It breaks my heart to think that young women watch these influencers and believe that what they are showing them is true or desirable. Why are we raising girls (primarily girls) to either not be able to see what is true or not, or to crave something that is so empty and illusory? I think, as parents, we have failed abjectly. If we cannot raise our children to step into the world full of joy and curiosity and common sense, then we are nothing.

We learn a lot of that in math class, though. I remember those word problems about how to calculate interest and compound interest, especially. Schools don't have time to teach us everything, but they teach us critical thinking skills and basic math, which should be a good start for learning the rest. I know it's not a popular opinion, but I don't think a lack of knowledge of these things is the main problem - it's folks spending to impress others and thinking the money will never dry up.

While I agree to an extent, it is very hard for some people to escape the pressure and influence of what is portrayed in social media, the media in general, and pressure from friends. Financial responsibility is not taught to most kids or teens, and many people go bankrupt. There are also many financial institutions (ie credit card companies) that promise people easy funds. They purposely prey on susceptible people. Yes vanity is a problem but there are a ton of institutions enabling spending. The phrase “keeping up with the Joneses” is around for a reason too. I dunno. There are just a lot of influences and not a lot of education about the consequences.

My parents always said to never take out loans. Stay away from loans as best as you can. When it comes to items in general my advice would be to think about it. Do you really need it? How often will you use it? Think about it and then come back to it and see if you really need it or if it was just a temporary urge to get it. You don't need designer bags. Get a normal one with more space to carry your things.

There are good loans and bad loans. Buying a house with a mortgage to get on the property ladder has historically been a good move. There may be advantages to borrowing to make retirement contributions before a tax filing deadline, etc. Carrying a balance on a high interest credit card because you spend more money than you make is on the other end of the spectrum.

This was amazing and I totally agree that many people aren’t taught how to manage their finances properly. However, some people are just plan stupid when it comes to money and there is no helping them. Example: my ex inherited 100k when his mother passed away. He was strongly encouraged and advised by successful family members to be smart with it and invest wisely. Being the arrogant man that he was he decided he knew better. He immediately quit his job, spent everyday eating out and going to the bar, bought drinks for everyone, soaked up all the attention and then was shocked when the money ran out in less than 8 months. He thought it would last him 5+ years.

My dad worked for decades with people who struggled financially. Here are a few things that he taught me: 1. Write your expenses down. EVERYTHING. If you can, on paper, because that forces you to really focus on them. Then break them down in two categories: NEED (Bills, mortgage, gas, food...) and WANT (home decor, hobbies,...). Break the WANT section down again into categories (e g. cosmetics, clothing,...) Then dig deeper: What are things that I don't need to buy, if I'm tight on money? 2. Calculate your income: At first, subtract the money that you will need this month (for the NEED category mentioned above) from your income. This is money that you can not spend for anything else. Then see how much is left after that. For the rest: Divide it by the days until you get your next income. This will leave you with an amount that you can spend on one day, for example 20$. If you stay below that, good for you. If you get over it because you have more expenses, try to save those 20$ on the next day. 3. Always try to save some money for hard times. Not everybody has the means to invest their money. No amount is too small to be saved. If you save 10$ per month, you have 120$ at the end of the year. It may seem like nothing, but even the small amounts can help you out in times of need or a crisis. I don't think anybody will actually find this comment, but if you do, maybe you find something helpful in it. Also, English is not my first language, so I apologize for spelling/grammar mistakes or wording things weirdly.

Thank you so much for addressing such an important topic! It's crazy what kind of "lifestyle" these irresponsible influencers are imposing on young people who are so easy to be brainwashed. I just felt the need to add my thought about teaching children about money responsibility in school: In my opinion it is not really the school's responsibility to educate children about taxes or whatever involves spending money correctly. I can hardly imagine that young people at the age of 16 or 18 are very interested in taxes and by the time most of them get to spend time on taxes, they will have forgotten everything about it. It is rather important that their parents and their environment teach them to act in a responsible way with money and to spend or save it correctly. We should not forget how important private influence and the parent's view on money is on young children. It all starts with pocket money and presents and goes on to managing a first bank account and this is how family should be an adequate influencer. We can only imagine how bad of a good impact these families were on those broke influencers...
