Dodge Dart Brake Caliper Noise

We deal with a variety of noise related concerns that can come rolling in to the garage. This Dodge Dart was no exception as an odd rattle was clearly evident from the front of the vehicle.
Driving over rough patches of road surfaces and speed bumps was when the culprit noise concern would rear its ugly head.
A simple road test over speed bumps and we were able to distinguish the rattle and isolate a general area from the wheels as to were it was coming from.
Getting the vehicle hoisted in the air we did quickly determine that the brake caliper was excessive in movement when not applying brakes. Now in most occasions as per the design of the brake caliper their will be some slight movement, but in this case, too much and subsequently the noise source.
Anytime we determine the source of a fault we will research information regarding technical service bulletins (T.S.B) as well as any potential open recall information. This allows us to ensure that we are not missing any updated designs to fix or more importantly make sure the repair is not a current RECALL candidate. It is important that you do the same before diving in to repairs.
There are many websites claiming Recall information ,however go right to the regulated source ,as there will be less ambiguity.

There is a Recall regarding brakes for a brake booster concern, but not a brake caliper noise concern.

You my hero i replaced the cv axle and checked all suspension didn't fixed until saw your video. @@Desertcarcare I have a 2010 Dodge Challenger I bought the car used and knew if would have a few issues, but the; motor, tranny, and suspension was strong. I do have a parasitic battery drain, that drains my battery every 1-3 days? The car coded out for a cooling/heating fan relay. That hasn't been put on yet do to the mechanic not being able to find out where it goes. Second it coded out for a bad alternator that happened about a week after I bought it. Replaced it and also had the front and back brakes done. That being said after the brake job, now my car feels like there is something loose in the front right drivers side? When you tap the brakes it feels like the calipers are loose. Before the brake job the car drove imaculatly. I can't win for lose. It also has a leaking powerstering unit. And....

I believe this has to be the problem with my car and soon as I look up brake caliber noise a Dodge Dart pops up wow isn’t that something. I had my Dodge Dart serviced the struts and sway bar links replaced thought the noise was coming from the strut mount or spring but I don’t hear the noise when I apply pressure to the brake pedal. So this definitely have to be the issue in my 2015 Dodge Dart

Naimul Hasan I took his advice and replaced the Autozone brake pads with OEM and the noise 100% went away. It was the pads all along. The little metal clips that come with the pads was the key to the issue. The OEM pads come with metal clips that have a spring tensioner in them that separate the brakes from the rotors while the autozone brakes didn’t. So when I let off on the bakes, the AZ brakes kept making contact with the rotor causing chattering while the OEM pads no longer made contact. Those little metals clips believe it or not are so important. Let me know how you make out.

In case you haven't found an answer yet: yes! Caliper guide pins can be bought separate from a full assembly. They typically come as a set of 2 guide pins and 2 bolts to completely replace the old ones on a single caliper. These usually DO NOT come with the rubber boots that go on the pins, and are also sold separately.

Had my calipers replaced many times from the dealership. The shop foreman finally came for a ride a long and told me flat out that they can continue to fix it but no matter what it's going to continue to come back. Had my dart since 2015. Its now 2021 and it's still an issue, with no recall

Nice man. I have an awful squeal that I took into Meineke a while ago I mean like more than a year ago. I had them check it out and they just wanted to charge me $700 to fix it all. I just had the bare minimum done. This incident made me get into car repair myself. Anyways.... the squeal is still there and it MOST definitely seems to be on the driver side but I have investigated both driver side brakes.. drum and disc.. and see nothing wrong. I am just driving on the squeal. If I find the problem ill make a video on it.

I have this same problem on my Chrysler 300. I swapped the caliper for a new one I got at Autozone and its still got play in the caliper. Maybe it was just faulty, I guess I should warranty it out and see what happens. Awesome video man.

I have the same problem but the dealer insisting to change strut and associated accessories. Showed TSB but still not ready to check caliper as you did. Took it to another place they could not find any fault with struts. The problem still not solved.

Hey Frank and guys i just installed new calipers and pads on my miata. I know we definitely over tightened the caliper bolt on the passenger side. And the hardware/shims sent with the pads resemble the oem but the center/triangular portion of all the shims seem to be rubbing the rotors. There is an unbearable noise now. I would like to know what you guys and dudetts may think. My hearing is fried due to many years in navy flight decks so tracking sources of sound is challenging

@@Desertcarcare no problem. The noise has mostly left. I'll bend the excess material of the shims back so they don't rub then get new rotors so it will all be new [calipers, pads, rotors, lines, hardware] then bleed several times. And I'll loosen the the caliper bracket

FIRST- Thanks for taking time to post your videos! So much help for people trying to diagnose. Similar issue for me on our 2012 Chrysler T&C. Doing a brake job... took caliper pins out to regrease and noticed 2 different styles being used: 1 standard pin, and 1 pin with a suspension bushing (not the caliper boots). The pin with the bushing is seized up on 3 of 4 of the wheels. Looks like no grease ever from the factory. The standard pins still had grease and move freely. Can you explain these pins with bushings... why they exist, how to lube them properly and should they slide freely likw the ones with no bushings? So Before finding this video, I came to the conclusion my 09’ charger front caliper slide pins/brackets were wallered out and was the culprit for the rattle noise.. New OEM caliper brackets are discontinued.. so now what. Roll the dice on reman brackets and new OEM pins?

