• Transforming A Retro H... -~-
This is the first video of a 4-part series and it covers the following topics:
0:00 - Design Influence
1:31 - The Legs
3:04 - Leg Tapers
4:44 - Leg Miters
6:53 - Design Change?
8:17 - Apron and Drawer Parts
10:27 - Bevel Cuts
12:47 - Domino Joinery
Nicole needed a new desk and her only requests were a large top, a shelf, and a drawer. Beyond that, I had complete creative freedom. When I set pencil to paper, I came up with a design that definitely shows some Mid-Century Modern influence, but is largely influenced by Star Trek. This wasn't an intentional influence so much as something I realized after the design was complete. I've been binge-watching old episodes for the last year and the Roddenberry design aesthetic has apparently seeped into my brain.
The theme of this project is developed around the 56 degree angle of the legs. You'll find that angle carried through to the apron and the drawer. This presented a number of challenges that were fun to tackle.

Thanks Marc, I enjoy your teaching style and the inside-your-head view of the design process. Not sure this particular style works for me, but the process ... ah, the process of making things align, and using the completed parts as templates ... is just wonderful. I'm intrigued by how others clamp, secure, or otherwise fixture the parts they are working with, and the tapering jig really caught my eye. I'll be looking for that one. Regards, R

I appreciate the construction with the domino. I look at it like a pellet smoker. It is great to cook with charcoal or wood but if you are time constrained, a pellet smoker lets you focus on creating the flavors of the food without having to worry about the time consuming aspects of tending a fire. Nicole needed a desk. You have tons of projects to do. Domino lets you deliver the project faster and be freer to experiment with the design than you might be willing to do if you had to do the joinery by hand. We get to follow along and enjoy the tasty desk!

After 10+ years of watching your channel, I actually have a suggestion. When laying out long tapered parts like the legs, I nest them (big ends facing opposite directions). Then you only have one rip cut, and one taper cut for two parts. Love your work man, you've been a constant source for info and inspiration.

Awesome design. As a trek fan i can see where the design came from. I think nowadays using the domino isnt a tabboo anymore. Like you said in wood talk, peoples phones cost more than a domino and a phone gets replaced quite more often compared to a domino. One major flaw i noticed in the video: the enterprise you used in your captains log, was the wrong one! But I'll let this one slip cause the next generation is the best star trek out there 😊 and your videos are great. And you are the fresh breeze that woodworking needs in my opinion. Thats all...

I still love the comparison that most people walk around with a phone in their pocket that costs more than a domino and has a small fraction of the expected lifespan. I have a domino and will only spend $250 on a phone, just comes down to justification. I wish people would keep their frugal opinions to them selves. It's nice to see new techniques to use this tool. I think it's more versatile than people give it credit for. But most people will never know because everyone gets flamed for using it on youtube.

Hi Mark, This is fantastic content on the free site and great timing as I’ve just started a desk build for my daughter starting her first year of college and staying at home for online schooling. I really like some of the details you’ve incorporated and the tips on the domino as I just got one this summer and this is my first project with it. My original design included a stretcher across the back legs. My question is when might you need such a stretcher for strength? Or is it more of a design feature? I noticed you did not include a stretcher in your design. As always, appreciate your feedback. Fred

Star Trek, in particular, the next generation has a lot of inspiring furniture and designs, I do recall a beautiful wall mount shelf in Enterprise season 1 Ep 8 Civilization in the lady's Dr lab. I would love to see an interview with the set designers to know where and who made the furniture. It would be fun to hear which piece caught all of your eyes, I am sure many many of us Woodworker/Trekkies that have an interest and passion for designing, Mark and myself are surely not the only two. Perhaps we can compile a list or something.

It looks mid century modern because everything about Star Trek was totally mid century modern. The furniture, colors, decor, women's hair, costumes,...everything. 2001 Space Odyssey had a lot of it too, though not nearly so much. Similarly, Star Wars New Hope looks totally 70s. Funny how in their effort to be futuristic all they really did was reflect their present. I wonder what our vision of the future now, will look like in 50 plus years. Probably still MCM since it doesn't seem to be going away. Either way, still a great piece. Looking forward to watching the series.

Looking good but I have 2 questions. Could you cut the leg blanks wider and when you taper them, you have 2 legs with less waste? Also, when you cut the bevels, could you move the rip fence to the other side of the blade so the point of the previously cut bevel could ride higher on the fence? I also have no problem with the domino. I just wish I had one. Take care. Bill

@ricos1497
@ricos1497 3 жыл бұрын
Sjobergs if price isn't an issue. They're not expensive for what you get of course. I bought a cheap bench a decade ago, and it's still standing, but has a lot wrong with it. The top was okay on it, and the vice not too bad, bit it just lacked weight. I'm building a modular bench instead (plans from paoson woodworking in KZbin) so it includes storage and so on. Like you, I don't have a huge amount of time so paid more to have plywood delivered already cut. The design just really suited my needs, whereas my bought bench didn't. Basically, make sure you know what you need first, in terms of storage and whether you'll be planing (height/weight) most, or machine work.

Nice work (as usual). I have an kinda unrelated question though. I notice you and many others will joint one face and one edge,THEN, run it through the planer. Why not continue running the material through the jointer to achieve the desired flatness and thickness?
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 3 жыл бұрын
Because a jointer doesn’t create parallel planes. It can flatten a single face only. If you use it to flatten the other face too, you’ll likely end up with a taper. You need the planer to create a surface that runs parallel to the jointed surface.

Hi, interested to see what you’re now doing ref the mitre saw. From watching other videos of yours it seems that you’ve been on a circular journey: Kappex, Bosch with the fancy arm, simple non-slider (think it was yellow), now back to Kappex. Are you now settled? Comes across to me that this hasn’t been something you’ve been happy with. Be interested in hearing your latest thoughts on this; perhaps it’s another video

How do you see the marks at 23:25? It doesn't look like you've extended them up to the top of the reference stock?

@@woodwhisperer But how do you see them once you put the Domino down? Like how do you align the Domino to that mark?

Is there a reason why you rough cut the lumber on the band saw instead of table saw?

Yup. It’s safer and wastes less wood.

Dominos can be a great time saver, but effective glue surface is significantly reduced over a traditional M&T that has a larger cheek. With this desks dramatic angel for the legs, there is a severe amount of torque on that joint so I’m surprised of this choice. Personally, I don’t think of the domino as a Replacement for the M&T, but a significantly improved doweled joint.
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 3 жыл бұрын
You should reconsider how you think about them. Multiple tenons are often stronger than one large one. Joint strength is about more than just glue surface. I agree that there’s a good chance a more traditional joint would be stronger in this particular application, but that doesn’t mean the Dominos aren’t strong enough to do the job. Time will tell. 😊

Are you using sanded dominoes for those test assemblies? I can never seem to replicate easy fit up like you do in your videos.
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 3 жыл бұрын
Mine are lightly sanded. But remember I’m in Denver and it’s very dry here. If you live in a more humid area, you’ll have a tighter fit.
