Giving my bedroom - the room in my cottage in by far the worst condition - a temporary makeover, on a budget.

MY STORY:
I've been stuck in rut for the past couple of years - both my parents passed away at the end of 2022 and since then I've been navigating grief, burnout and just being scared to make a change. I decided that 2024 was going to be the year I set my life on fire, because life is too short to spend all of it wondering just what the point is. So I quit my job, sold my house in the suburbs and bought a 150yr old cottage in the middle of the Scottish countryside. Follow along as I attempt to renovate this little stone house, build a backyard homestead and hopefully fall in love with life, all over again.
Spoiler alert - I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, so almost anything could happen.

I’m all for painting and making things as nice and comfortable as possible until better options are available. Yes, the bedroom that I lived in in a tenement in Glasgow had a horrible mysterious stain on the carpet and I did just throw a rug over it and “forgot” about it! 😂

Why they waited until the only month of the year the brambles are actually any use, I have no idea! I was so annoyed!! 😂🙈

“Color drenching” is one of the moodiest things I’ve seen in a long time. It’s where the ceiling, walls and all borders are the same color. That would be warm and inviting as well. ❤

Yes!!! I like colour drenching whenever I’ve seen it done! I might have gone for it - but I couldn’t face painting the ceiling again (I painted it white the day I got the keys and it was such a pain!)

It's completely valid to do a room refresh, even if it's minimal and temporary. Nothing makes a difference like a fresh coat of paint and a few well placed pictures, decor, etc. Your bedroom looks so much cozier now and reflects your personality much better. I love the color. What a cozy feel. Might I suggest.. paint the areas of the plywood floor that are exposed around sides of rug brown or even dark brownish red. That will give room a more clean finished look. No need to do whole floor , since you'll be redoing it all to a kitchen later. Much love,from a Nana in NC , USA

Nice job in the bedroom and good choice not disturbing the lead paint. It takes years to get things to where you really want them but I was glad to get past the days of a ceiling falling down in the middle of the night, one was on the bed in the spare room. We got to the point of only mowing paths where we walk the most. Less work and good for all the small creatures in the grass.

Jude my home is over 100 years old with lath and plaster and at first I tried using adhesive Command picture hangers but they wouldn’t stick to the plaster due to temperature differences unless I put an entire package on them. What I found were 3/4” brass nails that only penetrate the plaster and are very sturdy. I have an antique oval mirror hanging on one nail and it’s been there for 4 years now. I get them at an actual hardware store that has bulk bins. Everything I have hanging is on one.

Oooh thank you, I’ll try it out! Lots of people suggested command hooks but their website says they’re not good for wallpaper - and I thought the textured woodchip wallpaper might be a challenge for them! (And I didn’t want the mirror crashing down - I could do without 7yrs of bad luck!)

Tea Tree Oil is anti-microbial and great to add to cleaning mixtures in a bucket or a bottle to kill mold and mildew. I used to work in janitorial and we used it when certain areas were hidden from us for awhile. Hope the room feels better for you. Sleeping in a comfy space makes a big difference.

When I moved into my apartment I decided that instead of making nail holes for hanging (except where absolutely necessary) I would use 3M command strips to hang pictures and things. What I love is that if I decide I want to move something, it’s quick, easy, and no residual holes. Happy home-making!

I live in a slumlord type place, but have to stay due to cost. I cleaned up the bathroom, kitchen sink and fridge and washed the walls near my bed in case I roll near them. I do not use the bathroom sink at all, just use the kitchen. I did not put any of my stuff in cupboards, so got shelves. But I did make everything look good and I do think it is really important. That’s probably because it is very similar to the colour that I painted both my bedroom and sitting room in my little house a couple of years ago, much to the disgust of my off-white loving family… both rooms face north and are filled with knitted, crocheted and quilted things - they are my ‘autumn/winter’ spaces and make very happy!

My dear young person, I am going to encourage you to learn to use a 2” angled sash brush for cutting in and trim painting. I think a short term spruce up is exactly what you need here, I couldn't live like that either. Your approach seems very practical and sensible . Well done on your lawnmower prep my husband services and repairs lawnmowers and chain saws, he also fixes bigger farm and ground care machinery. He was at our local Dairy this weekend fixing their bale shredder. Wise not to let it meadow till your ready, it is beautiful but hard work. Love the cat pics. Yep, we did several landlord specials when we moved into this house, only one room left to de-woodchip! You’ll get there and in the meantime your room looks way more cosy. Keep smiling Jude! 😊
