@Sableagle
@Sableagle 5 жыл бұрын
@@mountainhobo It means "buttered bread table," really. Well, "butter-lump(-implicitly-on-bread-because-nobody-just-eats-butter-off-the-spoon)-table." A buffet is just the piece of furniture, from a French word for a bench, stool or sideboard. We used to have a sort of firmly-stuffed leather cube for use as a seat, and it was called a buffet, pronounced "buff it." I don't think anyone uses those or calls them than any more, though. The "buff-fé" is the sideboard, the table along the side of the room. You could call that meal a Smörgåsbufet, if you wanted to.

@Sableagle -- The point is, it was a style of serving, not a meal, unless you eat a table at regular intervals.

@@mountainhobo At least in my experience it has been kind of both, as in it's specifically a buffet style serving of sandwiches (the "open" kind, with bread only on the bottom), basically just a table full of bread, butter and toppings you can use to build sandwiches. I think it was only last year that I heard anyone use smörgåsbord for something that wasn't specifically a sandwich buffet, and they were from an English speaking country.

Karl and Ian talk about it briefly during their gear conclusions video for Hard as Hell 2 Gun 2017 at around the 26m 30s mark - both found it to be a touch better than 55gr Tula in terms of reliability and accuracy. Out of a 16" barrel, I've clocked 75gr Tula at 2428 average fps, and anecdotally I'm inclined to agree with them that 75gr Tula is about the best when it comes to the ammo available for about 20-30 cents per round.

I think this gun is cool. Id probably use it in 5.56 but I think I would get the 308 barrel to incase I wanted to shoot some 308 in it. Not a fan of owning a lot of guns but this seems like a good gun to toy around with and get geeky with two calibres. I know the AR platform has way more options but I prefer the way a pull pup feels myself in those that I've shot. It just fits my body type better IMO. Interesting results. I feel like the higher reliability might have been caused by the 556 version having more rearward space for the BCG to travel (due to the same receiver also having to accommodate 308) and it is safe to overgas the gun a bit without the bolt slamming into the back of the receiver. Extra space may have also provided the ejection mechanism enough time to actuate.

I understand you casually mention in the beginning of the video the gun is caliber "5.56", but you never expressly state what specific caliber the barrel is rated for. This is a consideration as your test ammunition appears to be caliber .223, with the exception of the M855A1. Why no substantial test with SS109 or M855? Especially if this firearm is designed with future military applications in mind. Are there markings stamped on the barrel with rate of twist and caliber?

I don't like haters and trolls so please take this just as constructive criticism and for future reference for anyone else who reads this. When testing lighter loads like this for reliability, make sure to use full mags. The extra tension from the magazine spring slightly retards the energy in the action and can cause issues that might not otherwise be seen with mags only loaded 10-15.

I thought steel cased ammo problems generally involved firing a lot of steel cased ammo, followed by brass cased ammo. The idea being that the steel cases do not expand and seal as well and cause the chamber to get dirtier than normal. The following brass cases do expand, and can then get stuck in the dirtier than usual chamber. To get the problem to show up, you generally need to fire more than a few steel cased rounds?

That puts the bolt/barrel line (and mag) lower in the receiver compared to an AR. Most new bullpups are like this. Conventional piston guns usually aren't though since they can just raise the sight platform to accommodate the piston because the action doesn't have to run all the way through the stock like a bullpup.

That's been the general understanding, but I've seen videos by Military Arms Channel and A Regular Guy that indicated (to my satisfaction, at least) that the real problem is carbon fouling, allowed by the less ductile steel cases. Whatever the cause actually is, diligent chamber cleaning controls the problem, IF you shoot steel-cased ammo.

If it has to do with friction then is it possible to have a self adjusting gas system which provided more or less pressure against the bolt depending on the position of the bolt? I'm new this stuff maybe I'm talking nonsense.
@mkultraification
@mkultraification 5 жыл бұрын
Brass cases expand on firing, then bounce back away from the chamber walls a bit. Steel cases expand and stay that way. This creates a lot of friction. 308 is a high pressure cartridge. It runs around 15,000 psi more than 5.56. The case also has more surface area. When steel .308 cases get stuck in the chamber, they really get stuck. You'll find stories and pictures of guns "blown up" by steel case 308. I've witnessed a couple. The guns don't actually blow up. What really happens is that the case gets stuck partway out of the chamber during cycling and the head is torn off, releasing pressure into the action. This blows the magazine out, and damages stocks, but the gun is usually intact. The hk91 and clones have fluted chambers, which bleed gas pressure around the case and break the adhesion. This mitigates the problem. It also helps that the blowback system uses the case as a sort of gas piston, which means that the extractor isn't pulling on the case head and doesn't rip it off.

