On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we will be comparing the performance of the 44 magnum to the 50 AE on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points, for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 10 yards. Thanks for watching!

Big thing that started me on revolvers way back when was letting me drop the brass into my dump pouch. Paying full price for starline and hornady brass then seeing it fly out and get claimed by the range got old real quick. As a young buck starting out, I would never have been able to afford to shoot if it wasn't for that lee hand press. Especially once I got started with 454 and other less common rounds

Heres my feelings on the .50 ae DE: Its the GOAT of semi auto handguns as long as its well maintained and lubricated. Its a special application gun, definitely not your EDC. With how heavy it is, the recoil is not terrible and very managebale with good technique. I personally shoot very accurately and quickly with a .50 ae DE and I really like the power of the cartridge and the ergonomics of the gun with my larger hands. Overall its not pointless. Its a serious tool and a fun gun to shoot at the range. Well worth its price for the right shooter.

A coworker's father died. He asked if I wanted one of his Desert Eagles. Dad had a new series 50AE and the older series in 44M. He decided to keep the 50 for gimmick's sake. The 44M w. Aimpoint 2000 red dot outshoots my Ruger Bisley Hunter with 2x Burris scope and original Colt Anaconda w/ factory sights. I'm glad he kept the 50 AE. I have a ton of 44M brass and bullets. Racking the slide with that giant Aimpoint on it is a PITA, especially now that I'm about to turn 65. Neat thing, I have an Aimpoint 1000 which I think is the original red dot and now the 2000. Those are the only APs I have and bought are long outdated. I thought about mounting a Trijicon RMR to it, but had the flicker issue with it on a Glock G40 MOS. If it couldn't withstand 10mm isn't wasn't going to withstand 44M. Later, I after all the flicker issues, Trijicon stated the RMR was never designed for semi-auto pistol use, but as an aux sight for ARs. So the old AP2k remains to this day. Sadly, the front sight was removed to mount the AP2k and lost. It was not in the box with the gun and cleaning kit.

I assume the Desert Eagle outshoots most handguns because it's basically a mini rifle, with rotating Johnson/Stoner style bolt. Most semi-autos more powerful than .32 or .380 are recoil operated, with the tilting barrel introducing imprecision. As for revolvers, the bullet jumping the cylinder gap and hitting the forcing cone probably ruins the potential for high precision. For normal handgun applications, neither recoil operation nor jumping the cylinder gap is-as Paul Harrell would say-enough difference to make a difference; but from a rest, with a scope (or red dot and good eyes), I'm not surprised you'd notice. Oh, and Trijicon released a "type 2" RMR to fix flicker issues. You might also be able to fix it with an anti-flicker sealing plate.

454 Casull gets overlooked because, frankly, it isn't top dog anymore. It is a hard to find, wildcat round (meaning, created by modifying another round) that very few handguns use, all of them revolvers. It's only real claim to fame is that it was the most powerful handgun cartridge in the world. As a result, it has been totally overshadowed by the more powerful, and ironically easier to find SW 500.
@Bumstead40
@Bumstead40 Ай бұрын
I love 454 Casull because the revolver is significantly less weight that either the SW 500 or SW 460, so I'll actually carry it while in the woods. 454 Casull's also often hold 6 rounds instead of 5 like the SW 500/460's. 454 Casull also has almost twice the energy of 44 Mag. And you can shoot 45 colt out of a 454 Casull revolver for plinking. 454 Casull in the real world is incredibly versatile and not just a range. Just my option. But I enjoy them all.

@2:55 - DE owner here. The slide doesn't lock back when you limp-wrist it. It's simply your grip, the pistol needs a super tight and firm hold throughout the action, it took many many times at the range to get it right for me. There is *PLENTY* of power to cycle the action from the bolt discharge gas, it's all about the grip. I thought mine wasn't cycling correctly until I kept shooting one round at a time to keep practicing the grip, it's a very difficult platform to shoot overall. You limp wristed the crap outta that shot, you can even see in the slow motion shot where your left-hand comes off and the pistol goes to 60+' in the air. 🤷‍♂

Since I own the same firearm, one could assume I know about it, despite some other semi-auto platforms having similar issues. My DE is chambered in 357 so no power play here, it is simply “operator error” I was pointing out. You can clearly see that at the time stamp above, his left stabilizing hand came off the pistol. I hear people say the 50 is too much cost and recoil where you cant enjoy it and people traded down who actually liked to shoot them a lot. @@Almost_Made_It Eh I bought mine at half price of a new one. That is still more than most autoloaders yes but its a big value for a DE. Had I got any of the others at that same price id still be a swell value. On the flipside, i I had to pay retail for them, sure maybe id splurge and do it big. Yeah, using the same loads, some hot 158gr plated handloads. I think the reason the recoil seems more is feel vs.. i dunno the joules etc. The revolver has a lower bore axis, the DE has the slide chunking back- your hand twists more and I think theres more muzzle flip, and could give the impression of more recoil. Kinda like how some flat triggers gives the impression of a lighter pull (and of course, most flat triggers do have an actual lighter pull but you know what im saying)

Even the stores that carry the 340gr +p+ only have a small bunch on hand when compared to the 240gr standards. Even then 50ae pushes a 350 at 1400+, still edges it out slightly. Getting the deagle in 50 is a nice treat. You shoudn't need to worry about reliability though, it's not a huge stack of rounds and reliable magazines for rimmed cartridges up to 10 rounds have been around for a damn long time. Best reason to get a deagle in 50 rather than 44 is that if you're thinking about practicality, reliability, etc, you won't be having to compare it directly with a wheelgun of the same chambering. It was years after I inquired about the 50AE Desert Eagle Mark series. Some of the earliest pistols were manufactured in Israel. U.S. variant DE pistols have MR at the beginning of the serial number Israeli versions do not . If you research the companies (I.W.I.) Israeli Weapons Industry and (I.M.I.) Israeli Military Industry they explain the translation of the different organizations and small arms. The BFR Revolver and accuarized rifles are uniquely magnum research.. I believe Karr Arms is the current distributor of the shitty current polimer framed pistols . These pistols were definitely used at Israeli checkpoints for anti material use for suicide bombers vehicles.

Heck, if I somehow got a free Desert Eagle .44 Magnum I would probably trade it almost immediately for a Ruger Redhawk Alaskan in .44 Magnum. After running a box of ammo through the Eagle,of course. I mean, at that point it would already be considered used/pre-owned even if never fired so I may as well have some fun. @glandhound
@glandhound Ай бұрын
Rifling and friction cancel each other out. Rifling adds rotation, so more contact the bullet has with the barrel but at the same time rifling also reduces the amount of barrel to have contact to as the bullet never touches the rifling. I don't think twist rate adds penetration per se, depends on how you measure it. The right twist rate makes the trajectory flatter which usually means more purely horizontal penetration. However if you measure penetration perpendicular to the wound channel - the penetration is probably equal. There is also the case of too much twist, it's not as simple as more twist = more penetration. Macroscopic physics is rarely linear like that.
