Designing the 3D-Printed Lightsaber!

In a new series discussing the art of 3D printing, we're joined by Jacky "Valcrow" Wan, a 3D modeler who has made some of the most amazing prints we've seen. Jacky was the one who designed the 14-piece 3D-printed lightsaber, and shares with us his design process and tips for FDM printing.

I just finished painting that four part saber! I used simple spray-cans and dry brush -style but it turned out pretty well! Now it is all ready for the movie :) It was actually my first propper print with my printer (Prenta Duo). Nice to see the man who designed it!

Loved the video and the design, great job. Another good thing about do in separate pieces is that someone like me that has "little" build space don't have to worry about not having enough space to print it. I'm printing it tonight!!!

What would be very cool would be if in the light saber you leave a space through the center to put an actual laser in, and on the edges but some really thin mirrored rods that aren't too obvious, and on the end putting a double-sided mirror on the end. This would reflect the laser back, making it a stronger visual laser, and also stopping the laser, making it look like an actual light saber light.

The 3 prong connector looks very similar to a tri lug adapter that is used with some firearms.

Nice video, i'm a professional 3d artist and plan to 3d print a character i'm working on and i am thinking of using sandstone because i can also use the texture maps to color him directly without having the need to texture him via air brushing, plus i won't need to add supports to it.

This is one of my favourite 3d printed objects. I printed one which turned out amazing, except the "switch" that holds the locking pin in place. I think I tried about 15 times and I keep getting a functional part but it just never looks quite right.

I would agree for VFX. movies etc. Having a degree in animation and now working in the 3d printing industry. There are a lot of factors you have to think about that a CG won't have. Engineering folks in many ways will have an easier adaption then artists in the 3d printing world.

Really cool model, I don't like the striated patterns that result from 3d printing. Is there a way to reliable smooth a model out? Or would it require cold casting to actually get the ideal material and consistency that you would need for a hard metallic object like a lightsaber?

UV Resin printers have less of a problem with that issue. I don't have an extruder printer, however, if you are having an issue with the striated printing, it *could* be something as simple as adjusting your print settings.

I love their work, but yeah, their white balance is regularly off. On auto, cameras often cycle between warm and cold settings (e.g. their video on Tim Gore's paint). The inconsistent balances likely stem from using multiple cameras. They might also colour grade all of the clips using the same white correction, which leads to some shots looking off.

It's not screen-accurate. Just turn the thing, on a metal lathe, from aluminum stock. Sean sucks.
