i guess going broke is the new influencer flex?

why DO so many influencers go broke? let’s start with the delusional belief that the influencing money will last forever. that the popularity you may currently have on your chosen social media platform, will just continue growing - unfortunately, it doesn’t always work like that. Spending everything that you earn and THEN some, on frivolous things like designer handbags and shoes, flying on private jets and leasing range rovers and g-wagons is only going to send you broke. But I get it. When you suddenly start earning more money that you ever expected, it can burn a hole in your pocket. Saving and investing seems so boring compared to shopping trips and luxury hauls. But getting in control of your finances is SO important - and empowering! I dont care if you earn $20 an hour or $2000. Learning about personal finance, so that YOU control your money instead of it controlling you - is SO important.
I speak from experience. I used to be $27,000 in debt, and I was in my early 20s! Honestly, I’m not even sure what I spent it on, because I had nothing to show for it. When I realised the mess I was in, you best believe I started to learn about money, because I did NOT like the stress and worry that debt bought along with it.
Here’s a few of my favourite books and podcasts on money:
- Dave Ramsey! His books are what I read when I needed to get out of debt (I know some people think he’s a bit rude (and he can be), but he also has very solid advice surrounding debt!)
- 'You are a badass at making money' book by Jen Sincero
LOVE YOU GUYS!!

you can’t convince me the influencer lifestyle is worth it. as a young woman working an average crappy job there’s nothing boring or sad about my life it’s full of good things. i can’t imagine the pressure of being in circles or communities where you need to spend hundreds of thousands on your clothes and appearances just to fit in. it’s a monster really

You’re right, it’s not worth it and these people live a sad and empty life, they are extremely narcissistic and unhappy which is why they have to post online to show everybody how “amazing” their lives are 😂😂😂 If someone’s Instagram is filled with pics/ selfies of them in designer they are super narcissistic and self absorbed

@@tmcbgrrl0074I’m so sorry, that’s hard! She clearly needs help, if it’s possible she should start using the envelope system. Disconnect and cancel every card she has access to. Every week she gets an envelope with exactly the money she needs for real expenses- groceries, etc. A lot of people benefit from being able to see the money they’re spending, and when the envelope is empty, it’s empty. Above all she needs to figure out why she needs to buy so much on Amazon and fix her root issue.

I cleaned my debt up in my twenties, had a perfect credit score, then got divorced and filed for bankruptcy in my thirties. Then when you file for bankruptcy, they bombard you with buying a car and opening credit cards. It's just another trap to get you back into the cycle. I now have no debt, no credit cards and buy everything locally. I REFUSE to get caught again. I also live waaayyyyy below the poverty level, on purpose, because I've taught myself to only purchase necessities. I might buy something nice once a year, but not often. Second hand items are my favorite. I know this is extreme, but I believe mass consumption is a SEVERE problem with society and community. I would like to create a new way of LIVING. No more survival mode. It can be done🕯

It breaks my heart to think that young women watch these influencers and believe that what they are showing them is true or desirable. Why are we raising girls (primarily girls) to either not be able to see what is true or not, or to crave something that is so empty and illusory? I think, as parents, we have failed abjectly. If we cannot raise our children to step into the world full of joy and curiosity and common sense, then we are nothing.

I mean, if you only read the headlines about it. Went to look into it because that sounds ridiculous, and the article is based on a semiviral video of her talking about her lifelong struggle with an eating disorder. The real quote is along the lines of "I would compare myself to edited pictures of models like Miranda Kerr in magazines" which is a lot less silly and a lot more real. I think the experience of body dysmorphia/disordered eating is the only thing most will have in common with Christie. It's disgusting that tabloids love to trivialize the issues they contribute to the most, especially when the whole article is basically rewriting her dark and personal KZbin video to be clickbait.

While I agree to an extent, it is very hard for some people to escape the pressure and influence of what is portrayed in social media, the media in general, and pressure from friends. Financial responsibility is not taught to most kids or teens, and many people go bankrupt. There are also many financial institutions (ie credit card companies) that promise people easy funds. They purposely prey on susceptible people. Yes vanity is a problem but there are a ton of institutions enabling spending. The phrase “keeping up with the Joneses” is around for a reason too. I dunno. There are just a lot of influences and not a lot of education about the consequences.

How often will you use it? Think about it and then come back to it and see if you really need it or if it was just a temporary urge to get it. You don't need designer bags. Get a normal one with more space to carry your things.

There are good loans and bad loans. Buying a house with a mortgage to get on the property ladder has historically been a good move. He was strongly encouraged and advised by successful family members to be smart with it and invest wisely. Being the arrogant man that he was he decided he knew better. He immediately quit his job, spent everyday eating out and going to the bar, bought drinks for everyone, soaked up all the attention and then was shocked when the money ran out in less than 8 months. I love the video so much!! This is such an important lesson that a lot of people had to learn the hard way. Amazing job :))

If anyone watching is young: start saving money as soon as you can. You'll be so glad you did. And living within your means brings so much peace.

I always enjoy your videos but this video and the other one on luxury influencers are so necessary and relatable because social media can be so harmful to younger, naive audiences. Thank you for being so authentic and putting out brutally honest content. ❤

Steph thank you for saying that you were in debt, I’m in debt too and I look back and can barely tell you anything that I used that money for. Because of that I have a lot of shame and embarrassment and it always feels like everyone’s doing better than me, I’m on a journey and hope to be debt free one day! Thanks for keeping it real 💯

These influencers are so annoying. One day they are going to wake up and realize how stupid and selfish they are.

I think people who call themselves influencers should nowadays be called social media parasites. 😂

So glad you make these videos. Me and My husband started trying to do way too much for a couple of years. We now have credit card debt, but ours was more taking the kids on vacation and spending too much for gifts. We’ve learned from that now we just do free stuff and pay our debt off. We make sure something is worth it before we spend. It’s a hard lesson but essential for a peaceful life

I feel like I have no money but my car is paid off and I have no credit card debt. So I guess that's good.
