Mazah is finally taking shape! That aside, sorry about any audio issues you may notice. We had some issues with our mic throughout the recording, and while we tried to edit out all the noise pollution, the audio isn't perfect. Enjoy anyway!

The “Evil Team” for this region should be actually two rival teams like in Ruby and Sapphire. One team looking to destroy the history of the region to advance into a new modern future, and one looking to destroy the new developments in the region in order to restore the society of the distant past. This plays in the games themes and allows for some fun design differences.

@@Subjectively I think the “After-Plot” that every Pokémon game has could focus on the ghost gym leader turned rival’s mentor figure passing on, died basically, and in your rival’s weakened mental state, she joins one of the villain teams after being told (lied to) that they could use the power of regeternal to bring her mentor back, thus the After-Plot would focus on stoping the villains and getting your friend back!

Something to consider in later drafts as well is interconnected/nonlinear routes, so that the region feels more connected between its cities and less linear like a game

Also, because the map is a spiral, I can see how it would be possible to creates sea routes, like in Gen 3. Obviously not taking the full sea size. But it can make great shortcuts and a lot of new areas to explore.

@Jacob Payne an easy remedy for that is to make the routes unlockable after story beats Not everyone enjoys that but I highly prefer it over a completely linear path

Here's an idea for an extra location. Maybe a fisherman's village or port town from where the player can hear about the Legendary Sirens or even be the place where their quest starts

They could add la Isla mujeres. And have it as a post game location. It's by Cancun, an island. It could be a nice location for the sirens or one of rhem

@@daneroberts1996 yes women island. It's a tourist location by Cancun. But I think It would be good to have the sirens since they're feminine. Or have at least one of the sirens there

Things I REALLY want to see that pokemon hasnt been doing with the newer games: -Water routes! you go back once you get surfing and suddenly, new exploration! -Route loops! Two ways to get from one part of the map to another, but one is blocked at first! Going back down that other blocked path later as a story element! Like gen 4! -Hidden ways! A cave or secret path lands you back behind or into a new part of a landmark you've already visited! Maybe there's just an item. Maybe there's a mystery~

This exactly. It’s one of the reasons I love Emerald. Once you get Surf you basically unlock an entirely new part of the game.

Kinda thinking about it, the first gym being ghost is kinda scary since a solid number of moves you’re most likely going to have access to are normal type moves

Well one of the common early Pokémon is a dark type, right? And there's no way Xolsmol wouldn't have lick. That could definitely help with balancing it out.

I don't think ghost-types are THAT scary, but by level 9 every pokemon should get their *type*-move so it shouldn't be that big of a concern. Pokemon from other gens could be in the region too, so there will be variety

México has these towns called pueblos magicos. They have a general feel and design to them that I think would be a great idea for a battle area.

This map is wonderful and beautiful, but conceptually from a route design, it’s way too linear and hardly ever has the player head back to a previous area or even somewhat travel off path, just as an alternate path to a location or to a special, yet optional, area, like the desert from Hoenn. I’m guessing the red line doesn’t show all the routes, but still, landmarks and extra locations far of the beaten path would help

I also thought this as well, after my initial post. From a gameplay stance, it would be a relatively boring region to traverse through. Artistically, it is lovely and I actually really like the shape.

I totally agree. Exploration is important and even some small optional areas that can be explored make the routes more interesting and keep the player engaged. This is alos what I don't like about sword&Shield. The wild areas are great but the rest of the routes are so boring and there are hardly any dungeons and the ones that existed were so small that you couldn't explore anything. For me personally unova had the best route design and the most fun map. I don't realyl care that much about having a nonlinear route layout as long as the routes themselves are nonlinear and explorable.

Beautiful art and great video! For this region, I think it would be cool if the upper part of the peninsula was a post-game area similar to the northeast island in Sinnoh. Also, it would be neat if there were two evil teams (like Magma and Aqua), with one representing staunch traditionalists who hate all modern technology, and one representing big corporations whose drive for progress leads to corruption. Though, I'm not sure if this would work with the legendaries you guys have planned. Looking forward to future videos!

