@1100HondaCB This bike actually ran under 10,000rpm unlike the honda 5. The honda 5 was nothing to sneeze at but never dominated the 125 class like this ra31 did. This bike was the1st 125cc bike to do a 100mph lap at the IOM in 1968 with Bill Ivey in control. I believe Phil Read did it also though. This made 44hp @17000rpm and had a 9 speed gear box .-I gather that this gentleman(Ferry Brower) put all of his rare gems in action this year for the big aniv at the IOM. VIDEO ANYONE ???!!!

Several sites say 17,500rpm.

Love this post! One of these ridden by Bill Ivy averaged 100+ MPH lap in the 1968 TT in the Isle-of-Man. Yeah, and on those tires!

That is the little RA31A Rocket that won 2 consecutive FIM World Championships. 1967 as the RA31 by the late Bill Ivy (1942-1969) and 1968 RA31A by Phil Read. The 67 bike was the RA31 which was essentially a scaled down version of Yamaha's 250cc RDO5. The engine was a liquid cooled V4 using a rotary disc valve intake system. Power output was 40hp. Extremely rare, probably only a couple left in the world. Bill Ivy tragically died in 1969 during practice at a race venue in East Germany while riding a JAWA ....

Timed at 144mph at the 1967 TT only 8 mph slower than Agostini's 500cc MV.

@rikwalker917 Ummm, this is one of the rarest 2 wheeled machines ever built. I believe only two currently exist on the planet and both are reproductions. These were raced with great success for only 2 years(1967 and 68) by the best and brightest in the world.

If you listen closely... you can hear the bike begging to be let loose :(

Glorious symphony! Bikes like these should race in the 125 class nowadays instead of the lawnmowers they use now!

You might like it or not but i still think this is of great historic value for all bikers.

The great Phil read allways road with his hand on the clutch lever because of the stroker seizing on him,on one such occasion he was passing Jim redman on the honda 6 when his v 4 250 decided to stop reving
@wontputrealname8 жыл бұрын
+bri879 Bill Ivy was killed in 1969 when the Jawa 500cc V4 seized. I don't think it was during a race though.

Wow, I am totally blown away! I heard Kawasaki did a KR3 (4cyl 2stroke), but never believed it. This is the first time I've come across this. I love the high pitch scream. I wonder if this beat Honda's 5cyl 4stroke 125.

To state this little machine is a V4 is not accurate. That suggests all four con-rods were on one crankshaft.......... not so. It was a two twin crankshaft configuration, one crankshaft set above & forward of the other & mechanically coupled. It was said Bill Ivy tap danced on the gears & sounded like a bubble bee when he managed to become the first rider to average 100mph around the Manx course on a 125cc machine. Same configuration for the 250cc four as I recall.
@sirclip12 жыл бұрын
Bill Ivy averaged 100MPH on a lap (38 Miles) at the Isle of Man TT in 1968 on one of these!

You can see the smoke from pipes 3 and 4 at the bottom, even tho the pipes are hard to see.
@TheBONZOID13 жыл бұрын
Sixties two stroke GP bikes were fairly prone to seizure, mechanics at the time erred on the side of caution & often jetted them to run a little rich, thus the smokescreen!

I think two strokes are pretty awesome, but you can see why no one wants to be behind them on group rides.

They do run a bit to much oil mixture. It can burn lean without the smoke. I usually use 1:45 on two stroke race engines and that's proven enough. To bad they almost died out, and 4-stroke took over. Two stroke is in your blood or not!
@blagahaga13 жыл бұрын
So i'm guessing you don't usually warm up your two stroke...?
