am definitely considering to choose interior design as my major in college but I am very confused on whether it suited me or not. I have a high sense of art, especially when it comes to decorating a room. I am just wondering do interior designers decorate rooms along with the points you mentioned? Can an interior designer be interior decorators at the same time?

Absolutely! Firstly, I woudl trust your instinct and follow your heart. When I was younger I was sad that no-one guided me in my career. Then I realised later in life how much of a blessing it was because it meant that I had to learn to listen to my heart and follow what I wanted to do and what I was interested in. As a result, I absolutely love what I do every day and it never feels like work! To answer your question about decorators, yes! You can read a bit of detail about my opinion on this in one of my blog posts: www.idbs.online/interior-designer-interior-stylist-interior-decorator-interior-architect-whats-the-difference/ Good luck Afnan. Follow your heart! Being an interior designer is wonderful and for us, creatives and is such a fantastic career. @@Theoneandonlyjjs honestly you need math, but it's not the kind of math that you learn in high school. The math that you learn is specifically taught for your career, and honestly, if you decide to study interior design, it won´t be all about math. Yes, you will have to know the dimesions of some places, furniture, people and in general all of those are just gemoetrical figures and you won´t have to do any physics which makes it easier, but you will obviously use math, it just won´t be the thing that you will use the most and if you do it won´t be hard.

In Canada, you need to have a minimum of education in interior design, which is a diploma (2 years), and 3 years of full-time experience in design if you are looking for a job. But I know designers who barely have the certificate ( one year) but are running successful businesses by hiring more qualified employees than themselves. Education is design is very important in Canada.
@interiordesignschool12 күн бұрын
Yes some places take education to the extreme but my interpretation of that is that they're trying to protect "interior architecture" and interior designers who do building regulations work (so interior designers who do architecture basically) - not specifically interior design (set out in the scope of work of an average interior designer) because when you look through the regulations in each state even those with title or practise acts all they are wanting to do is to protect specifically a certain type of person who is designing a certain type of building (not every building and in 99% of cases almost never residential buildings under a certain size... because they know that would be silly considering anyone can do that for themselves anyway and it would be hard to argue... although there ar places that get away with it!)

Thank you so much for responding, Jo. You’re absolutely right-anyone can design to some extent. Personally, I’ve always preferred working with designers who have formal education. Back in 2015, I designed my own home without any formal knowledge or experience. I had no idea what I was doing, and I focused more on selecting materials, finishes, and furniture that matched my taste to make the space beautiful. That experience is what inspired me to pursue interior design and enrolled at BCIT ( one of the well known design schools in Vancouver) .However, when I started my studies, I quickly realized just how deep and complex the process is. I eventually earned a diploma in residential design, and while it was challenging, it was incredibly rewarding to achieve something I’m so passionate about. I have worked for 18 months in the industry and I’m currently looking for a better company to work for or starting my own. Will see how that goes. ☺️ I love your insights and advice and I’m learning so much. 👍

Unfortunately I’m in one of those states that require licensing. It’s such a pain because we have to take an exam from the NCIDQ that requires about 3,500 hours of experience, before we can be licensed! I think it’s very unfair.
@interiordesignschool4 жыл бұрын
It kills me as I see what it does to the industry. Those who get registered think they're more worthy as designers (they're not- they just got tricked into paying a money-making organisation that saw a gap in the market to regulate a profession that doesn't need regulating) and those that can never get qualified (usually due to lack of finances, coming from poorer backgrounds) are kept at lower pay levels because they're seen as second rate designers ( by other designers not by real clients who don't care at all about whether a designer is regulated or not - they just want a true honest service and just because someone isn't paying to be part of an exclusive club, doesn't mean that they aren't a fantastic, honest, talented designer, in most cases,they just can't afford to take 4 years off to do a meaningless degree without pay and then work for free as a hobby because "they don't need to get paid") In all honesty,those states that require regulation should leave signing off construction drawings to those qualified professions such as architects and engineers (and stop all of this nonsense that interior designers can kill people - omg seriously - I've seen them glorifying themselves and comparing themselves to surgeons!) Interior designers should be just that. Interior designers and if they work on commercial projects, then they should use a signing off architect. (My two cents, you can see I'm very passionate about this!) Keep an eye on your local government decisions about deregulation, I really think it's the way the industry is moving. x

I am on the same path. I just applied to the basic interior design certificate and was accepted in the NYSID distance learning (online) program part time. I also live in Florida and I am a professional in a different industry looking to change careers. So in other words, yes, you can apply for either a certificate (quick two semesters part time or full time), an associates, or a bachelors degree depending on how far you want to go with it. I believe you just need a highschool degree to apply for any of those undergraduate programs

