You could have the tank fill to 100% when surfacing, but then you can use a compressor to fill it to 125% or 150% or something. So you can still dive pretty well without your boat and compressor, but if you have your boat and compressor next to you, you can compress extra air into your tank.

This really is one of the simpler ideas, but it is also quite realistic and easy to use, and it also provides room for upgrading compressors in the future to fill tanks to higher pressure.

Happy my comment helped you out previously :) Some cool things you could add to your game are: Nitrox for deep dives, it essentially works just like air but you consume less nitrogen and can stay underwater longer. You could make this a rare or expensive resource for deep dives? It also gets quite dark underwater when you go deep so most divers use a diving lamp.
@calvinsebastian73182 жыл бұрын
Hey Devduck! I just stumbled upon your channel and am super excited to see what comes of this game! Separating your freediving from your scuba diving could resolve the issue of when to implement refilling your 02 tank. Perhaps if you allowed the player to improve their freediving abilities through practice (oxygen consumption through movement, lung capacity, resistance to the build up of carbon dioxide, implement the mammalian dive reflex, etc. and these could all passively change over time) then there would be no concern of filling the tanks until you progress further in the game (to depths that may actually require a diving tank). You can still dive to deep depths with freediving but it would just take time to build the skill to reach those depths. If you separate these activities it would provide an educational opportunity as well, as (what may be obvious to some) you wouldn't be combining these activities in real life for safety reasons. I'm going to spit ball some additional content ideas that you may already have planned, feel free to ignore or implement them. - accurate real world information about species (latin name, family, natural habitat, life span, toxicity, fun facts) - different gas types for different depths - a minigame that allows you to synchronize your breathing before a dive to increase freedive time - equalization to reduce the oxygen penalty due to depth - wildlife tagging, capturing, releasing - diet or exercise improves diving efficiency Cheers, a fan!

Great update! As a divemaster, I absolutely love seeing you take a more realistic approach to the dive mechanics. Another thing you could look at as part of the upgrade tree is different gas mixtures. Nitrox is the most popular -- it can really extend dive time if you stay relatively shallow. The trade off is the risk of oxygen toxicity of you dive too deep. Trimix is the opposite -- longer for deep dives, and dangerous in shallow water. You have to switch tanks mid dive. Maybe some of this could inspire fun mechanics!

If I were to make a suggestion, I would say it might be better to have a separate set of equipment slots specifically for diving equipment. Most players probably won't want to always be wearing their diving gear while exploring the overworld and it might get tedious to have to trek into the menu to switch equipment every time you hop into the water. You get a situation like Breath of the Wild where most of the time there's a set of armor that perfectly suits the situation - The Zora armor for swimming, some other set for combat, a set for dealing with temperature, etc - And suddenly you're constantly just changing equipment to deal with every scenario. It's a lot less intrusive if you don't have to manually switch into diving gear before every dive. Just my thoughts. I love seeing your progress, it's very inspiring for me as an beginning indie dev.

Great to see more progress on this. I agree that having to head back to the boat each dive would be a pain. Perhaps you could add a mechanic where if you do refill the tank then the player can dive for longer than just getting air from the surface. This could be used for deep underwater areas.
@Jova2 жыл бұрын
Maybe you could make it so the entry level scuba tanks can be refilled by either resurfacing or returning to a compressor. As the player gets more heavy-duty scuba tanks, they can't be refilled by resurfacing, but the air lasts much longer.

It's a little weird to have a SCUBA tank and snorkel mask without a regulator (the thing that goes in your mouth so you can breathe from your air tank), but I guess that's a sprite for Future DevDuck to implement. Only being able to refill your lungs and not your air tank is one of those ideas that sounds good until you remember this is supposed to be a game. Having only a small, constant fraction of your air supply be refillable devalues upgrades to your air supply and makes exploration more frustrating. "This is a cool spot-hope I can find it after I go back to the ship and refill my tank."

