Extra tip: If you bend the shovel head at 90 degrees and place the handle in the dirt alongside your latrine, you have a comfortable place to sit one cheek (on the backside of the shovel head).

James, when it comes to reviewing products for bushcraft and survival and demonstrating applicable usage IMHO you're one of the best. I've always liked how no matter what the product is you seem to be able to adopt and adapt it to your natural surroundings. Your choices of background music draw us in sustaining our attention. Well done, brother.

My grandfather had one of these from his army days back in 1942. We still have it unless my brother lost it! It go a lot of use throughput the years and was kept in the trunk of the car... 🙂

Great review James! Really like the way U put a tool through it's paces. Also..the soap was a good tip that I've used on other tools just not a shovel. Look forward to more survival videos. Keep up the great work.

James.... the ancient US Army Entrenching tool of Vietnam and WWII fame, is in my opinion, a far superion tool. However it's heavier than the SOG but stronger built. If you are driving and need a shovel for getting stuck, take a regular size "D" handle shovel. Weight is not a problem in a vehicle and the larger tools are far more practical. Nice video.... thanks for sharing. Ax

Alright now I have to hunt down some yucca in the desert next time I head out to my other house in Anza borrego deserts. It's been killer with the heat so I've stayed at the mountains for the time being but I miss the sand, it's my other home away from home :) great review on that SOG shovel and awesome job on the Dakota/latrine and root hygiene. Your vids always are full of information and are fun to watch

A Dakota Fire Hole is very cool and from experience can be a bit more difficult to build in sand. Great job and great tunes from the Black Crow! BTW, you could always file a 90 degree onto the side opposite the serrations.
@JunkyardFox8 жыл бұрын
yes its very tricky with sand but once it starts burning ,the fire hardens the tunnel. im glad ye enjoyed the video!

Very challenging to make a sturdy dakota fire hole in that sandy soil. Would collapse very easily. Good latrine hole. Thanks James.

ye just gotta be patient and careful. once its lit, the heat will harden the walls a bit.

How would you compare to a military surplus folding shovel? I've used my surplus shovel as a small fry pan with good results. I just clean and treat my shovel head like you woulda cast iron pan. Like you, I keep one in my truck and wife's car at all times. Has helped us when getting stuck in the mud or snow.
@JunkyardFox8 жыл бұрын
this is the very first folding shovel ive ever tested so im not sure how those two compare yet. defintely has a place in survival.

Literally used this shovel for the 1st time, brand new, yesterday. It broke the second time I had to use it, which is a shame because I love the design. The screwing part is fucked.
@JunkyardFox7 жыл бұрын
really? damn, i used this one for 3 weeks before filming. be sure to contact SOG for the warranty, somthing mightve been defective in the factory.

These have a lifetime warranty. Mine broke after a month's use and I contacted SOG and I returned it to them and paid for the shipping but they sent me back a brand new one.

At least a Dakota fire pit is possible in the sand. In the hill country it is not possible because there are too many rocks in the soil.
