What advice would you give someone whose not experienced enough to be a landscape designer, but has a lifelong passion for plants & likes the idea of designing gardens &/or planting plants with a landscape design company?

Hey I'm looking to enroll in a landscape design certificate/ diploma program. Do you have any recommendations on the best ones? cost does not really matter but the quality and depth of learning do. looking for something extensive.

Apologies if this was addressed in a previous video, but did you know what area of LA you wanted to go into (or did you discover it along the way): residential vs. public for example. I've met some LAs and I can clearly see the pros/cons of each.
@DesignItGreen
@DesignItGreen Жыл бұрын
I think I naturally fell into the type of work within the space. For me I really liked the public aspect as you are able to help a wider range of people and the projects are more interesting to me

Well Darin, I started out in a private design/build firm after school which was a bit daunting but I learned a lot by building the very designs I created on the board including implementing my own grading plan operating a bulldozer and a backhoe for excavating drainage swales. But then another opportunity opened up and I ended up designing huge projects in a team environment for the public at a Federal agency. That job was very rewarding because I watched people using and enjoying my recreation and community spaces and avoiding the consequences of certain natural hazards through my designs. It paid very well (eventually 6 figures) and had great benefits for myself and my family while traveling to interesting places for work and further training. Largely depends on what you want out of your work Darin.

@@richarddrum9970 thanks for your thoughtful reply! It’s great to see the varying trajectory of one’s career path but also affirming in that there’s no linear one. It really does seem like this field allows you to shape, reshape and reinvent yourself. I’m very much drawn to larger, public spaces, coastal or flood mitigation projects. But I’m going to try and keep and open mind so I don’t silo myself too early on, as, quite frankly, a lot of projects interest me. Thanks!

I’m seriously considering landscape architecture because I love garden design and have experience in carpentry and felt it would be a good combined degree to study landscape architecture. I’m studying A-Level maths currently at B level. Do you think that would be enough to get through the door into uni?

Hey, Carder! This is my first video of yours, so I don’t know much about your channel yet, but I already appreciate your perspective and your directness about the pay and difficulty of the job. Since that doesn’t dissuade me in the least, I have just one question. I have heard of t-level courses and shadowing and apprenticeships for architecture, but I was wondering if there is such a career path for landscape architecture as well. I’d like to avoid going into debt and would like to begin working as soon as possible. What sort of education/work experience should I look at? Would work in construction be beneficial?
@DesignItGreen
@DesignItGreen 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for finding the channel! I definitely think field experience is certainly very valuable. A few examples would be to work for an arborist, at a nursery or landscape contracting (not the lawn mowing peeps) . As for learning about landscape architecture I don't really have an answer for how to get the education piece without going to school currently

Hey quick question. I am not trained in architecture design, but I will soon have a PhD in weed science! What are your thoughts on getting into the industry with this type of weed science/ecological/environmental science background?
@DesignItGreen

Honestly not sure, while the ecological/science background will certainly be helpful you really need specific training in design as well before you hop into the workplace

Is there a place for entomologists in landscape architecture that isn’t incredibly niche? I studied entomology in undergrad and am interested in grad school. What does pursuing LA look like for gradschool with no previous experience?
@sigmaslaughter1441
@sigmaslaughter1441 4 ай бұрын
There plenty of Landscape Architecture practices that have ecologists on their team, because before constructors can start excavating/building, there must be an assessment of the projects impact on the local environment, ecology and overall character. You could become one of these ecologists, that specialises in conducting such surveys. In addition, you could likely work as an ecologist for a forestry commision, specialising in assessment of tree health, in context of disease, insect habitation etc.. Hope this helps... anymore questions feel free..

Good video! Was it easy for you to get a job after your education in landscape architecture? Do you have any advice that could make it easier to get the first job? Many workplaces where I live they search for people with at least 2 years of experience, which is hard if you haven’t got a first job…

I was fortunate enough to have a job lined up before I graduated so it was easy for me. But I do know there is an endless struggle for seeing job positions posted as "entry level" that require 2-3 years of experience. But that said, most of my classmates had jobs in the field within 3 months of graduating college

@DesignItGreen
@DesignItGreen Жыл бұрын
You could go the design build route in residential, they are usually very involved in both sides. Or being a city planner, while a city planner doesn't necessarily get involved with the specifics of each building and landscape they do get a say in the larger role. Otherwise it's just really hard to manage a large scale project for landscape architecture and architecture.
