A lot of people don't understand that the thin-and-light gaming laptop segment of audience are different than those who are seeking for pure performance. They're well aware that there can only be so much wattage for the GPU in that chassis, and they're well aware that the biggest chunk of what they paid here are portability while still being so capable. Comparing thin and light gaming laptops with pure performance gaming laptop will never be fair & can never be called a scam.

Thanks, yes!! The only thing where I get the remarks for, is that the g14 was always a pure gaming machine, but pretty light for its class . They had the flow x13 for the thinner / lighter class. So this 2024 version makes the g14 a more expensive thin and light (but an awesome one!). For everyone waiting for a refresh of their beloved gaming series, it's a negative. I couldn't be happier with this design though.

Which makes it by far the most affordable laptop with a good GPU. On the downside, it is a heavy beast and the battery-efficiency is nothing compared to a Macbook (4 hours of max usage). But considering the price/performance it stands way above the competition... You also have a free SSD slot so you can keep the original 512GB and just drop in a 2TB without having to think about it; which makes it so nice

I believe you guys mentioned in the video that the screen is updating 960 times every second, when it's actually 480, since the refresh rate is 120Hz. It's the Asus Rog Zephyrus G16 with its 240Hz display that technically updates 960 times every second.
@Hathos9
@Hathos9 9 ай бұрын
Asus' documentation, stream, and Notebookcheck's measurements say 960hz. It was only the one dude in the LTT video that said 480hz. That said, I can't say which is right.
@jorismak
@jorismak 9 ай бұрын
The brightness calibration is 960hz. That's the PWM that's detected by notebookcheck and others. It basically means every oled pixel is 're-pulsing' at 960hz. Note that this is completely unrelated to 'screen refresh '. Dropping brightness also drops the PWM by the way, so this 960hz is only true at 60% brightness or more. You get a popup when lowering it below that. Armoury Crate also has a 'software brightness ' slider, when you can limit the brightness while keeping the panel at full brightness / refresh.

I bought through a reputable boutique in the US and I had them repaste it. That way my laptop and screen has been tested for function. I've had zero issues with it (well the Asus keycaps are absolute instant scratch off shit. I took too long calling Asus to get a replacement keyboard.) Considering when I did this it was really impressive that I basically got normal price and service from a small operation, during pandemic pandemonium. Although to my way of thinking, the 1660 Ti probably counted as $300 of the price, but that was still up to $100 less than others were paying for that level of performance whether in or out of a laptop. Are there even 3-5 year warranty laptops instead of 1 year ****?

Have you tried partnering with another repair place who can service them faster or may be able to ship or turn them over better, even if it's paid ala carte? There was a time I was one of two Apple repair people in the whole state I live in (in the 2010s) which is as large as Germany and I used to be expected to beat the genius bar or any shop that mailed stuff to a central hub because a lot of Apple branded repair places would just drive them over to us. We did PCs too obviously. We'd repair them quickly enough and had an official parts supply chain that the other shop could get them back and circumvent their own hubs/mail outs. I used to know so many model specific fixes for Toshibas, Asus and HP because they let us at least try to escalate which led to us being able to always escalate. It might never actually be cheaper than just writing them off honestly cause you'd either being paying out of pocket for this or passing that expense on to the client, but it can be done, it is done every day all over the world even internationally. and it just makes you look really competent and tuned into the consumer electronics beat.

Do you experience any overheating? What is the CPU temperature in working mode?
@azenyr
@azenyr 2 ай бұрын
@MojeidaNeMoje421 its a high performance laptop. If you want good temperatures buy a desktop. Mine has the Ryzen 9 and when pushing it the temps go to 90-92 but never above it. Thats the max. While heavy gaming it stays at around 85 at the cpu, 80 at the gpu. I have custom fan curves and changed them to have less noise. I can push the fans more and have better temps. However, 80-90C on a powerful gaming laptop this thin is actually amazing. It never overheats, never thermal throttles. While doing light office tasks in balanced mode the cpu hovers around 50C and its very quiet. On battery the fans almost never turn on.

Yes, AMD needs to have a way to allow more RAM for the dGPU. With Macs now having unified memory and 36GB of RAM on the M3 Pro (similar pricing), nearly all that RAM can be utilised for GPU-intensive workflows. People complain about the base MB Air's 8GB of RAM, yet this issue of the 4070 having only 8GB is far more relevant as it is in a machine targeted for GPU-intensive workflows.

