The M48 was the first American battle tank designed & built entirely after the end of World War 2. As such it incorporated lessons learned in Europe and in Korea where United Nations forces encountered Soviet Armor for the first time. This very thorough documentary covers all elements of development from initial needs assessment, design, testing systems & prototypes through introduction & training. Highlights include an inside view of the Detroit Ordnance R&D Center where 10 of thousands of parts were developed, failure & performance tested including engines, armaments, metallurgy, cold weather performance, lubricants, field testing & much more.

As far as I can tell, the reason us Canadians were present at the joint board was so we can present some requirements for the tank as at the time we likely would buy the new tank to outfit our armoured forces and so rather than sit on the sidelines and risk getting a tank that doesn’t quite fit our needs, we take part in the drawing up of tank requirements so when the tank comes out we know that we get what we wanted as settled during the drawing phase of tank design.

But You country didnt buy the M-48, Canada had Centurions (various Marks) replaced later by german Leopard I and today Leopard II. Germany recieved M-48 and later upgunned some M-48`s with the Royal Ordonance L-7 105mm gun, the gun was license built in Germany and was the same used in Centurions and Leopard I

That was an interesting video. I wondered about this tank model since it didn't get much battle experience under US forces. And, I've been curious about Tank Command out on Warren Rd. for ages! I've driven by there quite a few number of times and always wondered what went on there. This video answered that general question. Cool

My Dad did consulting engineering on the M-48 at the Army Tank Automotive Command (ATAC) Centerline facility at Warren, Michigan in the 1950's. My Dad was a Chemical Engineering Ph.D student at the University of Michigan then, but his Undergraduate & Masters Degrees were in Mechanical Engineering. The project he researched was improving the stereoscopic range finder's durability against misalignment caused by impact shock loads created by light artillery shells. I don't know the details of the project, but I believe Dad was successful with the project. Dad told me (years ago) that the M-48's rangefinder main gun sight was very accurate (when working properly), & said during a firing test for proving the rangefinder sight's accuracy, the top of a tree (located some long distance from the tank) was sighted, & after the gun fired, the top of the tree was removed, leaving the remaining trunk standing, as intended. I am an Undergraduate Mechanical Engineer myself, & graduated from the University of Arkansas College of Mechanical Engineering, where my Dad was a Professor for over 30 years.

@@daffyduck7336 It was reclassified later on. The T-54/T-55 series were classified as medium tanks, but later were classified as main battle tanks. I'm not saying your wrong, I'm saying it's what they've been reclassified as now. Kinda like how the M26 Pershing was originally designated as a heavy tank but got redesignated as a medium tank. Pretty cool that you got to work with M47 and M48 tanks, BTW!

Well you re not too far wrong. The Americans didnt really get tank design down till the Abrams tank. Which is getting a bit dated now. Ut in its prime was certainly ly an effective tank.

Ishermans could knock out T62's in 1973, bud. What's your point? That doesn't mean that the M48 wasn't a better all around tank than the Sherman.

Patton 48s were already outdated by 65 as they were being replaced by M60s with 105mm main guns. Also it doesn't matter how good a tank is, if the crews are poorly trained or led they're gonna get their asses handed to them by professionals which is what the Indian Army was in 65. Their Shermans also had Centurions upgunned with 105mm complementing them which was the most lethal tank cannon available to western armies at the time.
