Desire - Haitoku no Rasen. Look it up, worth every second if you play it to the end. And keep the OST playing, it's marvellous.

um ... what I could find out about that game suggests that it's pr0n or at least pretty edgy ... but I agree, the music (or at least this track) is amazing

this Yamaha YM2203 model, was to be mounted in the Atari ST. Unfortunately, personal reasons meant that the Atari ST had the much weaker YM2149...Shame...

Does the OPN chip allow operator splitting like with "special channel 3 mode" on MD/OPN2? It sounds like it since they use echo on a single channel at 2:51 here. Unless that's chorus using the DT effects. Edit: Seems it does from the documentation.

You are clearly more experienced with FM chips than me, but I daresay they do not have the capability of delay as we are familiar with it today. And I am not able to make out the delay-like recursion effect at 2:51. As far as I know, sound designers cleverly used multiple channels to simulate effects, even sharing load on single channels for both basslines, melodies and percussion, akin to what one may do with the Gameboy DMG-CPU. And I believe this boils down to physical engineering restrictions. But I could be mistaken about this. Do share your thoughts on this.

@@___xyz___ the OPN series all have a special extended addressing mode on FM Channel 3 which allows you to individually trigger/control the pitch on each operator. So you could split FM3 into up to all 4 of its constituent operators and use all of them as individual voices, though they'd all be carrier-only except for Operator 1, which can self-modulate. Hope that helps! This track actually does make use of the FM3 extension feature to get two voices in the chorus near the end.

It's very noticeable in 3:17

@@RoddyDev Yeah I've since had a look at some instruments by ripping them via hoot player and it does have that mode, a 4-op instrument is split up in two and half of its notes delayed (placed later in the tracker or whatever tool was used) to simulate echo. You can also have 4 separate 1-op instruments if such an algorithm is used and you can detune one ore more operators for chorus or dissonance.

Anyone know where I can download VGM files of this soundtrack? I can only find the FM-Towns version which I don't think sounds quite as good somehow.
