Let's open up some designer handbags and goodies I picked up from Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Chloe during my last trip to France. They’re luxury goods for sure, but thanks to the EU's VAT refund, I saved a ton of money!
I’ll share exactly what I bought, how much I bought it for, and how much I saved by buying them in France. I'll also tell you everything you need to know about the VAT refund process so you can save money with a VAT refund while buying designer handbags on your next eurotrip, too!

Hi Did you have to pay duty and taxes when u came back from Europe? I feel that it is one topic that noone discusses. Some ppl wrote that if u take the tags and box off they may let u go. I see that u have the full box and etc, can I ask ?

You would definitely need to pay taxes on it since there’s a certain $ limit that you have to respect. Taking the tags off can be tricky because if they’re suspicious that you bought it there & they don’t see exactly how much you paid, they might “price” it according to them and that amount is always higher which results in your paying more in taxes. I’d recommend only bringing 1 or 2 purses with you and then buying only 1 or 2 in France, that way it makes it more believable that you already had them

Also, even if we were charged the duty and taxes, wouldn’t it still be cheaper to buy it in France than the United States, even with the taxes?

@@troyelam8978 Yes basically you act as if you bought them prior to your trip. I’m just saying not to make it obvious because they are aware that people buy things and pretend they already owned them to skip out on paying taxes. But sure, it could still be less expensive overall, you’d have to calculate it beforehand to make sure it’s worth it even if you have to pay extra

My 2 cents, at the LV store in Madrid I purchased two scarfs for a friend, each was half the price of what she was expected to pay in Dallas. Some items like mens belts or wallets were only a few dollars cheaper but with the VAT I think it's worth purchasing in EU.

Question. When you say the exchange rate… does that mean buying it in euros vs US dollars? So would you charge this to a CC in euros?

I did a video about the updated VAT experience and how it works (including getting the best exchange rate), but you have the option of paying in euros or USD. if you have a credit card with no international fees I would suggest paying in euros

Yes I charged to CC in euros. Just make sure your credit card doesn't have any foreign transaction fees!

There's no fine. You do have to declare the goods when returning to the US. If the total amount of goods purchased by your party exceeds $800 per person in your party, you’ll have to pay tax on the overage. From afar.com: …you have to declare your goods when you come back to the United States, and a customs officer may want to see your items if you’ve spent over $800. You may also have to pay duty, depending on the value of your purchase and the size of your party. The first $800 (per person) is tax free, the $1,000 after that is taxed at 3 percent, and beyond that the rate is variable.

I bought 2 bags 1-YSL and 1-LV this last trip to Paris in April. This trip I really noticed the price difference. Same with Hawaii. I bought my fendi sunshine tote there and it was $600 cheaper than the states.

What's the paperwork process?

The store handles the paperwork for you. Just bring your passport (non-EU) to the store, let them know you intend to get a VAT refund, and they'll give you the completed form along with your purchase. Just scan the form at an airport kiosk like in the end of the video when you leave the EU. Happy shopping!

But as I know so far you have to file out custom duty clearance of what you have purchased outside US. And usually getting few of luxury products, it will easily break through the threshold of the personal exemption and we have to pay duty tax on them. And it's not recommend to hide them from custom check, cuz once they found out, we will get a huge fine. So I guess the savings is not as much as you suggested on the video 🙂

Correct, you cannot use your new items until you are back in the US. The threshold for duty-free is quite high at $800 per individual, and family members can combine this amount so that if you have 2 family members, you're allowed $1,600 of tax exemption. Then $1,000 per person of tax rate at 3%. So you'd pay $60 tax on $3,600 of goods, which is 1.6%. So yes, be prepared for possibly 1.6% less savings if you're bringing back $3,600 of goodies.

Just deduct 11-14% for the VAT refund at the airport and add about 2-3% at US Customs when coming back to the states. Or just deduct 7-8%.