Rather than making the modern corporation a 'team' in the traditional sense - you could have the corporation popping up frequently like the Devon Corp in RSE, with the evil Team Preserve (needs a better name) also portrayed as anarchist/conservationist as part of the traditional elements - then having a reveal around the 6th gym (as it's HQ would be in Mazah City) is that the Corporation is more nefarious and profit driven than first seems, and the evil team does have good intentions, even if their actions don't reflect that. The story of this game could be that Traditionalism and Modernism both have benefits and drawbacks, and we need both to remember our past in order to look forward to our future You could even have the Corporation CEO and evil Team Leader be related (possibly brothers?) with the evil team being a breakaway faction of the corporation, and eventually the MC and a mutual relative of the antagonists bringing them together as one more ethically driven company.

I was thinking the same thing about the upper peninsula! Maybe you could even have it that to begin with that part of the map is empty or covered by cloud or something, but when you travel there the map expands to show new routes

@@eddie-rooneither word is exactly what I want to use but struggling to find the right ones - I mean anarchist in the sense that the evil team is willing to vandalise and commit crimes to end the control of the corporation that's practically ruling the Mazah region And I mean conservative in the sense that they want to keep the cultural and traditional ways of Mazah, say hypothetically the Corporation wanted to build a hydro-electric power plant by a waterfall that was culturally significant - the evil team would destroy the plant in order to conserve the natural wonder, not because of any environmental impact, but because the plant would be destroying their culture and traditions

the art is absolutely stunning, it captures the same energy that an actual mainstream Pokémon game has in its environment and the ideas are fitting. however, like others have mentioned it is very, very straightforward. i think a nice fix to this would be to remove the red line pathing, you still know what way to go but there are more options. maybe take a mountain trail and find some rock pokémon, venture deep into the volcano through a hidden pathway and discover strong fire pokémon through the use of rock smash and strength, find a small hidden village in the large woodlands where you are free to talk to the lively inhabitants and learn about the history of the region? something along those lines.

25 years of playing Pokemon, and it took me watching this video to realize all the houses in Gen 1-4 are all facing South, and that is a super weird revelation to me.

Since Hoenn is based on Kyushu, its highly likely that all the buildings there face west.

Hi all! This is the last time I will post this idea as a comment but I hope you all like it :) How about a pokemon based on the story of popocatepetl and Itztaccihuatl. (my device can't add accents to the letters but they have some accented letters). It is a story of two volcanic mountains in the itza popo zoquiapan national Park. A princess, Itztaccihuatl and a warrior, popocatepetl fell in love. The warrior went to battle and the princess' father told her that popocatepetl had died and she died of grief. Popocatepetl returned and never left her grave, dieing so both bodies became covered in snow until they became the volcanic mountains. They could incorporate Itztalacoaliuhqui, the aztec ice god who has a pointed obsidian head for a duo of ice rock types that appear in a pair and resemble a healthy relationship. It would be a duo of pointy headed semi humanoid mountain children who evolve into a more abstract design😊

Yeah i was thinking on the same idea I would love if they design 2 volcano legendary pokemon based on the Nahua Romance of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. Popocatepetl who was an aztec warrior turned into an active smoking volcano (Fire/Fighting) and Iztaccihuatl who was an aztec princess turned into a snowy dormant volcano (Ice/Fairy). I imagine them having a design similar to the tapus but with volcano and aztec details.

