I have watered it thoroughly. Can you advise, what could have possibly gone wrong in re-potting ?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
It may be the time of year, I find it best to re pot succulent plants when it is hot and humid outside. They tend to recover quickly and resume growing. It sounds like you did everything correctly, it just might be too cool.

I usually use 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface (by volume) I sift the soil to remove the dust and fine particles. This gives me a finished particle size of 1/8" or 3 to 4 mm. I will some times add 10 to 20 percent composted pine bark if I have some on hand. Usually I don't! The soil gets watered and fertilized at the same time. I always add a pinch of powdered 20-20-20 fertilizer to my 2 liter watering can.

I'm currently working on a jade forest myself. Too afraid to defoliate.
@TheBonsaiZone

Be sure the soil is dry before defoliation, once the leaves are off, the tree won't use much water. Too wet a soil and the roots will start to rot.
