They kind of did a while ago, not 100% automatic but you can do it a lot easier than this by using RetopFlow blender plugin, buy it of cgcookie or get the source code for free off github if you're broke

Very nice video, where do you get the time?! ;) Great sculpture and also the lighting of the render at the end looks very good, very realistic and a pleasure to watch. For re-topology I can imagine this will become easier in the future. Where you only select different outlines and shapes. For instance; draw a line (with crease pencil?) over the eyelids and encircle the outer edges of the eye socket could automate retopology for that part (with adjustable parameters). In that way you don't have to draw every polygon by hand again. Does that sound plausibele? UPDATE: I just learned it already exists and is called bSurfaces, is there a reason you did not use it? Oh, how do you think that sculpting in zbrush and blender do compare? Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work!

Thank you very much Sebastian for your comment. The truth is that I do not know where I take the time but I like it. They were 3 hours of retopo and the video editing even more. Hahaha. I wanted to show the tools and the classic process of retopology and the tools that I use, in the tutorial of my web I explain something else. I also want to make a video of "Retopology with Bsurface" to compare the two methods. Spoiler: I'm sure Bsurface wins! The video will be in real time and will last 5 minutes. Hahaha I've used Zbrush a long time but Blender can do everything I want and I do not need to jump from one program to another. Both are great softwares, it's a personal preference because I find it more comfortable ;-)

You are literally discribing b-surfaces. That's a great grease pencil based retopo ad-on. Not just retopo either, b-surfaces are great.

nice video. I have one doubt. At last you do a simple rig to move the head. Is it possible to use detailed rig along with multi resolution modifier? Because i lose the details when use subdivision surface modifier which should be used along with rig. Need help.:-(

I do not know if that's what you ask me. With the F key and with the F2 add-on activated in the preferences section, you create faces automatically when you have a vertex selected.

Does Blender itself (or any addon) have an AUTOretopology tool? I can't say this looks any stronger than 3DCoat or ZBrush tools for just plain ol' retopoloigize manually...

Why even bother with all that when at the beginning of the video the whole head looked finished?

Because the sculpting process creates the mesh in any way it wants to, whether that be tris, quads or ngons. It looks great but the end result is a really bad mesh. Retopology leaves you with a mesh comprised of all quads, which is a much 'cleaner' way of working. It's not 'bother', it's just what you do if you want to do things properly. It may not be for everyone but personally I enjoy retopology and do not consider it a chore or a problem.

@@DJ-cm8xj well it can cause shader bugs and artifacts when subdividing and if you're going to animate you need a mesh made of quads to not cause distortion or shading issues