@@XxPepeMasterxX oooooh yes. It's a good idea for a legendary too to be fair. I'd personally go with a common pokrmon though as we need an ice evolutionary line imo. Because Jack's efforts to use his least used types led to lots of single stage evolutions for ice but no full line. Still though, your legendary idea would also be amazing and it's cool we had the same idea. And just a thought, they could come with a good location if one more volcano is added in the south east for a pair like the volcanoes behind the legend

Your video on the first gym leader design was a lot of fun to watch, so I’d love to see one on the player character! As for this one, the map is gorgeous, and while I can’t imagine the work that would go into revising it, I’m glad to hear that you’re flexible with the design process and willing to add more and rearrange areas once the story starts to come into picture

I'd love to see future iterations of your map to include wild zones like the ones featured in Sword and Shield. You could create at least three distinct zones based on a jungle, a desert, and a zone that is primarily aquatic like an underwater coral reef.

Seeing this fleshed out makes me want local legends as Pokémon, like a ghost warrior pair of legendaries after the story of the volcanoes Popocatepetl and Ixtalzihuatl, kinda like Latios and Latias, but these 2 are lovers in their story, so not siblings lol.

I loved watching the processes for this, the gym towns currently give the region a diverse urban landscape as is, I'd love to see the side areas take more from Historical/Archeological and Current/Cultural areas, a mix of which would fit into the theme of the story pretty well! I'd be thinking like having a cool dichotomy between older important Indigenous places like the Olmec city of La Venta and the Maya city of Tulum with the more modern Indigenous population centers of Oaxaca and Yucatan. I'd also find it neat if there was reference to the oft-ignored communities of Afro-Mexicans, who come from a diverse background of Escaped US slaves, Slaves brought during the triangle trade, immigrants from Africa, and immigrants from other places in the Caribbean most notably. They face a lot of trouble currently in Mexico being recognized due to racism both in and abroad from Mexico, and the populations are usually centered in specific areas in Mexico because of this. I think giving that some recognition in the region would add an extra layer of depth that not a lot of Mexican-Inspired media brings to the table!

Oh! Please please design a Pokemon based on the myth of where the Aztecs (at least I think it was them) decided to built their capital city! How their leader saw an eagle resting on a cactus with freshly caught snake in it's talons and beak. He took it as a sign from the gods to settle there. Hell it's on the Mexican flag! I can see it being an electric type eagle pokemon. Maybe make it like Slowbro/Slowking and Mantine and add a snake pokemon as a means of evolution.

If it beats the snake in battle (possibly being a rare pokemon?) then it keeps the snake with it in its evolution

I love that you made a map! If you allow me to pinpoint an issue here is that you have a dry area in the same coast than a fertile in near proximity. The mountains usually block the winds that make an area fertile, directly in the same "line". I recommend Artifexian videos about maps!

I do think having a few videos on the gym leaders and other Trainers is important, something I often see other fan-attempts at Pokemon miss is a solid human cast to compliment the world and mons. The player character is the player character and usually just a vehicle for the, well, player, but the rest are important in selling the world. Regardless, the map looks great especially for a first iteration, and can't wait to see how it evolves as we all learn more about Mazah for the additional locales. Fun times ahead!

A video of the player characters would be great. I think a great addition to the region would be some to the west of Mexico, like Guadalajara or Tijuana as Post-game content. There’s also a City callled Mazatlán on the westcoast tha would be fitting.

Beautiful art! Can’t wait to see how it evolves with later passes. I hope you add even more ruins from the ancient civilization, maybe even some that have been adapted for modern use, demonstrating a way to maintain both tradition and modernist ideas. It’s not exactly the same but I picture the combination kind of like Wakandan architecture in the MCU but for Aztec/Mayan/Olmec societies.

If you want to do some more regional variants, a Mazahan Honedge line that drops the steel type in favor of rock as they are obsidian blades, just like the weapons of the Ancient Aztecs could be a cool idea

For a first draft, that is still a greatly detailed map that probably doesn’t need too much alterations in the future, but if it does, there probably minor! Great job!

