I consider my style in the vein of European Farmhouse, English Country, cottagecore, etc as well. After giving it extensive thought, I realized its appeal is due to the fact that, as a child, I read and watched a lot of historical books and movies that were set in the English countryside. These stories were some of main forms of escape and pleasure growing up, and it’s clear that its impact still lingers within me as an adult via interior design!

That’s such a great point! I think you’re on to something. You just made me realize I’m like trying to live in a Keira Knightley movie mixed with a Beatrix Potter book 😂 It’s so interesting how what we love as children really forms us into adults. But I think you’ve definitely confirmed that this is a very authentic style for you because there’s a lot of person meaning tied to it!

Agreed! We just built a home so I incorporated what fit within our budget into the architecture for an old style vibe- diamond pane windows, arched doorways, natural wood elements, and stucco-style siding so my vintage decor wouldn't look completely out of place.

When I was younger, I was all about the trends and getting away from the "old fashioned" looks of my parents and grandparents. Now that I'm older I've learned to appreciate the classic and timeless styles that I once thought of as "outdated". I don't even like the word outdated because so many of the styles that are trending now are a blast from the past (i.e. mid-century modern). Trends come and go. I'm about decorating my home so that when I walk in the door I smile. Great videos! Blessings, Arlene

Thank you so much for making this video i have a few styles that i have loved for two to three years and I wasn't sure how to blend/mix the styles because they seemed so different (for instance Scandinavian, hyuge, and cottage core) I feel like inhave the tools to figure out exact what I like about each style and kinda come up with my own style. Such as the minamalistic, light airyness of Scandinavian, mixed with some pops of seasonal color from cottage core with specific curated peices of decor that are beautiful and functional, and an emphasis on my crochet and water color painting hobbies and the warm, cozy feeling, of sipping hot chocolate by the fire with a good book while snow is falling even when I live in a place where those warm cozy winter nights don't really happen. One thing that I think also has a huge impact is the building itself and how it works with certain interior designs. There’s some homes that can be flexible but there’s others that have a certain style that really gets to be fun to research and see if it’s possible to bring the house back to its hay day. For an example, I moved into a family owned cottage on the family farm, but it badly needed a good renovation as it was too contemporary. While this was happening, cottagecore took root, and I really liked the concept of timeless and classical looks that a renovation wasn’t needed every 10 years. The goal was to come up with not only something that was appealing to me, but was authentic to the build’s style, and to give it good character. The nice thing is if I want to change things, I have it designed that I can mix things around if I want. But I think my primary style would be farm/cottage Americana, maybe some English country. It just seems to be sensible, plus my family has been avid antique collectors for generations. Also, try using those beads as decorations to wrap around your Christmas tree!

I’ve been making lists of my favorite decor elements for 50 years. Of course, I started with magazines, and made a list of the individual items that made the room seem special to me. Now it’s social media, but when going through my old lists recently, I see that my taste has not changed. From color schemes to accessories, my taste has stayed fairly consistent all this time. I’ve been gradually working toward that ideal all these years and I love my current home!

If you break out of the "style/trend box" your decor will be timeless. I shop 2nd hand for EVERYTHING! The advantage is that the "newest" trend items (like those oversize beads) usually don't end up in thrift shops. The disadvantage of 2nd hand shopping is that it's too easy to buy a bunch of random stuff that isn't cohesive. This video gives you some great ideas about how to identify your style and therefore be able to choose what authentically appeals to you. I carry 3x5 index cards painted with my wall colors and a packet of fabric samples in a zip lock bag in my purse to help me stay on track. I also carry a retractable plastic tape measure along with a list of what I'm looking for in my phone. My list includes approximate dimensions so I don't mistakenly buy something that won't fit the intended space.

Thank you so much for sharing these insights. What a great way to analyze and discover your own personal tastes. :) Personally, I love a light and airy Swedish farmhouse decor. HOWEVER, I live in an old Spanish colonial in South America. I'm letting the architecture decide the decor because it blends better. Allowing the architecture of the home to decide the decor has let me learn to enjoy a new style of decorating I wouldn't typically lean toward. All this to say: I'm like you: I want timeless, rather than trendy. Thanks so much!

Good tips...I really love the curtains under the sink. I don't like the weird ones on lamp shades. I do use old and new alot. I've don't different versions of farmhouse. I started out French/English Farmhouse. To now a more Cottage English Farmhouse......I really love the Cottage feel. I used to do more heavy and I guess fancy and now I feel like the Cottage is warm and cozy and it actually takes me back to my childhood days and prob the original style my mom did. I also love 90s style. White homes, porches, wicker and patterns. I've also gotten to where I prefer neutrals and I had a HARD time doing my fall decore this year with the orange (my husband loves that...so I did it. I have just a little while until I can change it back to evergreens 🌲 that I love). I did do wallpaper in my entryway I've been waiting a couple decades for wallpaper to come back but I'm picky...I wanted the true English wallpaper. I found some cream that has a white snowball pattern with green leaves. It's very simple and timeless, it really gave that space personality.