I will mention this. I have an older G14 and it has keyboard chatter, where when typing, some of the keys will register two presses a few ms apart. This makes typing an awful experience, and I've heard of people having this issue on other Asus laptops as well, and it's possible they still haven't sorted this issue out. There's also no consistency to the issue. It happens to any key, and it only seems to happen when typing because I can't get it to happen by mashing a key with a key tester open. It almost seems like a bug in the firmware. External keyboards don't have any issues.

I work in IT service, and the laptops with the most problems that come back, are always Asus and HP. Also the stupidest product from them is a laptop Zephyrus for creators that a client paid about 2.5k dollars and after reinstalling everything, drivers are still not working properly, ex: trackpad sometimes dosent work, other times it does, display issues and wifi issues, and its not a faulty board this time.

Since you probably don't have 12gb on board , you are now not running dual channel anymore , are you? You sure performance didn't tank? Of you come from 8gb I might get it, although putting in 8gb of a good match will probably give you more than putting in 16gb. 16gb of ram still (more than) enough these days.

I have a G14 from last year and after swapping the MediaTek card by an Intel AX210 I was not able to connect my AirPods and DualSense at the same time anymore. I had no problems with the MediaTek and only swapped because of recommendations like this.

The Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14" OLED is a much more compelling option tbh, particularly to those outside the US

That has two SSD slots, but you can only get 32 GB of RAM with the Ryzen 7 model; for reasons beyond my understanding and all logic, the Ryzen 9 model is limited to 16 GB. 🤦‍♂️

For gaming it's for sure a good competitor. Comparable specs for less. The oled misses gsync but that's about it. I didn't go for one because the size/speakers/weight. I was looking for an Ultrabook which can occasionally game. If you are looking for gaming first , the legion is better. BUT... I'd also say if you are looking for just gaming , looking at 15/15 inch will get you more I guess.
@HelloBrother22
@HelloBrother22 9 ай бұрын
@@jorismak I mean, it's portable enough (1.7kgs isn't that much more weight, vs the g14). As for the speakers, I hear they're average but I'll mostly be using headphones anyway. The 14.5" OLED though seems like a good sweetspot for size, and every reviewer I've seen is singing praises about it

@@HelloBrother22 It's a very good machine, for sure. But the 1.5kg on this g14 was already on the upper limit for weight for me. It depends where you come from. Do you need a gaming machine that is portable, the Legion is very good. Do you want an ultrabook that has a bit of GPU power, this is the one.

The funny thing is, I had a Framework Laptop 16 with the MediaTek 7922, and it was fine. I had a Legion with the 7921, and it was horrible. It seems the Wi-Fi 6E and later cards are much better in that regard. If my Framework had any trouble, that Wi-Fi card would absolutely have been replaced.

I'll never get another asus g14 zephirus after my last one. Sure it was 2 gens old; but it overheated itself constantly until you turned turbo off. Squirrel fan cage fans went out within 8months. I sent it back for repairs 2x. They didn't fix the fan that rattled and said the temps were normal... 105c is not normal to me... i ended up having to replace my own fan and unlocking a hidden turbo setting to turn it off to keep temps under 98c. Even that is painful on that alloy frame.

@@tschorsch I'm confused as to what you are responding to. Am I excusing bad behaviour or bringing up the fact that Apple doesn't care if their products work with anything else? Like I said, to be fair you need to also look at the airpods' flaws and not just the windows laptop. All the ear buds I've used from cheap to super expensive don't have massive latency issues and if they did, all I needed to do was enable the low latency mode. Apple has a low latency feature which they only care about implementing within their own ecosystem.

I'm not getting another laptop until the graphics cards start coming with more RAM. I don't care how compelling they are otherwise. The only thing that would make me change my mind on that is if DDR6 suddenly became available and cheaply. AI is the future, and that means that massive amounts of high-bandwidth memory is also the future. Anything else is a paperweight to the past.

Considering the wife's Asus is suffering from major driver abandonment issues (it's got one of the trackpad screens... which no-longer has a functional driver, and the wifi card that killed itself but occasionally splutters back into life before stopping again) so I'm going to stick to avoiding them again.

Watching the screen on the Asus wobble from just being slid across the desk, versus the Macbook's unflinching hinge makes me wonder what build quality parity he is referring to. And that deck flex as he presses on the palm rests whereas the Macbook shows no signs of compression. Look the Asus does have great build quality but until one PC manufacturer churns out a machine that is as solidly assembled as a Macbook, this is laugable.