What makes steel cased ammo not work in the .308 configuration?
@LinkHyrule03

.308 is pickier and harder to get to run reliably. There are a ton of technical nitty gritty reasons for that, if you really want me to explain. But be warned, it'd be a wall of text.

@@stilllife8 Oh boy here we go. Simply put the .308 had problems that the .223 doesn't suffer from. Reasons .308 has problems: 1) In general, due to the greater power involved, the higher pressures, the increased length of extraction needed, the higher pressures involved, and the size of the cartridge, .308 in general takes more effort and engineering to cycle properly. There's a reason that even cheap AR-15's in .223 run reliably while it takes some serious effort and money to get a .308 AR to run reliably. And the ones that do run reliably are generally built SUPER tough and then over gassed. The SCAR is notably overgassed, and is known to wreck optics. 2) In the MDR, this gets exacerbated by the MDR's need for more gas than normal. Why does it need more gas? Because of the points below. 3) Due to the stiffness and design of the pall in the ejection chute that holds the cartridge, the scissor ejection mechanism must be actuated with gusto, with some serious umph. If the scissor mechanism doesn't get enough umph, it will fail to clip the cartridge into the pall that holds the cartridge in the ejection chute. 4) The scissor ejection mechanism is operated near the end of the stroke. Almost every other gun ejects the cartridge soon after extraction, flicks it out, and then has a healthy dose of bolt over-travel with which to extend the recoil impulse and reduce shock. That helps them run far more reliably with different loads, as the extra umph from more powerful loads just goes into a little more bolt over-travel. But with an MDR, like a Kel Tec KSG, almost all of the important things in an MDR happen near the end of the travel of the action. And then it just stops. So you don't get the grace of the bolt over-travel and you NEED lots of umph at the end of the bolt travel. 5) Because of those reasons, the MDR has to have the bolt flying backward with plenty of energy when the scissor mechanism is actuated. In order to get that level of energy out of the bolt when it actuates the scissor mechanism, the bolt velocity must be notably higher than normal. That means it has to be notably overgassed compared to conventional .308 rifles. 6) Because it needs to be overgassed, it really relies on full power ammo. Most steel case ammo is notably weaker than normal. Thus, steel would short-stroke the action. But when a normal rifle short strokes, it might rechamber the empty cartridge, maybe double feed, or just stovepipe. When the MDR's scissor mechanism doesn't get enough umph (like from a low powered steel case round), it pushes the cartridge across the bolt face, and towards the pall in the ejection chute. But it doesn't have enough umph to clip the cartridge into the pall, which is supposed to hold it in place. So the cartridge, no longer held by the bolt, but also not held by the ejection chute pall, is just kinda loose inside the action, kinda off to the side of the bolt. This will obviously cause a malfunction. This is also why removing the side panel removes that issue. The scissor still works properly, but it no longer needs that much umph to get it into the pall. The ejection chute system really does require quite a bit more gas in order to function properly. 7) The sad part is that early .308 MDR's were so overgassed to solve this issue (so that they COULD cycle low powered steel ammo) that they had such a violent bolt velocity that they would shear through brass rims if the brass wasn't strong enough. And consequently, they also beat themselves up. 8) The short stroke piston gets knocked backward a very short distance and inertia needs to carry it the rest of the way. But the distance and time over which the piston is receiving energy is very small, thus its acceleration backwards is very violent. 9) Because Desert Tech needed the design to accommodate both .308 AND .223 (and allow the gun to have left-right swappable ejection, to boot), the extractor is somewhat smaller than is normal for a .308 semi-auto rifle. Due to a smaller than normal extractor (which has since been rectified in .308), old MDR's had less surface area with which the extractor would contact the rim. 10) The dwell time on the .308 MDR is quite short compared to what .308 normally gets. As such, pressure is still quite high as it tries to extract the cartridge. So what does .223 do differently? 1) .223 semi-autos in general, including AR's, are just SO much easier to get to run reliably. It really is quite easy. Possibly due to a shorter case, the scissor mechanism can be actuated sooner, but I haven't measured mine. 2) .223 needs WAY less gas in order to cycle the action. It's also lower pressure and less powerful. 3) The pall stiffness problem seems to have been worked out with .223. 4) With .223, you can happily have a smoother bolt acceleration and still have enough energy to hit that scissor mechanism with gusto. 5) Again, .223 needs less gas and is lower pressure than .308. 6) .223 steel is also weaker, but it seems that the difference between full-power .223 and steel .223 isn't as large as the difference between full-power .308 and steel .308. 7) See the above reasons. Also, .223 is far less abusive to guns than .308 is. 8) Compared to other .223 rifles, the .223 extractor is on par with or even a little larger in size, solving the extractor engagement issue. 9) The dwell time for the .223 MDR is pretty normal for a .223 rifle. All of these reasons add up so that the .223 MDR really doesn't have the worst problems that the .308 MDR had. Further, the .223 MDR has benefited from all of the rolling changes made over the course of 2-3 years, in which they were ironing out and improving the .308 MDR. The .223 MDR gets to start life with all those improvements, which are huge. If you want a wall of text for all the rolling changes made to the .308 MDR, just ask.

