Cora is trying to breathe new life into her mother's bookstore, but when time begins to run out, she turns to magic. Alongside a group of desert mystics, Cora sets in motion a powerful prayer, leading her to the ultimate discovery that change blooms from within.
Filmed in Joshua Tree, our story was helmed a group of women filmmakers.

Please don’t think I’m trying to be rude, but Amelia told a very powerful, self-contained (as great as a series would be) and a clearly defined story with Desert Prayer: Her character, Cora, resented that her mother Faye is selling the family business; particularly to a buyer her boyfriend Henry knows. She’s blinded by rage, to the point where she actually cheats the spell due to the fact that her flower wasn’t blooming. She found a cactus that bloomed and replaced her dormant one for that one. Because of this, her “Prayer” is answered with Monkey’s Paw consequences: Henry has a heart attack and dies. Valerie Eagle Heart and the other women could tell something was “off” with Cora. You can hear it in the cautionary way they spoke to her. It’s Amelia’s brilliant spin- with a story she said she wrote from something personal she herself had to deal with- on that old adage: “Be careful what you wish for… you may get it.”

This really resonated with me. My mum is in an abusive relationship with a man who controls what she’s allowed to eat and who she’s allowed to talk to and when she was diagnosed with cancer he upped and left because he couldn’t be bothered to handle it so I looked after her all on my own, whilst simultaneously dealing with her pining over her awful bf. she got better and let him move back in and I moved out but now he’s ill and she’s fawning over him and I’m finding it really difficult not to scream at her like, he’d never, ever do this for you! What I’m trying to say is, as much as “cursing” him would be satisfying, I harbour no hatred because that’s not helpful to anyone. Love you, Amelia. -kingviolet