I enjoy your videos because of your smart and multidisciplinary reasoning. Cognitive distortions play a significant role in what we perceive as "liking," a topic that fascinates me. It really does make sense to distinguish between liking an overall concept and liking specific elements. I was surprised when I couldn’t choose a single piece of art from my collection of hundreds to hang on my wall. The same with answering question "is there a picture on my board that I'd 100% replicate in my living room"? I still haven't found one. Personal space adds a different layer of complexity. When redecorating and upgrading, cognitive distortions weren’t a big issue for me, as I was aware of them. However, when designing my first apartment from scratch, I faced many challenges. Too much or too little exposure to trends can skew your perception. I’ve realized that it takes 3-4 years of active exposure to truly understand trends and develop taste, even as an artist with decades of experience. Designing my home over 1-2 years wasn’t enough-I was misled by fleeting trends. There’s definitely a "dream aesthetic" within each of us, waiting to be discovered and translated into a space that feels right. But when exposed to just one or two trends, which change every 1-4 years, you’re likely to lean into them and later grow tired of them as you realize what initially drew you in. Decision fatigue can also lead to buying items you think will match but don’t truly resonate with your taste, just go with the exposure bias. For example, I knew I wanted a dark interior, specifically dark green. I’ve loved dark academia since my teenage years, when it wasn't even a thing. In early 2019, when the green trend was just emerging, it was mostly art deco/jungle style, with lots of gold and velvet-neither of which appealed to me, except for the art deco lamps. Because of so little examples, I made some mistakes, like experimenting with greenery wallpapers, and I’m glad I didn’t go all-in with it in my living room. I do have one in my office, which impresses visitors but still feels like a mistake to me. I just didn't have any other ideas to convey the 'feeling'. I was also drawn to the simplicity of black metal elements in the loft style, which was at its peak then. I incorporated a lot of it in my home, but now I think I needed something different. I still use black metal and wood but in softer forms. What I didn't realize at that time, I am just a sucker for classic interiors. But without comparison, I couldn't say that out loud. At that time, "classical interiors" were mostly modern classic or completely baroque and it didn't describe my taste at all. From truly classical examples at the time, I'd go for... gothic. Seriously, I looked up inspirations from horror movies frames, it's still on my pinterest lol. In hindsight, while I did well with my apartment, I would incorporate more texture today-especially stone and wood-to balance out the varnished flat surfaces of my furniture. This realization came to me after browsing thousands of inspirations, including completely different from my personal style, like Japandi (cottage core is too chaotic for me). Also the stones available 5 years ago were not the same, marble was really popular, and it's totally not my vibe. Creating a trendy interior that lasts requires a lot of skill. But ultimately, good design will always stand the test of time, whether it corresponds with current trends or not. It took me 5 years to understand what will last. It is art to make something sophisticated, striking, but not too elegant as this would not be cozy. Not childish, not plastic, not chaotic, not naive or kitch. (nothing wrong with these, of course, if someone prefers having fun over peace).

Great advice in this video! I'm a professional illustrator, so for me, I'm very hyper aware of the things that I love and the colors that I love because I incorporate them into my work, but even I get caught up and have to check myself about trends and make sure I actually REALLY like something and not just because it's on my feed a lot. And I'm even typically in the "I hate trends" camp. My husband and I have a dream of having a farm one day also. I love antiques. Love the 1800s. I love a "working" country kitchen, rather than having a bunch of pictures of roosters everywhere. I'm also somewhat of a tomboy and completely agree with you about the frilly fabrics! It really is helpful to look at moodboard images and just take a second to break down WHY you really like something. Because really, if you just end up emulating trends or a specific labeled "look" for your house... then it's not YOUR house. You're just copying someone else's idea of what a house should look like, and eventually it won't feel like you anymore. - I would say the only time I really will buy something that's currently trendy is if it's something that I've always loved and it just happens to be a trend now. Because then it's easier to find in the stores, but even then it's circumstantial! P.S. OH NOOO NOT THE BEADSSS lol - If you celebrate Christmas and get a tree, maybe use it as a garland! (or just a generic winter garland)

I’m very much in the anti trend side of this so for me the approach is actually sort of from the other direction. That is, I’m still being influenced by trends, but in the opposite way. Like for example Bouclé fabric, I think it’s so pretty (genuinely) but the fact that it was suddenly popular and is so strongly associated with having been “trendy” kind of made me like it less. I have caught myself being drawn to it instinctively but then thinking “no it’s so trendy, thooo”. So to me, really really trendy things that I genuinely have enjoyed can sometimes ruin something I genuinely like. Not often but you know. A little bit sometimes

