Here in Australia, we just bury a deep bucket/bin to its lip in a sandy area, with a piece of canvas or tarp 10 feet or so long and stake it so its vert and taught so it goes over the centre of the bucket/bin. Snakes, lizards mice whatever just run along the tarp canvas fence till they get to the bucket and fall in. So simple and will just keep on working, great way to see what lives in a area.

Horny Toad!!! Thanks for displaying him, Bob. I recall chasing them 55 years ago in SA. They are almost wiped out. Living in Austin, '85 - '11, and in or near the reptile business 10 of those years, I saw exactly zero. That was such a beauty to see still out there, wild. Fire ants have nearly wiped them out, as they stand still while ant attack them when they climb an ant nest.

I lived in Phoenix for 2 years and wandered the desert in search of critters for fun. What I found: Chuckwallas, baby Zebra-tail lizard, baby Desert Tortoise, young Big Horn Sheep, Rattlesnake staring down a Jack-rabbit, Tarantula, huge Bull-frogs at night, Clark's Spiny lizard, Mountain Lion (I could hear it but not see it - it was stalking me). Lots of things out there, but often hard to find. I'm sure they see and avoid us before we find them. Those traps sure make it easy.

Hey Bob, we used to gather crickets for fishing back east by hollowing out a small loaf of bread, leaving the crust and a small entrance hole, and would come back the next morning to a 'bread container' full of bait. I wonder if you might use a similar concept here, and toss in a half slice of bread into each of those traps, which would bring in whatever kinds of insects or lizards, which in turn would bait the snakes to your traps there?

Stink Bugs. I was in a Little League baseball dugout one time and 2 big ones were crawling across the floor. I'm a "country boy" so I knew to let em keep crawling. One of the "city boys" stomped em before I could speak. We piled out of the dugout like the firealarm had gone off. Team manager didn't have a clew but he did know the third baseman had a funky odor about him. I laughed so hard. Dugout was ruined for the day. We were down by 3 in bottom of 4th of 5 inning game with the top of their line coming up so manager forfeited the game. Skunks don't have anything worse than stink bugs for the size.

I love how you explained their role in the ecosystem. I live in Southwest Texas alongside The Mexican border and a lot of people here would rather kill the animal then let it go yes many of these creatures are scary and can be dangerous on their own but they have a role to play without them there would be more pests and we are already at the top of the food chain so there's no need to mess with nature. So refreshing to see someone let them go and give them respect

They have a centipede in Afghanistan that has the same venom of a pit viper but not enough to kill you. One tagged a friend of mine in his bed, it got him on his right thumb. I have never heard a grown man cry like that. The medics pumped him full of pain meds until they couldn't push anymore for fear of killing him. He was sick and in severe pain for a week. Centipedes are not to be messed with.