I think that this region is stunning! The only thing is how linear it is. A fix could possibly be some sort of island in between that large city and the earlier regions in the water where it is almost interconnected to make it less linear? Thats just a concept though

I can already see like a pier in the first town being unlocked at some point that takes you straight to the top of the map. This makes so much sense and it’s so cool

An idea: what if the final destination is a manmade island in the middle of the ocean, at the end of this "spiral" path? Could fit in w/ the tradition vs modernity theme.

i really like this design! you could fit the the extra towns in the space that’s cut off that would be there in real world mexico (the west coast and the east of yucatan). i think currently there’s quite a lot of space given up to empty sea that could be used differently. the games don’t usually stick all that closely to real geography and i think you should do that too

i feel like an important aspect for later with the sirens is water exploration, maybe adding some kind of mystical bubble of air thats hard to see until up close around the water hinting at underwater ruins or buildings would be cool. i also think in the desert area with the volcano would do well with a mining town, maybe a rock ground and fire area near the front could be interesting

I love the region maps they do every gen and this one is very pretty and you seem to understand the spirit of it. I do have a couple points you might want to consider for your next drafts. Like others have pointed out, having optional routes and routes that connect back to previous ones in different ways is a big one for making the region fun to explore. On this draft, your region is basically a line. Black and White suffered from a linear region but was somewhat helped by the sequels. You can look to Hoenn and Sinnoh for inspiration as they had the interconnectedness down and it really brought the world together. Kanto even looped around on itself. Think of how it could be fun or interesting to start on one route but having to get around a roadblock so you would have to find another way or double back to a previous route that has new options you couldn't access before. There is a lot you can do to make the region really interesting to look at and explore. My second point is don't be afraid to take more liberties with the geography of the region. I think its best to take the feel then the hard lines so to speak. I know that's the direction you have started to take but its ok to play with it more especially to make the routes more interconnected if you can. I'm looking forward to see how this takes shape in its final form, it looks really cool so far.

How about a huge agal bloom part of the gulf to reference the similar tragic feature in the actual Gulf of Mexico, which can tie into the new forms of industrial agriculture vs. traditional farming without these massive amounts of fertilizers, with "America" (add references to the Unova region and surrounding areas) signifying the point of no return for the eradication of "traditions". Included in this could be a new water/ghost pokémon based on blooms, sorta like how Galarian Corsola was symbolic of industry bleaching the coral. It is not grass however, because it is the environment that is dying, and it is not the algae itself. Perhaps it has a similar ability to Steelworker except with grass type moves. You will find many of a few new and old aquatic grass types along with this new pokémon and perhaps some aquatic decomposers as they're the ones causing eutrophication, but finding a single Magicarp will be an arduous task, and finding the one male (so that it can't breed without Ditto) fish pokémon being the last of its kind will be even rarer. Incidentally, this can also be another way to insert the themes because these new invaders in the aquatic plant (algae) pokémon make their homes in the CO2, N, and P-filled dead-zones, while these suffering fish die of eutrophication.

Oh man, this is incredible! I love how the buildings and perspective are pretty stylized in favor of map readability! This is a pretty big ask. But I'd be curious to see what sort of box art legendaries you'd design, if you even choose to do box art legendaries!

This is so pretty Claire did a great job illustrating this! As cool as this is, if this were a real game I have a few concerns. This is pretty much a straight line that could make your theoretical game feel like a hallway simulator. Also it would be nice to have a few water routes aswell, but u might want to think of a way to differentiate them from normal boring water routes Also this is personal taste but it would be a lot cooler if the normal type would’ve been a stronger trainer like elite 4 or champion. Because the normal gym is usually an early boss and it would just be a fun take. Idk the latest they’ve ever been is the 5th gym so I hope you see this!