You asked for wall of text, so I'll just assume you want to know the changes. I had a huge write up about all the rolling changes, but I can't find it now. I guess I'll have to recompile it later. This is just off the top of my head for now, so I might miss some things or have some details wrong: 1) There have been at least two changes to the handguard. First, they supposedly improved the quality of the polymer to avoid breakage issues. Then they implemented the hole in the side to access the gas valve. 2) The gas valve has seen at least three changes. Relatively early on, they implemented a cut in the gas valve so you could adjust it with a screwdriver from the front. Then there's the 2018 gas valve and finally the 2019 gas valve. So there are four generations: Initial release, improved, 2018, and 2019. 3) The extractor has had two updates I think. The first was a QC improvement, and the second was widening it. 4) The barrel, barrel extension, and chamber process was revised. Something about bad chambers early on. 5) They have supposedly done work to lighten up the magazine releases. While this wasn't a documented rolling change, I have heard multiple new users report that their magazine releases are lighter, so I presume they changed something. 6) MDR's used to require a break-in period, with specific instructions. They changed some things and the break-in period is a thing of the past. 7) They've made material improvements across the board. I'd presume that the polymer of the lower was improved along with the handguard's polymer. One user reported having the charging handle dent/damage/gall the aluminum receiver at the point of impact on the forward stroke. I'd heard that this was corrected, presumably with better anodizing. 8) I think they made minor changes to the ejection chute, particularly the pall that holds the shell. Recent owners aren't saying it's as absurdly sharp and pointed as it was before. 9) The holes where the take-down pins go through were reinforced, solving the cracking problems when overgassed. I'd heard many different pins also got reinforced. 10) According to one Desert Tech employee regarding how tight the flashhiders used to be "we fired Hercules and got a torque wrench". While this is obviously humorous, I'd wager what he really meant is that they changed the amount of torque applied to the flashhiders. 11) My memory might be failing me, but I remember them changing something about the trigger group. I think it was the loop thing that the transfer bar linkage attaches to. 12) Many users used to report having MDR's with reciprocating charging handles. They aren't supposed to reciprocate. They changed something in there, such that I have yet to hear about this issue from any new units. 13) Better quality control across the board. Their QC has gotten better and better over the past 2 years. 14) Better customer service. They keep improving and getting better and better with customer service. This is just from memory and a good amount is just speculation based on people reporting problems, Desert Tech saying they fixed the problem, and then people not having problems after that. If you want specific technical data about the three different .308 gas valves and the measurements of their holes, here you go: Original 2017 gas valve for .308: S (Suppressed) - 0.030" N (Normal) - 0.041" A (Adverse) - 0.049" 2018 6-position gas valve for .308: 1 - 0.015" 2 - 0.026" 3 - 0.037" 4 - 0.041" (note that position 4 is the same as the original's N/Normal setting) 5 - 0.044" 6 - 0.049" (note that position 6 is the same as the original's A/Adverse setting) 2019 6-position gas valve for .308: 1 - 0.018" S - 0.029" (designated as S) 3 - 0.042" N - 0.049" (designated as N) 5 - 0.052" A - 0.055" (designated as A) I have not measured the .223 gas valve yet.

from purely an "outside view with no engineering quals" (yes i know!, who the hell am i know to say something!!) if their having problems with the 7.62 but not 5.56 would that not suggest a tolerance issue or something along those lines? i sincerely wish them all the best though its not easy to produce a new firearm to the market these days. and to InRange, thanks for doing what you do

I think that due to the larger case and bullet it allows a much larger absolute variance(while being the same range in terms of percentage) of performance. Since it's the same system, the larger variance in the .308 could cause problems the .223 doesn't have.
