@ChelseaCoryell2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lauren, great question. Hopefully, you'll have a long and successful career filled with projects that YOU love. There will always be those that aren't your style and that's fine. Just ask yourself, "Did I create a happy customer, and was I paid what I'm worth?" If the answer is yes, then it's a success. They can't all make it in the portfolio. Your presentation is where you show them what you're selecting. Custom furniture always has to have their approval first.

Hello, I really appreciate your SUPPORT, and your excitement that prove your love to interior design, I'm a follower from Morocco the north africa, I'm hyper passioned about starting a mini project in interior design filed, i get my licence in economy management, but really concerned about the idea to become a designer and improving my self in this filed by getting an online course, does it make sense or in another way is it enough if I adopt a continuous formation improving my skills without obtaining a degree, looking up to your precious answer coz I'm confused a little bit !!!
@ChelseaCoryell4 жыл бұрын
You do not need a degree to succeed in interior design, while it may look great to have, I have been through schooling and they really don't teach you a lot of the necessities of the business side. Schooling is great for the information side and learning about the different eras and styles however in my course I only focus on the necessities when it comes to running and interior design business successfully. I do go over the fundamentals of design taught in school but I subtract all the fluff that you don't need. Basically I get straight to the point in my course and many have found this more valuable than traditional schooling. If you complete the entire intensive course you will walk away with all the knowledge you need to start your own business confidently and a certification of completion to show that you know your stuff!

I am excited about the certification by you...I make craft vlogs.. My problem is I am a mother of toddler and I don’t have any interior designing background but but ,this is what I wanted to do all my life and Ian completely passionate about..I have actually great taste for designing..but I wanted your advice..should I go for it? Is it too late to do it now..help please.. thanks a ton in advance..it would be a life saving advice..believe me 😂xoxo
@ChelseaCoryell5 жыл бұрын
It's NEVER too late Aditi. Most of the most famous interior designers are older, (it's when our life experiences are a plus and only add to our design talent). If you have the passion, which it sounds like you do, then you'll make it work. I have always made my kids my number 1 priority as a designer and it's never stopped me. As long as you can find 12 hours a week of quiet "Mommy Work" time, and 8 hours of out of the house, you'll need to have someone watch your toddler time, then you're golden! Most clients want to meet in the evenings or on weekends which I've found is a much easier time to find someone to babysit. If you're ready to get started, go to my website, www.designforaliving.com and grab the free eBook on my main page. You'll be on my contact list that way and get all of my latest news.

Do you need an EIN number with a sole proprietorship?
@ChelseaCoryell4 жыл бұрын
A sole proprietor without employees and who doesn't file any excise or pension plan tax returns doesn't need an EIN (but can get one). In this instance, the sole proprietor uses his or her social security number (instead of an EIN) as the taxpayer identification number.

Chelsea, I want to make a mid-life career change from being an independent editor to working in interior design. BUT, I don't have an interior design education/degree or certificate. So technically, I guess I'd need to call myself an interior decorator. Bur I'm thinking that I need to find an interior designer/decorator who could mentor me, perhaps someone I could apprentice under. I have a lot to learn. Do you have any suggestions about how to go about finding someone? (Design/decor is in my bones and blood, but of course, I need to learn from a professional.) I'm trying to decide whether it'd be best to learn how to mock up some mood boards and/or floor plans so I could show anyone I approach that I'm at least serious?

This workbook gives you a sneak peek as to what my full three course program offers. In my paid program, there are three sections. Visit my website at www.designforaliving.com where you will be able to join my email list and continue to converse there! I would love to mentor you through this process of becoming a certified interior designer because going through this program will truly turn your passion into profit!

I live in a VERY small area, population-wise, with restricted access to unusual design products/materials/supplies, except what is available through online sources, etc. Recently, I designed and helped to purchase supplies, furniture, decor, etc., for a friend's house. Afterward, a friend of hers asked her for my contact information so he could surprise his wife at Christmas with a design package. As a result, I have tentatively decided to begin an interior design consulting business. My question is this- how do I put together a consulting fee schedule? How do I charge, etc.? Someone suggested, because I am just starting out and haven't a diploma or degree in design, to charge $20 hrly., but to explain that fee and that it even includes design advice phone calls (like a lawyer would) and shopping fees. Any ideas? Also, how would I put together a standard contract?

Not sure if this is good advice. Interior decorators don’t need much education but interior designing do! You should know how to properly measure a room for a safe space planning, construction documents, AutoCad, 3D rendering, lighting, electrical and much more. You can get sued if you are designing without any code or construction knowledge. I seen many projects from amateur designers that are unsafe for clients, rearranging a space that can lead to a fire or buying toxic materials and paint that can cause the death of children. Just because this lady had success doesn’t mean she’s correct. Take some classes and have at least prior knowledge before starting, it can save you tons of headaches and money.