Love the map so much and just the rendering of the landmarks and cities. Also so hype for the world building that seems to be coming. Pokemon are important and I do like seeing the new ones but I am so curious on the actual story of what is going on in this region and the type of environment we are working with. Need those for thinking of our own ocs in this reigon

Amazing art! You are doing great! Here are some things that I think you should add to the next iteration of the map. -Add some islands for the player to explore. I think it would add some more depth to the area since it has a bunch of negative space -Add where the league and victory road is -Add in a market place in at least one area. I think this would be a nice change of pace for pokemarts since they haven’t really changed over the years and have since been combined with pokecenters. If we had a market place or some sort of farmers market it would add a nice touch of world building. Some places would have their own grown food to make potions or to make this region’s equivalent to curry or poffiins. There is also a HUGE market place in Mexico so it wouldn’t be too out of place. -Add a restaurant or hotel not just for the story, but to act as a pseudo pokémon center. The player can rest in a hotel room to relax/sleep or they can order some food that can give them certain boost in their next battle. I like mechanics that both add some sort of normalcy and add a nice reward on top. Sure adventure is good and all that, but I think it’s also fun to add romanticism on daily life. That is all for some things that I’d like to see in a Pokémon game or map

Thoughts and Ideas: 1) The company/organization that built and/or runs the subaquatic facility should use their technology to build a "theme park" or "coastal playground" route in the sea on the road leading off Mazah City. It would be self contained, but trainers are abundant and its a good place to train up for the gym; since the people of the city with their abundant resources train seriously strong pokemon. 2) For more non gym towns, places I see potential include out on the coastal side of the desert, which could lead to an interesting harsh desert route and a oasis village or a coastal desert village capitalizing on the small bay with rocks you drew on the map. Another is the Jungle cliffsides at the bottom of the map; I imagine the road approaching the fork between Ruins Town and Jungle Town forks earlier toward the beach. There would be equipment or a ferry to travel the rocky coastal cliffsides (coral reefs included?) and to a beautiful lush jungle cave with flavorful bioluminescence and strange plants and pokemon. People made their home there because the plants keep it dry and temperature controlled, and the sea isn't very rough due to a barrier of rock formations á la North Carolina. Lastly, the lonely peninsula in the upper right would be an extremely dope end game battle frontier or end game island, like an homage to the sinnoh battle frontier. the subaquatic city could use submarines that ship you out to the island. These submarines could also lead to deep underwater exploration of the bay area, or nondisclosed deep ocean territory off map. 3) If I had to addd something, I'd say broadening the landmass on the left vertical sidde would allow you to include even more space for locales and towns. I don't know what the environments would be since im unfamiliar with mexican/central american biomes, but maybe warm plains or something scenic to serve as a detour or extension of the area around Mazah City. Otherwise, I personally love the linearity of the peninsula in the beginning of the game. It makes sense with the diverse landscapes and the actual geographic thinness. Convoluting the end game more would feel exciting as progression and make logical sense game design wise. 4) The art style is, exactly what I pictured when thinking about this region more broadly in my mind. Its extremely pretty and I hope it continues to be rendered this way!!

Map looks awesome! I appreciate how you payed attention to the geographical features in relation to the gyms. I also believe you should go with the bloodline-ran gyms. It would be interesting for the protagonist to gather another understanding of tradition or mazian culture as they progress through the story. For example, if there was a grass gym it could be based in a town that supplies the entire region for their “day of the dead” festival with marigolds and their signature Pokémon would be the mazian roserade line. Another thing I’ve been thinking is this “what does it mean to be a mazian champion?” or “how do the people of mazah identify their champion?”. Does the champion uphold the traditions and ideals of mazah? Is the crowning of a new champion necessary for something a little more direct, like the prevention of something catastrophic? These questions can shape the direction of the journey. I think I would appreciate more of the sun and moon approach to legendaries where it starts of with a little galactic puff that eventually evolves into one of the version exclusive legendaries, which is influenced by whichever of the 2 teams (if you choose this route) you consistently encounter, based on your version. This will pronounce those strong ideals that these teams hold while also telling 2 different stories, similar to ruby/sapphire. As for the naming of the games it might be a little difficult without getting too direct with the underlying themes: life and death; beginning/ end; new/old; youth/age; give/take. The naming really depends on the target audience, and then you have to think about box art and how to represent those names. Can’t wait to see where this goes!
