Just because something is free, doesn't mean you can use it for whatever you like! This video gives advice for making sure you have the rights to use the images, icons and fonts you find online in your work. Please remember to subscribe bit.ly/1aE5UOT
You've probably seen terms like 'public domain' and 'creative commons' around the internet before. This video explains how copyright works for assets you may want to use in your design projects, and tells you how to figure out if you have the rights to use an asset you've found. I hope you find it useful! If you have any questions or if there's anything I explained too quickly/not well enough, please feel free to ask in the comments below.

Thank you so much for the information! I'm going to be making an online portfolio and I have some projects I'd done for classes that I'm going to include. @charlimarieTV
@charlimarieTV 4 жыл бұрын
will you be doing freelance work? or will your portfolio be used to get a full time job. it's safest to use a font you have a commercial license for, but if it's a personal site and you won't be using it to get clients i suppose it could technically just need a personal license. I'm not a lawyer or a copyright expert though!

I absolutely love all your videos especially since I've hit a plateau in my journey with design. You are so inspiring. I wanted to know with selling t shirts that your printed on, if that would be illegal since you are selling t-shirts that other companies made. For example) if i buy white t-shirts from american eagle and then sell them on my own site, can i get sued? Also, in order to make a shirt where I can put my own tag on it, do i have to make my own t-shirt because it seems wrong to (for example) cut off american eagles tag and put my own after i screen print the design. Please let me know. So two part question, is it illegal to sell shirts you bought from other companies with your own designs on it? And, what does it take to be able to put your own tag on a shirt, is it illegal to put it on another brand's shirt? XOXOXO Thank you
@charlimarieTV

rather than using american eagle i suggest using a blank tshirt brand. these brands are designed specifically to be sold to people who will print their own designs on them and put their own tags on!

What you said to me was "rather than using american eagle i suggest using a blank tshirt brand. these brands are designed specifically to be sold to people who will print their own designs on them and put their own tags on!" My question that was, "Can you give me an example of a brand like that, that i can use, or a couple brands? Hi! I suggest googling 'wholesale blank tshirts' or 'blank tshirts to print on' and you'll see a bunch of different brands. Some examples you'll likely see are Gildan, American Apparel, Fruit of the Loom etc, but different brands will be available depending on where in the world you live! I hope that helps :)

When you sell a client a logo you designed, what files do you give them? Do you give them the AI file with all the layers to your work, or do you give them a compressed file?
@charlimarieTV

+Luis Montoya good question! It depends on what you've agreed, but generally a client will need a vector version of their logo. So you give them an eps. Which is editable, yes.

Hi, this is the first video I've seen on your channel and instantly subscribed. Hope you see this and are able to help give me some advise. I am not entirely sure if this will be down your lane though. I am currently now having some doubts about trying to copyright or patent my friend and I furniture designs. The further I read into it the more doubts about it being useful arise. We don't have massive amounts of cash and connections to the best manufactures nor the ability to get them into stores at snap of a finger. We are highly confident that our work will be loved and ultimately run across "that someone" that will steal it before we are able to make all our moves. Design them, get them built by professionals, get them into our favorite blogs/magazine and stores kind of moves. So, there is one design we are most protective about that is our main concern. We see it as our baby, we see it as turning into an iconic piece and we see it as being the face of our company. It is a coffee table or even a place to throw laundry on as far as function goes. The shape of it is what's special to us. The piece was built off our love for fashion and we did draw some inspiration from Japanese culture when we visited. What steps can we take to make sure this table design is not stolen and presented as someone else's? Would a patent along with copyright really help at all? The table will be a solid color and really has no special functions

i will paint apples in all style, and just daily objects, anime them all and then just go after people , it dose not work that way. It is usually a tactic , just because you can sue dose not mean you will win period. Zara and many bigger company copies the exact same thing and nothing happens. I always wonder what about the tree illustration I did when i was 6 year old? so many people draw the same thing LOL

Very interesting video !!! But i still have question regarding the parameters of copyright and patent process. I am a leather jacket manufacturer and have my own jacket factory but i am really confused regarding the jacket styles. For example my biker leather jacket design looks same as 100s of other biker jackets from different companies. So my question is: Can a generic deisgn be patented of copyrighted. For example evry t-shirt in the world has a round neck deisgn, so can a company go and get a patent for round neck design to stop other companies to manufacture round neck t-shirts? Please note im not taking about the brand name or any specific pattern or deisgn on the t-shirt but i am taking about the basic design in clothing. I get inspiration from a lot of online leather jackets and i want to make the same designs in my factory but obviously without the pattern or label of the company from whose website i am getting the design ideas. Thank you in advance

I just only want to know I only use certain fonts just as title and credits on my video so I am just wondering if it I will be in trouble for just only using it like a few seconds and using the style in a thumbnail
@charlimarieTV
@charlimarieTV 7 жыл бұрын
+Zen Advent oh right! Yep you must have the rights to use those fonts. So you can use only fonts that you've purchased a license for, or that come with a free license. If you're not sure, Google the font name and find the designer who made it. Sometimes people will make fonts available to download for free illegally. So just because you got it free doesn't mean you can use it. You must read the license. Hope that makes sense!

If you own the rights to your own channel branding then you can do whatever you like with it. If you’re talking about using the KZbin logo, consult KZbin’s brand guidelines for info on how you’re allowed to use it.

I have a question. Let's just says, I saw this designer on youtube designing a movie poster example ( marvel ) but this designer use the photo of one of the character from the marvel and create an entire movie poster. Does it mean this designer commit copyright infrigment? I don't know anything about copyright and legal stuff so I am a little scared of copyright infrigment.
@charlimarieTV
@charlimarieTV 2 жыл бұрын
Yep! Unless you have licensed the photo you are reaching copyright. You’re also using a character someone else created, so that’s their intellectual property, people breach copyright like this a lot. But that doesn’t make it legal.

Did you pay for a commercial licence to the font? You’ll need it if you’re going to use it for a logo for a business. And check the license allows for that tweaking (most do!)
