Not really sure why you didn't compare a 970 vs the 970M, or even a 960 considering behind the 760 its the most used desktop card there is right now. Of course a 1080 would blow a 9 series lower model laptop card out of the water. Do we get a comparison between a Ferrari and a Ford Focus too? Also would have liked a comparison between the 1080 (or 960) and a desktop using that card to see the real power loss and help the large number of people deciding between desktop and laptop make a decision. Personally I run a desktop along side a laptop with a mediocre graphics card, if I didn't already have my setup I would have been a prime candidate for such a comparison as would many of my friends.

The older method revolves around chucking the wifi card, as most internal wifi cards in a laptop utilize PCIe standards, but they don't have as many pins. you can achieve transfer speeds of about 13 GB/s through this method, which is more then enough to run most cheaper graphics cards provided that you use an external monitor. The method that works best is finding a older laptop that utilizes MXM standards for it's dGPU then you can achieve regular transfer speeds and will not be bottlenecked around the PCIe ports. The second method is ALOT harder to do, and may require you to make a custom standard pcie slot to MXM depending on if the laptop utilizes proprietary methods.

Personally I use my full size ATX rig for gaming and I agree it's kinda really expensive. But it's one of the few early options on the market, products like this take a fair bit of time and effort to design, prototype, debug and then finally test more until it finally gets to market. I also expect there will be a relatively small segment of users that is interested in that, all this combined with the early adoption unfortunetely will lead to high prices like this unit has. Whether the price is "too high for them to sell enough" from a corporate profit point of view remains to be seen. I do fully expect that especially as other companies start making similar products that aren't using proprietary stuff the prices will drop. The biggest thing about this unit in my opinion is that it's the first that I'm aware of that isn't for some specific machine, but rather relies on a feature available currently in the newer more expensive laptops but in the future is hopefully a bit more standard. So you're not tied to a few laptop models, one specific GPU holder and a very restricitive GPU set that fits in there.

I do not have something as fancy as this however there was a very cheap alternative that did the same thing it plugged into the PCI port on the back of the laptop. But one of the biggest problems is compensating for heat. From everything I saw that the only reason mine stopped working is because the port actually got fried from the Heat

yes only slightly better maybe like 5% better but if ur going to buy a laptop for gaming i would suggest a 4gb 960m as a minimum, you can go for the newer 10 series laptop gpus but they are quite pricey. (i also have a 940m in my laptop and its fucking awful)

The problem with eGPU’s, is that these will eat your cpu. This is due to the entailment of the fact that the CPU will be doing both the work of itself. As well as the graphical work. And not only this, just the case for the eGPU gets up to $400. And this is prior to the purchase of a graphics card, so this means you can get a real PC that is cheaper than this, and have it do the same job. Sorry to burst someone’s bubble if you were pondering whether you wanted to buy it or not… but it’s not worth it.

In boot camp on a MBP if you have a discrete graphics card that is the only one windows will use. My 2013 rMBP has a 650M and I keep the dGPU switched on with gfxCardStatus because I'm always doing video stuff. My fear is whether I can use Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 with the type C Enclosures. Apple and others have said yes, I don't care if its slower or not usable for gaming but I'd love to be able to have a way to realistically render on a stronger GPU in programs like AE or Resolve where you can assign GPU's to specific tasks like Interface, Video rendering, effects rendering, etc. I tried that on a rMBP before Thunderbolt 3 was out using dual GTX 680M's and it was a blast, just set the Interface to the MacBook's dGPU which was the 650M or 750M and all the heavy lifting was done by the GTX 680's IN MAC OS X....but other than that I would have to use windows for other stuff.....the GTX 580, 680 and I believe 780 and a lot in between are supported, Idk how it would play with the 9 series but I know the 10xx series isn't supported.

they are headded in the right direction but what i really want is one of these to hook up 2 giant gpus WITH a few extra m.2 slots for a full desktop pc. get those heavy-loud-and waaaay hot graphics cards off my main motherboard and from adding tons of extea heat in the main case. really hope asus does this soon. maybe even add extra ps2 support and a few xxtra old school pci slots just to make sure newer rigs stay as backwards compatible as possible

The gamepad gimmick was designed with a dual screen/interface gimmick in mind. The fact that the system was portable and power efficient enough to run off any outlet was an accidental boon to the system. The fact that not every game even supported gamepad-screen-only gameplay is proof enough of that.

Hi Thanks for the video. So can you attach an external monitor to the video card display ports and use the external monitor? The reason I ask is that I have an Acer Aspire R13 that has a TB3 port and I have contacted Razer if I could use the Core on my laptop. Their answers are pretty vague. Their response to my question about using the Core as an docking station: "With regards to using the Razer Core as a docking station, while it might be looking like a great idea, it is not quite there yet. There's no display output port on the Core itself (HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA) and you would definitely need to get a Graphics card that supports these output ports. " The last line is extremely baffling since all video graphics cards have display output ports. Am I right???

looks to me that by the time you add the cost of the Razer box and a new GPU card, it would be more economical to simply buy a new laptop with faster everything. My PC is 4 years old with a GTX1060 and runs VR apps just fine. So I won't be interested. I would like to see you make a video on swapping discreet GPU modules in a laptop. I read in an article that they are actually slotted in - not soldered. And as long as the newer GPU is in the same class, there are no BIOS worries.

I'm guessing you only have a desktop? This is not for LANs only.. It means that you have a laptop/ultrabook you can bring with you on the go, with plenty of battery life and then be able to use the exact same device for gaming later, simply by plugging in one cable. As mentioned in the video, not everyone wants 2 machines and some dont want a fixed desktop machine.. This would be a good compromise - depending on the cost!

No it won't. When you say 'usb-c', you're only referring to the shape of the connector. The other side of the coin is what's the interface built into that. A usb-c connector can be paired usb 2.0 only interface, usb 3.0, or as of now, thunderbolt. The usb type a or c determines the shape. The usb 2, 3 or thunderbolt determines the bandwidth, power delivery etc.
