A small tip for those watching this and having issues with mirror modifier. When you add the bSurfaces object, make sure you go back to object mode - press Ctrl + A, and apply all transforms. This will apply current transformations and set the bSurfaces object's position, scale, and rotation to default values 0, 1, 0 respectively. I had this issue today. I added the mirror modifiers, but it was not mirroring on my model.

I also set the Mirror Object to the model you're toping over and it's fixed like that.

As someone who's recently learned and completed a full body retopology of one of my characters, this tutorial is one I wish I had earlier. The tips you shared using your cards was especially helpful, and I used them to clean up certain trouble areas of my character's mesh. Ty Aram 👍👍

Thank you thank you thank you! I can’t thank you enough. This tutorial helped me actually ENJOY doing topology! I’m so happy and excited that I can make my models cleaner now and not feel so overwhelmed. Seriously thank you so much! If possible, would you be able to make a video about the rest of the body? Having those starting loops really helped me so I was wondering if you could make a similar video but for the body. Or even just an image showing those important starting loops.

if you want to smooth the mesh faster, select all border edge loops, invert selection and smooth everything at once. duplicate shrinkwrap modifier, apply it, re-smooth as much as needed. most important is to reapply the shrinkwrap everytime to nail the vertices at their smoothed location on the surface of the sculpt, or they will float anywhere in no time.
@tegnemaskin2 жыл бұрын
yeah those vertices floating made me crazy. thanks for this tip!

On the "inescapable triangle... Frequently, even where a triangle is unavoidable, you CAN still choose the "best" place to put it, and with a little fiddling, transport it by merging vertices along edges... Go back to smooth where you've effectively eliminated a series of quads, throwing everything else "out of whack"... again... AND carry on forward... It's also worth saying that a lot of the basic numbers given in some tutorials (not all, BUT some) are rather arbitrary in nature. They'll work, but if you listen for an even or odd number (say, "Start with a cylinder and add about 5 loop segments" ) then you can tell whether another number can work, usually even for even and odd for odd (so in our example, 3 5 7 or even 9 sections would function acceptably)... AND this is useful if you're starting with (for instance) a female human figure tutorial, because you want to design a creature with 2 or 3 sets of wings on her back. Topology should be planned out ahead of time, and this "judgment call" will help you get ahead of the curve instead of behind the 8-ball... so to speak. Finally, just remember... "The master is NOT the one who never makes mistakes. He is the one who recovers from them with seasoned ease and doesn't get stuck." ;o)

Great tutorial! The "cards" were an excellent way to explanation those topology manipulations. I had known about most but a couple were new to me, so this was awesome to learn. Also instead of the sculpt smooth tool, the slide relax sometimes works better for "smoothing" geometry as it doesn't affect the total volume of the mesh

Amazing!, It is a wonderful tutorial, you explain everything we need to create retopology in a simple and practical way, with this knowledge we lose the fear to do this process that is important for 3d models. There is a function in Blender "Grid fill" that adds the quads needed to fill the mesh, so the process is faster. (but to fill from loop to loop they must have the same number of vertices) you can find it inside the Edit mode -> the top menu "Face". Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I've seen a lot of retopo tutorials but never gotten a handle on how many edges to add in each essential loop which is why I'm always unsure of how to do so myself. I try but when the time comes to merge the loops together into one mesh it's always mismatched and the model looks ugly. Is there a secret set of numbers that you could tell me about the number of faces per loop (eg. how many faces should be in the eye loop, mouth loop, the loop around the ear)? Knowing how many faces per loop I should have will help me in making a complete mesh.

it usually depends on the character! try to make the retopology as low-poly as possible! there are a few parts like around the eyes which should have more details so they can have more amount of faces compared to the other parts! but pls don't confuse yourself with the number! just watch this video and learn where to start and how to plan retopology! then you're always good to go👍
@Electorch2 жыл бұрын
The only thing you should keep in mind for the loops is that you need equal amount of face for each upper and lower part of the loops. You need an even number of faces (no odd).
