I used to be a commercial interior designer specializing in hotels and restaurants. I am so used to designing my tables and upholstered pieces and having them made - especially from the hotel work, I would just purchase one extra for myself. My sofa is now 24 years old and I still love it! It works in traditional and in contemporary interiors and currently I am in my English Art Deco period. I will be moving into an apartment in 2 years time, and so am thinking of doing Parisian grand apartment. I like spaces to show the personality of the owner, not what is trendy!

Interesting! When my ex was a teenager in the 1970s he worked at his family's hotel. I still use one of that hotel's wooden coffee tables and it's the best-made piece of furniture I've ever seen. (50 years old!) I wonder if they had it custom-made.
@JohanneMatthew
@JohanneMatthew Ай бұрын
@@PJPerdue1293 Yes it would be, especially if it was for the casegoods in the hotel rooms. Because of the economies of scale, designers give a distinct look to the hotel rooms. This has changed a lot in the last 10 years with technology. Flat Screen televisions are wall mounted and do not take up space on dressers. Dressers are gone (except at resorts (if you are staying a week or two, you need somewhere to put your clothes). Desks are still needed, easy chairs not so much. I remember doing a lounge at a hotel and adding an extra leather wrapped rattan chair to the order for me. I had that chair for 25 years and gave it to my daughter for the house which she rented with 3 other friends in second year university. I bet it is still in the house. As well, on the resorts, the antique contractor would give me something as a "thank-you" for the order - that is how I received my shield back Gibbard of Napanee dining chairs from the 1930's. I love them!

I want to show my personality, too. However, to be honest, for the average person (not wealthy, not a designer) choices are often limited by the trends that have trickled down. I wanted some yellows, spring greens, pink - feminine - and I can't tell you how difficult and frustrating it is to find; everything is grays, neutrals, terracotta.

@@bananarama480 Minimalism doesn’t have to mean soulless though-that's just the Instagram aesthetic. I have my own artwork, family photos, a map of my travels on my walls. I genuinely find the type of maximalist environments pictured that you described as being too much, too overstimulating and uncomfortable as the most comfortable. It's the level of busyness I need to feel truly relaxed and cosy, like I'd want to at home. I find it so interesting that others find it hard to relax or feel comfortable in these type of spaces. Obviously, everyone should create a home at whatever level of minimalism/maximalism is comfy for them.

Definitely maximalist / dark academia but everything curated and good flow of space (nothing squeezed in anywhere). Been here 2 years now and loving it every single day. Visitors are in awe at its cosyness, warmth, interest and character. Definitely not cluttered just super interesting.

2:38 as someone who has spent a lot of time in a psychiatric hospital, they're not minimalist places; just posters alone, thousands of them with their own competing design languages and different fonts where most of them have obvious or pointless information so they can be treated as just wallpaper. Many different types of chair because they have to cater to everyone's preferences, some like hard chairs, some like soft chairs, some like wrap around, some like it open. If you are talking about padded rooms, that's something I assume a lot of people would want in their home - my attic may be effectively a padded room, it's very comfy and very cosy

11:18 growing up in the late 90s early 2000s my parents had a big ass moopy green (real) leather sectional. It was heaven. Multiple people could lay lengthwise, it was indestructible to children and our black lab, the armrests were so big and soft you never needed a pillow, excellent lumbar support, in the summer it stayed cool and comfortable... All in all it was the supreme couch. If someone out there could make something like that trendy then I would be in their debt. If not, then bring back those couches that were actually just pillow lined pits in the middle of the living room floor. The puff puff pass era knew a thing or two about communal comfort.

Every trend that rolls around (and back around, and back around again) I learn a new thing about what I like in my space, even if it's not that trend! I learned from the mid-century modern and scandi vibes that I love natural wood tones, I learned from maximalism that I like an elegant and ornate frame, I learned from the shabby chic times that I like finding lived-in treasures instead of seeking out a very specific type/brand. I'm cool when trends come and go because I feel like I learn a bit more about my personal taste and what makes me happy!

They put it in everything new concerning building , almost in all new buildings on exterior walls and balcony curtains . Architects and decorators make designs with this in interior spaces , either to separate rooms , as decorative on the wall , in bathrooms , e.t.c . Sometimes I feel my eyes divided into thin pieces of wood , this feeling coming from looking to all of these .

It’s funny, I love Nick and I just love to learn how to decorate and mostly due to financial constraints I’ve ridden out every trend since 2002. I bought high quality furniture, what little I could afford, then just took care of it. Mostly light wood, earth tones, simple uncluttered lines, green corduroy sofas, Southwestern accents. White kitchen. Just my own personal preferences. Totally uncool for 20 years as I watched various trends come and go but I love my home. And now it’s kind of cool again my grown kids tell me, so that’s funny. Who knew that’s how trends would work?! Thanks for great videos, Nick! You make decorating and design fun!

My favorite and forever-timeless sofas: a neutral cloud sectional (soft and used, not boxy) or a classic and neutral Spanish-country-feel slip cover sofa (just think Nancy Meyers). Dress these sofas up with some warm and natural-toned cushions, and there you will have comfort and style for life.

As a minimalist, I agree that there is nothing wrong with maximalism. It can look really cool. It’s not for me though, and probably not for most people who have no defense for how much impressions their brains take in. Living in a maximalist home would be a full time job processing all the impressions for me.

Nick, I’d love to know more about how you feel about discussing these microtrends from a sustainability/resource conscience point of view? For example, is it ethical to promote furniture/decor trends that cycle so quickly? How should people responsibly source and discard of furniture that they’re cycling through their space, whose responsibility is it to influence/de-influence such an unsustainable industry practice of new annual trends, how to approach a timeless style and avoid trends etc. I’d love to see a video covering these types of topics.

15:03 If the woods slats end at a logical spot in conjunction with furniture, architecture or threshold, i think it can totally work -- especially if any of the ratios apply. (E.g., Rule of Thirds, Fibonacci, Golden Ratio, etc.) Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to apply these properly.
