You're so right about rich people not needing to show their wealth. When I was in college, I knew a girl who was legitimately wealthy. Like "more money than God" wealthy. Its not being made in a sweatshop - its not being made to finance terrorism... its gold and diamonds. The REASON why there are chinese "artisans" who can replicate pretty much any bag is because a lot of them most likely worked in these big brand factories - they know which tanneries to buy leather (the 'super fakes' are not being made by some kid chained up in the back room with crap leather) - a lot of these bigger brands are having piece meal parts made in China then shipping it back to their countries to assemble some pieces to say Made in Italy, Made in France, etc.

For me, I like making the things I wear, or customizing cheap and second hand things. Of course, I don’t make high quality craftsman leather bags, but I don’t like bags anyway because I think they all look roughly the same. The feeling of making an item of clothing (or decor, or space in your house, etc) match you perfectly is far better than trying to buy things that you think might appease the senses of others-others who do not care about you or what you wear.

As an alternative to designer handbags, I've been moving more in the direction of furoshiki. They are wonderful for changing up your look because you can just use a different fabric depending on your outfit. And because they are fabric they are easy to wash and fold away for the next time you want to use them. A lot less expensive than a designer handbag, even if you splurge and buy a beautiful silk one, and much more customizable. You can even buy some handles for it as well if you don't like holding the cloth, but honestly it's not necessary.

So glad you’re speaking on this!! I have some very affluent relatives and what I’ve learned from them are that they don’t need to “act” rich. They drive used cars-nice cars but used. And they don’t get new cars every few years, they drive them for a long time . They wear clothes that are timeless and last for years-no fast fashion,no big labels, nothing like that. They are also very generous and don’t need to ACT any certain way because they truly ARE wealthy. They don’t post about what they have on social media, there’s just no need. They are too busy living their lives and tending to their own dealings to care what others think of them.

They flew me to Vegas, and we went shopping in the LV store in the Forum Shops at Caesars. I still have the box, the dust bag, and the receipt that came with the bag. I carried it until the pandemic, but stopped bc it’s a bigger bag, and it was easier to do crossbody bags once we were having to disinfect our hands and everything else every few minutes lol. Even tho things have settled down pandemic wise, I really like having my hands free, but still having my bag on my body and within my control at all times so my LV bag is put away in it’s dust bag in my closet. I’ve thought about selling it since I don’t carry it anymore, but haven’t done so. I certainly wouldn’t buy another one when I don’t use the one I have, but that’s just my situation. I only just realised like... i was also wearing a scrappy paint-splattered sweater and my mum's 30 year old trenchcoat that had tears in the sleeves and bobbles all over it. They probably thought i was looking to rob the place, but i left with a £100 suede cap - the most expensive accessory, and one of the most expensive pieces of clothing i've ever bought for myself - and for like 10 years, i've always thought "weird how they hover around you in designer stores innit?" and i've only been in one or two lux clothing stores since due to the discomfort of being watched lmao i still wear that hat, and that trench btw, they look great together /wee rant, ended

FANTASTIC video, Stephanie! How about a part 2 about how most of this designer ridiculousness is made in the same sweatshops as low end goods AND the fakes? Case in point, I just saw an article exposing Dior and Armani for having their bags made in China where workers are paid less than $3 to make them. These brands no longer use skilled local artisans, because they don't have to. This luxury scam has become a mental illness, for heaven's sake. And most of it is UGLYYYYY! What's the point, anyway? Who are they trying to impress? Snobs who only want rich "friends" - that's who! Life is too damn short for this silliness.