Hi Marlene, Florida recently deregulated the interior design profession for domestic interior designers, so that means as long as you undertake residential work (not commercial like cafes, hotels, offices etc.) you don't need a certificate or any training at all to provide the service. Of course, you still need to know what you're doing, so getting some kind of training will help you to know how to provide the services and do a great job for your clients. Hope this helps! x

An architecture degree is the best education you can get in this industry (at the moment). Then interior design degrees teach you some interior architecture but in most cases you still won't be able to use the title interior architect with that kind of degree. So I would suggest getting a degree in architecture if you can and taking as many interiors related subjects as possible but graduating with an architectural degree. Diplomas DON'T MEAN ANYTHING TO ANYONE, it's the sad truth. If you do a diploma (you can do one on line for $15) it's really quite meaningless so you're doing it to make yourself feel like you have a qualification (when you don't even need one...) If you want a more in-depth explanation into which course is best,check this blog post out, it has lots of examples and guidance: www.idbs.online/whats-the-best-course-to-do-to-become-an-interior-designer/ Hope that helps x

Hi Priscilla, In all honesty, most courses teach very much the same stuff (sad but true - in order to be regulated they have to tick similar boxes to each other...) so I'd check what is required legally to practise in your area and then make an informed decision from there. Hi Jo. I’m here in the US (Chicago specifically). I have an undergrad degree in an unrelated field so I’m looking into master degrees to get into interior design. I’m a little confused on if I should get a degree in architecture or get a degree in what some schools are calling interior architecture (which is essentially interior design and CID accredited). Is architecture still the best route? What would you suggest?
@interiordesignschool3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lunar! It depends on if you ever want to work in architecture. If not, then the interior architecture degree is fine for interior design, but you'll never call yourself an architect with an interior architecture degree, unfortunately (at least in the current world). Focusing specifically on interior architecture will be quite a niche, it will elevate your skills to higher than that of a typical interior designer but you'll never qualify as an architect so it can be a frustrating place to end up. I'd decide on what your BIG end goal is and take it from there. Hope this helps you to decide! xxx

Do you suggest the Master's degree or do you think a course would be a better decision? I'll appreciate your response!

It depends on which area of the states you want to practise in, unfortunately. If interior design is regulated then you'll need at least a diploma or degree, but in many states it's not regulated at all so you don't have to do either :-) I'd start looking into whether your state is regulated first and then call the Interior Design (or architecture) body in that state and check what the requirements are in order to call yourself and interior designer. From there you can make an informed decision. Hope this helps x

Hi Priya! Thank you for your question. I truly believe that you should get a few years of experience in the domestic sector if you're starting from scratch in interior design before you start working on commercial projects. You just "don't know, what you don't know" and there are so many areas you can make mistakes. Deadlines are usually very tight and there is no area for mistakes. We all make mistakes but you don't want to be making them on a commercial project. So I woudl grow my practical experience running interior design projects first (in the domestic sector) before starting commercial work. No vocational course out there will give you the information required to run a commercial project properly. In my opinion, you either need a degree or some project experience before getting started. I hope that helps! Good luck on your journey!

In my country in the Philippines, Interior Design is a 4 years course and you need to graduate in order to be called an Interior Designer.
@interiordesignschool3 жыл бұрын
Yes in the Philippines there is a practise act as well as a title act. It is also illegal for an overseas interior designer to undertake work within the Philippines without splitting the work with a local designer. It's very restrictive. It is one of the only places in the world that has laws like this in place.

Of course, you will be able to transfer credits (that's how I got into architecture in the first place (just early on in my first year.. I did a different degree and then transferred into architecture). Every degree/course is different so I would look in your area as to which suits you best. Transferring between the same university is almost the same as transferring to another university and typically much easier to do than applying straight out of school, so you're at an advantage, especially if you already have an above credit average. Hope this helps!

Hi there, you can learn to draw using a free program online called SketchUp. All you need is a computer, a mouse, web browser and an internet connection. There are thousands of free youtube videos on learning to draw, a few of my favourites are: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rF7bdHeXlNGgi7M they are called SketchUp School and another I like is this guy who's been around for ages: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5DFe4OEo7RmfrM have a great day and enjoy learning this wonderful and valuable skill!