Uggh -parts no longer made makes it challenging - we like your idea there -pay particular attention to the original caliper mount bracket to ensure all is well there -unfortunately no other solution that we know of at this time -good luck !

Hello! Sorry for bothering you. I have a similar play on my rear axle caliper on a Mitsubishi Lancer. I replaced the caliper sliding pins but the noise is still there. Caliper brakets can be repaired? I can't seem to find any after market ones as the original costs a fortune, I replaced both sides a year ago and the noise returned. I don't want to spend again 2 hundred dollars on a single bracket....I tend to think the quality is really poor... What should I do? The car is 3 year old, it's practically new....

I've replaced the whole front end on my cadillac, and i still get this violent gas pedal shake when I hit bumps. Also I hear like a metal whirling sound when driving, and my steering wheel shakes at highway speeds even after alignment and balance. Also the more I drive the worse it seems to get epically when it's hot outside, and it is some type of fluid or water that comes from the bottom of it after driving it. Could this be the brake calipers are seized? I have replaced everything on the front end, I did buy the car used also.

Great vid. I'm hoping you can help out. I have a 2016 1500 sport model with the 8spd/hemi. I am hearing a rattle from the passenger side rear, possible the exhaust, but not 100% sure. It happens mostly on cold starts and the rattle used to go away somewhat as I drove and the truck warmed up. Now I hear it consistenly, especially over bumps. I haven't had this truck long, and started noticing this rattle as the weather got colder. What could this be? So, I regretfully overtightened one of my guide pins for a new caliper install and snapped the bolt in the process. I have purchased replacement pins for the caliper however, in my mind I'm thinking I can just swap out the pin boot from the one that I damaged instead of purchasing a whole new set of boots. Yes or no? If yes, then why if the boot is brand new anyway.

I'm having this exact problem, thank you so much! After three misdiagnoses and tons of research I found your video. The front brakes rattle over bumps but the slightest braking pressure causes the to be quiet. Now just to get it fixed, would replacing the calipers entirely fix this? My 2010 1.8L Vibe/Matrix rears are doing the same thing. I bought aftermarket slide pins Dorman HW14470 everything is bolted down but the caliper still moves. Are both guide pins suppose to have the rubber o-ring bushing at the tip or just one of them? The originals were pretty corroded so I tossed them and can't remember which has a bushing and/or which goes on upper/lower on the bracket?

Just put a brand new pads on my front tires I have a Volvo S60 2001 and it has a 175000 miles on it the brake pads were smoking on both sides I’m almost positive that the caliper is sticking

ethan brewer ~ could be calipers | need to ensure hydraulically that when you depressed the pistons in the calipers ~ there wasn’t any debris back up in to the brake master ~ bleed the brakes really well with new fluid ~Additionally ensure caliper mount and operation is moving freely . My Car Recently Started Making A Grinding Noise Everytime I Would Drive, I Changed The Brake Pads The Rotors And It Kinda Stoped, Now I Only Hear Thr Grinding Noise Sometimes, Especially If I Go Over A Pot Whole, Also If I Have My Car Parked For A While And I Push It With My Hands Back And Fourth You Can Hear The noise, So Idk If It Can Be The Caliper Or Wheel Bearing?

i have a 2013 dodge dart (same color as that one lol) but the back right wheel bearing is bad, it makes a lot of noise around 60, i need to replace it but im not 100% sure how. i brought it back to the dealership and they where gonna charge me $250 to fix it. i looked up the part online and its only $80, so i was gonna attempt to do it my self. any tips you could give me to help make this a bit easier on me?

Just found out the noise from my truck was because one of my break callibers was missing a bolt

Tunic Slayer I'm having the same noise and issue I looked and I'm able to rock my caliper back n forth. Was ur brakes also squeaking or making a noise because it was loose ? I just changed my pads and I was missing a caliper bolt and they screech and rattle really loud

@@chrisortega8813 so I was able to rock the top part of my calliper because there was a bolt missing all I had to do was out the bolt back and it fixed the problem

Tunic Slayer was ur causing the pads to screech and make noises at all too or just the rattling ? Bc I just put new pads and I hear the rattling and screatch and some light grinding and I'm wondering if the missing bolt is causing that and the rattling

Yea..it was a odd correlation..but I’m highly convinced I have a bad caliper due to how hot one of my brake discs get..you can drive it around the block and the brake disc is untouchable compared to the other rotors