Idk what you plan to do with the diving but it's a cool idea. I always thought Pokemon gen 3 were magical because once you get the dive hm you can literally explore every place you've been to again, and see how they connect or don't connect underwater. Sometimes you find an item, or a secret item, or you find a rare Pokemon, or sometimes you just find an empty room. The aesthetic being way darker also helped give the feeling of depth. Idk, maybe something worth looking into once you have the core mechanics in place.
@Qwerty-oq4gm2 жыл бұрын
perhaps an upgradeible compressed air canister could be used that can be modified based on the players combined diving and crafting skill, and one of the upgrades could use and air compressor on the ship that will add a slightly longer time to your diving tank, and other upgrades would be cool, just a few examples here: use some of your compressed air through a release valve on the back that acts like a boost, but will also use some of your compressed air time every time you use it. or a later game upgrade that will release a lifejacket upon time running out and this will spare the item loss as a last resort but if you are too deep you will go uncontious anyway and still lose the items so people cant abuse the power of that? these are just some ideas I had floating around, if you feel like using one feel free to alter it as much as you want I'm just trying to help not force my ideas onto you! great progress so far cant wait to play!

It would be cool if you had an "arctic grade" regulator that works in icy waters while a normal reg doesn't. This isn't super realistic nowadays as regulators have gotten a lot better, but there used to be big beefy regulators for handling the cold. And don't forget a dry suit if you're going in the cold!Also an equipment spot for different quality fins-- freediving fins for not wearing a tank!

Maybe add an island where theres a population of like 20 people and have shops like a dock one where you can return the scuba tank. At endgame there can even be a mini submarine that you can use to go even deeper.

So I had a thought what if instead of a bar that slowly moves right to left you made a heart. For me personally ive always found that bars that decrease over time in water can be ver immersion breaking but what would be cool is a heart that at the beginning of a has like a steady beat and you have to mange this heart beat overtime. Your total amount of oxygen would be hidden from the player but I feel like this would create a new level of skill where more experienced players can mange there heart beat better then new players. Also this would a new layer to the early game experience where a player can learn that certain actions have a negative effect on the heart. Idk thought this would be more interesting then just a bar that slowly decreases.

I think it makes a lot of sense to not aim for 100% realism in regards to the tank. I definitely agree with you having it just capable of being refillable automagically because its a game. If you wanted to you could add an artificial limit to tanks where a passive refill would only fills it up half way or something. The device on the boat to pressurize the tank would fill it to its max. Unfortunately, I'd wonder how many people would bother using it and if this would also introduce some "friction" to the gameplay. Regardless, really exciting to watch this all come together.

On one hand having a scuba tank be refilled upon resurfacing might remove the unnecessary tedium and resulting frustration. However it might also make the equipment feel less like an functional tool aimed to improve and enhance the player and more like a boring "+1" to stats. I feel like there needs to be some new mechanic involved with the equipment that would alter the gameplay in some way. Otherwise the whole diving experience with a tank might turn into "adventure on a slightly bigger timer" instead of evolving and improving from that initial point. Edit: having a scuba tank unlock a completely new activity might achieve the same result though (i mean evolve the gameplay). Like an underwater cave exploration? Spear fishing? Tbh idk but I think this needs a bit of experimentation to figure out. I don't think I managed to explain myself well but I hope what I said does make sense and is understandable and helpful.

Also the same as Subnautica, though rather than skill level, it's equipment level... Even from the very beginning, you can dive as deep as you want... But with early equipment, you swim slow, your O2 capacity is low, and after 100m depth, your O2 consumption is doubled without specialized equipment... You can risk it by diving deeper but be careful that you can run out of air on the return trip to surface.

Seeing the message come up for advancing your skill, I think you should either freeze time/enemy around the player when they come up until they're closed, or they should be pop-ups that allow the player to move even when they're being displayed. With the update to how air supply works, I'm feeling that the limited depth for the diving skill is a tad redundant. If you lose more oxygen at lower depths, why also block the player from diving to them? Maybe the skill allows the air from your lungs to deplete slower across all levels you dive to. Outright stopping the player like that seems to go against your point about open world / exploration.