Farmhouse is based off traditional style, pared down for a country lifestyle or casual vibe which fits a DIY, woodsy, or down to earth person. It can be dressed up or down. That’s why it’s been such a persistent trend since the Arts and Crafts movement in 1895! And probably before. People return to comfort over and over. Homey style never left in cottages -except for the ornate Eastlake influences which are cool again- and has been revived several times (Primitives in 1980, and the “ prettier” version which came in with Gunne Sax, Laura Ashley and translated to decor in the shabby chic trend in the 80s-90s to now (Hobby Lobby, anyone?)

Could the beads be repurposed for holiday decor? You are wise beyond your years and I think you’d be an excellent interior decor coach for those of us who need help clarifying our own special style ❤

Also, another question…how can I achieve this style by making/ thrifting/ adapting what I have? Hate, hate, hate a “buy” list

I’ve been considering this same thing lately…do I like what I’m seeing a lot of because it looks nice and I see it a lot or because it’s actually something that expresses who I truly am? What will I really enjoy long term and feel comfortable with and not feel like changing? Or if I add items to the style I’m using - will it be expressing who I am more fully or will it be something I want to change with the next trend to be very something very different than what I started with and cost me a lot of money? I really want to express who I am more fully rather than have my stuff reflect the current consumer trends and not know who I am and not let anyone who comes over really know who I am either.

I love what you said about how following trends is different for influencers! I heard someone else (can’t remember who sorry) mention the same thing and explain that you can’t out-consume an influencer because when they spend and update things they can profit, but when the rest of us spend and update things we get stressed and broke 😭 Also thank you for telling us about your duck, that’s so cute 🥺 Unfortunately for me my issue is that I still love thomas the tank engine blue 💀

I love your videos! And it's so easy to see that your personal colour palette is winter 😅 Probably bright winter. It's amazing how great you look wearing those colours! Keep going, you are doing great! ❤ Sorry for my english, it's not my language.

First, your English is perfect! Thank you for confirming that because I was just guessing but I wasn’t sure if I was dark winter or dark autumn. So I started wearing a lot of black to be safe. I didn’t realize how much your shirt color can make a difference until I started filming videos! What’s the difference between dark winter and bright winter?

Your 60 ft on beads would make a great garland for holidays.

You could use the beads on a Christmas tree or with garland

I wouldn’t say I don’t like frilly fabric, I don’t like fabric used in places where the fabric will get nasty really quickly. I do like the premise of your video. My style is things that mean something to us - like the side table that belonged to my grandparents and has a cigarette burn that we left visible in the refinishing and a little metal farm stool that belonged to my other grandparents.

What would your tips be for someone who is about to build a house but conflicted on what style to go with? I love natural materials like wood and stone but also moody style as well so I’m not sure what to do in like a kitchen for instance 😅❤
@rebeccasplace4 ай бұрын
@@camilleallen8207 I would definitely follow your love for natural materials. I really don’t think you can go wrong with wood, marble, stone etc. They are versatile and timeless materials and you can lean into moodiness with paint color and smaller pieces that are easily reversible in case you find yourself changing your mind. For your kitchen, I like the idea of choosing wood cabinets with a neutral undertone because it makes for a really flexible base that can move with you as you get closer to finding your authentic style. Let me know if you have any other questions!

That’s what I was leaning towards so thank you! ☺️

I had an interior design youtuber roasting orange-y wood tones and my place has lots of danish teak so I already got to do that test. 100% was like idc what they say hahah. I also can't quite find an interior like mine out there so I know that while I am inspired by others I am true to myself.

13:35 what if you painted it red and put it on a Christmas tree? Resell it as "cranberry red wooden garland"
@sandyheredia30273 ай бұрын
You can put objects you like in between and decorate your tree.

Furniture manufacturers, appliance manufacturers, paint companies, all these were doing this long before social media. Back then new things came out at a slower pace but every decade home goods and colors changed. Today it is sped up to a ridiculous pace by social media. I tell people to do what you love and be satisfied with what you have. Contentment is not having what you want, but rather wanting what you have. It is fun to get new things once in a while, but dont go overboard.

I was sure I would love matcha. I got a big bag of it and even a little bamboo whisk. I could not even drink it. It's not like green tea, it's like something out of a lawnmower. I'm sure it's an acquired taste but I don't want to acquire it. I still have the bamboo whisk, I never used it. Make sure you like something before buying it.

Hi 😊 The green is Vintage Vogue by BM and I’m not sure about the off white- just the basic apartment complex color.