Hello there! I did not know how to contact you so I thought maybe it would be a good idea to comment on here. I have a couple questions regarding the interior design course I am currently doing. I have always been passionate in the arts and found that I had an interest in architecture early on in my years as a high school student. Coming out of high school I was looking for a suitable course for me. I was leaning towards architecture but as I found out there was a lot of maths and physics involved I stepped away immediately. However, I found interior design and thought it was an interesting career to look into. So I decided to work as an intern at an interior design firm for about 4-5 months. I was mostly just assisting basic tasks but I did get to experience the work flow of busy interior designers. I was quite intrigued and stunned by the amazing work they produced. But I was also hit by the reality of stress and pressure that they had to be under. I was quite conflicted with how I felt about the career as a whole but then decided to apply for uni in Australia. I am now currently studying at RMIT (bachelor of interior design honours) which is about a 4 year course. I am in the first half of my semester and am struggling to catch up with the work flow and tasks. Everything that we are learning seems rushed and I have not had the time to take a break and properly gather my thoughts. I am having doubts about my interests and whether or not pursuing this degree would waste my time and money. I want to learn the skills of an interior designer but at a pace where I can fully grasp the content and learn the software. I’ve noticed that learning the software can be quite frustrating because of how overwhelming and complicated it can be from a beginner’s stand point. You also mentioned that if an individual were to focus on domestic interior designing, a degree may not have to be the only option available. I would like to know whether I should consider moving into a different space or continue you on for a while, to see if I begin to enjoy it more. I apologize for this very long message. Thank you for sharing the video, it made me consider a number of things and now I’m on the verge of whether I should focus on uni or find a smaller course else where. Thank you again for your advice, it was extremely helpful :))

I want a career in interior design but I don’t know witch subjects to take for it I’m still in school and toatally confused on what to take and what are required for it?!
@interiordesignschool3 жыл бұрын
I would take the subjects that you enjoy the most. If yo uneed to go to university its important that you do well (get good grades) and you're more likely to do that when undertaking subjects you like rather than subjects you're forced to take. I did that and got an excellent score (I took art, geography, biology and ...mechanics and carpentry :-) and I eventually made it into architecture even though it was one of the most competitive courses to enter at the time).

Is drawing skills necessary... I'm about to study interior designer but I don't have good drawing skills....will that be a problem??
@interiordesignschool2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the type of interior designer you want to become, but most of us require drawing (either in CAD or by hand). If you don't like drawing then you can still be an interior designer, you would just want to focus on the more hands-on side like installations, purchasing and styling. This field is so broad that there is something for everyone, so don't give up! I've never been excellent at drawing or sketching by hand but I LOVE drawing on the computer. You might have a hidden talent you don't know about yet - it could be 3D modeling :-) Give it a try!

Great advice Jo, thanks. Drawing is a skill that can be learned and improved with practice. It doesn't come naturally to me, but has improved during my degree.

Hi , I want to become a commercial interior designer .. and in a few months I start college (in pakistan) My college board is Cambridge and I dont know exactly which subjects I should take.. I'm currently choosing to study business studies, arts and design and psychology as a 3rd subject , but I'm not sure if I'm taking the right subjects, should I take maths? physics? .. please help me out. Thank you!
@interiordesignschool3 жыл бұрын
Hi Zahra, please let me know what college means in Pakistan is that still considered high school or is it post-graduate studies of some sort (sorry to be so daft it really varies from country to country)? These subjects don't sound relevant at all. Is there a design and technology subject or something that helps you design something and then build it (either physically or digitally?) Physics and maths will help but only if you want to go more into architecture/engineering and art/design will benefit interiors but the business studies and psychology woudl be more of a personal interest (and if you love those subjects I woudl choose the ones you love over the ones that I suggest because you'll do much better and the best grades are what is most important if you want to go to university and get into architecture as it's quite competitive). Hope this helps in the meantime!

I study interior design in school and I live in Bulgaria, my “plan” is to study somewhere in Europe, does that mean if I want a license do I need to go to Canada or the US to get it?
@interiordesignschool4 жыл бұрын
In most countries in Europe the title or role of interior designer is not protected, that means that if you plan to study or work as an interior designer in Europe (check each country) then you don't need a license at all. The only time you would want to consider travelling to Canada or the US (or studying at one of their institutions and then trying to pass their exams) is if you plan on working or setting up an interior design business in those states that regulate the profession - so those few states that require a license (they are changing all the time so check by contacting the government in that state that you want to work in, Florida for example just deregulated the profession in 2020). Of course is you want to waste your money on a license that doesn't mean anything you' can pay for expensive exams that won't make a difference to your career :-) Hope that helps x

Hi Zozame, you'll have to check in your country/region what is required but my choice (my opinion) would be to take architecture and then do interiors as the post-grad as your architecture degree is a higher recognised qualification in the design/construction industry.
