An old two-stroke expert/tuner said once that the sound of TZ750s revving out on a long straigth was the most beautiful sound he knew of!:)

I had a ported and carb'd up '72 Kawasaki H2 750 when I was in H.S. that I used to occasionally pull the silencers and drive it around my old hometown...my GF used to say she'd count the curves from the sound as I approached and one day we figured out she was hearing me from over a mile away...they were LOUD.

Good God that thing sounds like the end of the world. Can only imagine how that ungodly beast delivers power, I don't imagine I'd live long with one of those...

The "Flying Pig Farmer" won the Daytona 200 in 1979 and 1981 as a privateer racing against factory teams. Dale Singleton was the David who twice slayed the factory racing team Goliaths by winning the prestigious Daytona 200 in 1979 and 1981 on privateer Yamahas. He also won the AMA Road Racing Championship in 1981.

The great Kenny Roberts famously said "they don't pay me enough to ride this" - The TZ-750 power output was waaaay ahead of the frame and tire tech at the time. Yamaha shoehorned that engine into a flatracker frame to compete with HD XR-750s -

That is the Engine that was in Kenny Roberts Bike at INDY in 75, not a TZ750 like everyone says. The first TZ700's were basically 2 TZ350's integrated. It was embarrassing enough for H-D to have this Bike shoot past Keener and Springsteen at the Finish line when it was probably 75+ yds behind the Harleys. It was a Handful for even Kenny's skill to make it work on the mile track. He was clipping hay bales in the process. The last lap of the Indy mile the Bike finally hooks up and Roberts rockets down the front straight and passes both Factory H-D Riders at the finish line; then proceeds to do a celebration wheelie down the back straight. probably one of the most memorable AMA DT Mile Nationals in History ...

Actually you are not correct...Ago did indeed win the '74 Daytona 200 on a 700cc (694cc to be accurate) TZ750 but the factory bikes starting in '75 (some of the early '75's were still 694cc but only the early ones and you can be sure Kenny Roberts got the 747cc engines) had the big bore kit integrated so were 750cc scooters...Kenny's Flat Track TZ750 that he used to win the Indy mile in '75 was a 750cc (747cc to be accurate) engine (a former 2 class AMA Expert License holder who turned some practice laps on a TZ250 in '75 at Daytona and I got to have a conversation with Kenny Roberts about "steering with the rear tire" on pavement like the top motocross riders of the day were starting to do on dirt...and I was also starting to use in my motocross racing).

So how come when Steven Wright obtained the Bike and had it in the AMA HOF it was a 700 (694cc) Engine...

steve matz Sorry I don't have any information regarding what you referenced...all I know is the B's came out in '75 and were 750's, so I couldn't imagine Kenny Roberts using an older version...but I'd certainly like to see any sources you have on the subject...later dude...btw I turned some practice laps on a TZ250 in '75 at Daytona and had a brief discussion with Kenny about "steering with the rear tire" on pavement like the elite motocross riders of the day were doing on dirt and which I was just starting to scratch the surface myself...he was a very cool dude and sharp as a tack, not to mention other worldly good on 2 wheels.

Well I was at Indy in 75 and it wouldn't have made any difference if it was TZ700 or 750; the HD Team and OB knew they were in the Crapper when Kenny finally got it to hook up out of the 3rd corner and flew by Jay and Corky at the S/F line. Since compression releases weren't allowed by AMA then, it had no engine braking in the corners. If there hadn't been hay bales to bounce off of Kenny would have hit the fence for sure. When he came into the pits during practice and heat race he had straw all over the RS of the Engine. Don't get me wrong, probably just a handfull of guys in the World that could of rode that Bike to it's potential, but that Bike scared him, you could see it on his face. Carruthers had put a kill switch to kill cylinder 3 so it would get less wheel spin off the corner but it still overpowered the track. Hell when we were riding TD2A's B's in the early 70's with Sonicweld frames; we would be going sideways down the straights and that was only 44hp so you can imagine with almost 3 times that much what a handful that bike was. The last time I looked at the HP of a TZ250 which has been a number of years ago. They were liquid cooled L -Twin and the HP was something like 94hp. That is insane for a 250 twin. Mike Hailwood and Jim Redman's Honda RC166 250cc 6 cylinder was rated at 65-68hp. Yamahas won the Daytona 100 so many times it should have been renamed the Yamaha 100. If Honda would have campaigned their Privateer RS series from the Moto GP NSR Engines we could have seen some really battles. The TR series 350's were basically why HD pulled the Alloy XRTT's out of AMA RRing in 74. Kind of embarrassing to be going flat out on a 750cc Bike and have a 350cc Bike fly past you....

steve matz Good for, must have been awesome to witness in person...Kenny's ride was certainly the best I've ever seen...from the videos I've seen I always get a kick out of Jay looking at Kenny on the podium with the I know I am a great rider but this guy is from another planet look on his face.

I miss the smell. Castrol R (Now sold as Castrol R 40 SAE 40 4T Racing Engine Oil) being burnt should be available as aftershave for real men. There’s a few guy on KZbin popping a capful in their car petrol tanks just to recreate the aroma.

I think the early models were twin shock before developing into the mono shock versions. The engine was also 700cc

It is either a 750A or 750B...'74 and '75 respectively...that is assuming the fairing is correct...the 3 holes in the lower fairing were on the 750A and B models....so if it is a 750A it has the 694cc engine whereas if it is the 750B (i.e. '75) it has the 747cc engine...unless it happens to be a very early '75 TZ750 which some still had the 694cc engines. The twin shocked bikes were the A, B, and C's...'74, '75, and '76...the D and works OW31 bikes had the monoshock rear suspension starting in '77...clear as mud now? :) Actually I just listened to what the gentleman said and if I heard it correctly he said it was an A model so that would be a '74.

hi, old biker from the 70's, who had the balls to tell japanese engineers how lousy the original 700 handled and asked for a fix???????? wait, I see the name AGO, somewhere meandering down thru my memory, ah, Giacomo Agostini, yeah, he raced and won a few world championship races and titles, and couple of those TT's for a change up

They tz750 frames and front suspension was so thin and fragile everything bent and swayed under acceleration, so it was as lean as possible and was very close to the tz250/350 frames of the day.
