One important point that comes to light in this video is the way that the meanings of words evolve over time. The meanings of words often evolve away from their root meanings. For example, the English word 'goodbye' originally meant 'God be with you'. However, today if someone uses that word, they are not expressing the concept of God being with a person at all. The word has evolved away from its root meaning, and today it is just a friendly way of saying farewell to someone. The English language has existed for about 1000 years, and that has given plenty of time for the meanings of many words to evolve away from their root meanings. And the same is true of the biblical languages. For example, the Greek language had existed for well over 1000 years when the New Testament was written. So at that time the meanings of many words no longer corresponded to their root meanings. Time and time again, you will hear a pastor on a Sunday going to the root meaning of a Greek word for insight into how to interpret it in a certain Bible passage. But this is a very flawed technique that should be abandoned. The only time it is a sound technique is when the Greek word is known to have originated recently, when there hasn't been time for its meaning to evolve away from its root meaning.

Leon Morris, mentioned at 2:16, in his book "The Atonement" he states, "In the New Testament there is never any hint of a recipient of the ransom. In other words, we must understand redemption as a useful metaphor which enables us to see some aspects of Christ's great saving work…" (page 129). The metaphors of ransom and redemption which he cast aside in his first book are now to be the primary understanding with respect to Christ! Greek word used here in Romans 5:11 is καταλλαγή. Definition: pr. an exchange; reconciliation, restoration to favor, Rom. 5:11; 11:15; 2 Cor. 5:18, 19*

The Bauer-Danker-Arndt-Gingrich Greek-English lexicon, considered to be the best, describes katallage in the following way: 'reestablishment of an interrupted or broken relationship' And it translates it as: 'reconciliation' This word does mean reconciliation. It means something more precise than 'atonement'. One problem with using the KJV is that the English language has evolved a lot in the last 400 years, meaning that many words don't mean the same thing now as they did back then.

Max Aplin makes sense to me. I can agree with that; that English did evolve over 400 years. And yeah I can agree with your dictionary usage. But either way I still hold to Christ’s substitutionary atonement as a biblical doctrine, even if it primarily uses reconciliation as the right word from the Koine Greek.

@@cork8843 Yes, English has evolved a lot. And failing to understand this sometimes leads to mistakes in interpretation. For example, in Luke 12:22 the KJV reads: ‘Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.’ I think this was probably a good translation 400 years ago. Back then, ‘take thought for’ apparently meant what we would refer to as ‘worry about’. The Greek of this passage certainly means: ‘Do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear.’ However, in modern English not taking thought for something most naturally suggests not thinking about that thing at all. So today the KJV text of this verse can easily be misunderstood. I have heard well-meaning Christians quote the KJV text of this verse and say that believers should not even think about what they are to eat or wear. This, however, is not what the Greek text is saying. Nor does it seem to have been what the KJV translators had in mind when they made their translation. You are certainly right about Christ's death being substitutionary. I wouldn't say that the NT portrays the atonement PRIMARILY as reconciliation. But it is one of several important images that are used.

From the first tree Adam had time to eat the fruit, but from the second he did not have time, because God put animal skins on it, gave it animal food, and drove it out of Paradise. The New Testament continues this interesting story. How Adam reached the tree of life and took off the skins of the animal, turning into a MAN.

There is still 'atonement' but it's different, due to the death and resurrection of Christ, hence why there is a New Covenant. The question does highlight an issue with using translations but we can't all read ancient Greek or Hebrew. There's no Hewbrew word called atonement as it's an English translation of Hebrew words.

Hi, I have one question. The resurrection of Dionysus, Osiris, Attis, & other pre-Jesus religious figures are now considered hoaxes. Do you have any evidence (not just books, opinions of historians / scholars, scripture, or folks having dreams) to prove hoaxer Christian writers didn't create the Jesus resurrection hoax by making up fake backdated eyewitnesses & testimonials as well as the fake story that apostles were willing to die after witnessing a so-called risen Jesus?

@@AtamMardes I'm not sure what evidence you would accept as fact. Historical evidence are eyewitnesses and writings about such people to prove anyone even existed. To that fact there is a movement to say even the holocaust didn't happen even though there are survivors of it who attest to it. The Bible is part history book listing real people who lived and were eyewitnesses to the death, Resurrection and reappearance of Christ afterwards. But if you don't trust it to be at least historically accurate (even though there's more accurate manuscripts to prove that Jesus existed than Napoleon) then I'm not sure what evidence you will believe. To Atonement: It's a vibration and frequency, like an adjusting or adjustment - For Jesus made an atonement for our sins, People have made a gravies error that error would be we are a human race of perpetual children. Being children - these do not know what they do as Jesus mentions as well as "little children" and John mentions as well! Ecclesiasticus 45:13 KJV Before him there were none such, neither did ever any stranger put them on, but only his "children and his children's children perpetually". "his children and his children's children perpetually." This is a universal paradigm it can go in reverse as well, there are many ways to express an ideal we have in our mind. Perpetually children that will have children that will have children. What is a good reason for Jesus to die on the cross, for we are only children - we do not know what we do and naturally are forgiven through Jesus's Resurrection that is the adjustment on the spiritual side of frequency and vibration The atonement - is the adjustment which is forgiveness which is love above and beyond the 5 senses - unconditional- has a unique frequency and vibration all of it's own.

But under grace, in the new covenant, Christ made atonement for the whole world, sacrificing Himself. Yet, only those appropriating His blood by faith are redeemed, and purchased to be only His. There is a general atonement in Christ, because He became propitiation for the whole world, and yet there is a particular redemption for only His sheep at the Last Day. All are not saved, unless their hope is only in the work/cross of Christ, and their faith is in Christ alone, called 'the salvation of God' (Luke 2:30, Ps.149:4). Any questions?

Christs atonement was once for all sin, for all time and for the whole world which will last forever. Thus, no more sacrifice for atonement required as the full price is paid for all men to fix that which was broken. Thus All men have been (potentially) redeemed from sin (saved from sin), but only those who believe in what Jesus has done will receive eternal life. This is one of mysteries of the gospel of the forgiveness of sins preached by apostle Paul, were as some denominations preach limited atonement.
