Such good advice on trying things and not matching. Some design "rules" just mean you have to buy all beige decor. 😅 Edit: I recently watched Hazriel make her office VERY pink. It was definitely not what I would want but it clearly made her happy. I hope as you continue to decorate your home you lean into the aesthetic that makes you happy.

Oh! Wax candles that are battery operated! So cool. I’ve learned over the years that candles aren’t safe in an old wooden Victorian apt. 😢 I have a huge heart shaped one I put on my toilet when I’m having a spa day bath…. So it gets lit made 2-3 times a year cause I forget….

I'm old and have a LOT of 'knickknacks" as we used to call them, so I change them out fairly often. It's fun to match that orange vase with the orangish candle and put it in front of the wall hanging it matches, or to make a display of the frogs my granddaughter sewed out of felt with a rock she gave us. So yeah, those things are NEVER permanent, every time I dust, something will change. Your room now looks as though it's evolved over time - not like you're trying to sell cheap furniture. What I mean is that it looks real - as though you have lived in the house that maybe was a family home and those could be Grandpa's books or his mother's vases. It's fun to mix things that weren't made in a factory in this century.

The fabric over the record cabinet looks great. Personally I loathe fixing water damage like that (more time consuming than French polishing in my experience) so covering it up is great especially with such a good colour match I love watching you arranging and rearranging the decor. My husband doesn't understand this AT ALL. The number of times he's considerately unwrapped an ornament and stowed it somewhere random! A few years ago I got an antique(?) rug for my sewing room and maybe 6 months after while at the thrift store I kept coming back to a small wall cabinet with a chicken feed bag front and painted wood. I didn’t know why I kept going and looking at it but just trusted my instincts and brought it home… it’s the exact color pallet of the rug with very desaturated red/pink blue and beige. Still need to make room on the wall for it but it’s just chilling on the floor for now. Eventually going to repaint the walls to just embrace the colors of the rugs/cabinet even though I’m not a fan of pink (as I look at the antique pink couch also in that room that I got from the thrift stores dumpster for free).

Shannon! I love, love, love!!!! the finished room! Thank you so much for sharing your creative process with us. I'm sure there's someone trained in home design that could tell us WHY everything you chose works, but honestly, I don't care. Maybe I love this so much because this is the way I go about "dressing" a room as well: assembling what I already have and thrifting what I need. You could call it more of an intuitive decorating process. Using various wood tones implies a collection made over time, which is perfect for a century old home and blending old and newer pieces is emotionally grounding to me. When you laid down the carpet in that room and added the record cabinet, I actually FELT the room come into focus! Thank you for sharing your quandaries and final decisions. Do you know what was so wonderful about this video for me? As someone who wants to create her own esthetic spaces in my 1st house, I have struggled with the feeling that "some people are just really talented decorators" and they can instantly create beautiful spaces. Seeing you do what I need to do: fuss with everything and move it all a bunch of times to find the right "feel" made me feel so relieved with what I saw as my struggles to decorate well. This was so uplifting! ❤

omg, most excellent, that was EXACTLY the phenomenon I wanted to tackle/combat/break down in this video! I have PLENTY of examples of things I've tried that I ultimately didn't love, but they were fun to try, and I learned from it - both in terms of talent/what things generally look good together, but also what I PERSONALLY tend to prefer in terms of asesthetics. It is NEVER a one-and-done thing, it's always a process, but that entire process virtually never makes it onto social media for a whole host of reasons.... SO GO FORTH AND DECORATE! Don't be afraid to make mistakes - you will learn from them, and as long as you haven't dropped a ton of money on it, you can always tweak, learn, improve, discover your own aesthetic... it's just a process, and one that should hopefully be fun and ongoing!

I like what you said. We’re gonna live with it for now. I took a room to create a sewing room and use leftover paint, a set of curtains I got for$1, used furniture I painted, and some plastic folding tables. Do I like them? Nope, but they will work f or now.I also brought up a milk glass cake stand and several other things, including an antique book given to my grandfather in the year 1878. It had to be mended due to a 10 month old rescue dog who ate the cover off. Evil beast. Over all I like the room and am pleased I bought very little.

Love the final product! How much fun to hunt through your place to find decor items 🙂🙂 I know you don't want to hang anything from the plaster yet, but a little tip for the future; pins and needles. If you put them in at a 40-30 degree angle you can use them to hang pictures. My mom had a 2.5' x 3.5' antique mirror with a heavy ornate frame hanging from a needle for 20 years. Its great because the hole is so small it never needs patching

It's very interesting to follow your thought process. This is how I've decorated my home since early childhood. Trial and errors and moving around things. To hide the grommets on the curtain use a flower or greenery swag from one side to the other. You can even use a brass curtain rod end and put it on standing out from the grommet openings and then put the swag. Love that room for an office. Also love this adventure!

You're so right about remembering that things can be rearranged anytime, I forget that sometimes and get hung up on getting things right first go, when really it's better if I try arrangements out and see what they are like to live and interact with. Also you've just reminded me that I have bulb vases collecting dust, I'm going to see if I can get the prepped bulbs this weekend so I can have flowers in January I think I've probably missed Christmas flowering -nevermind flowers is flowers. Thank you for showing what making decor decisions is really like, it's handy to be reminded sometimes.

This video gave me a lightbulb moment about a way I could incorporate my late mom’s memory into a very niche section of decor in my house. Two walls of my bedroom are jokingly named the “rich white people” walls. It started when my Nana gave me a beautifully framed print of Le Déjeuner des canotiers, and with my mom’s help I’ve thrifted or been given a bunch of other pieces of art of rich white people. When I saw that same painting in your book that you were looking through, it reminded me of a book of art my mom gave me shortly before she died. It was a book of art and poems all about a mother’s love for her daughter. What better way to add on to my favorite wall of art than with a piece or two from the book that was quite literally filled with love ❤

Love your vids, and decorating with what you find and on a budget. You could flatten the tapestry pillowcase and use it in a frame as wall art. Also maybe take some cream cleanser or a magic eraser to the paint on the door. I’m noticing some dirty areas on it & I think brightening it up real quick would make a difference. You are doing a wonderful job! And yes I also love the artsy doggy mirror shots ❤
