Desperate Housewives - 2x20 Goodbye Baby Lily

I was watching again the second season on DVD and watching this scene make me always feel so emotional. Is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. I leave the ending complete because too I like the final words for this episode.

Gabrielle and Carlos are finally happy with their new (and adopted) baby girl, Lily. But suddenly the birth mother wanted her baby back and Gabby isn't ready to said goodbye forever to her only important thing to change but they can't do nothing, only see how the other family leaves.

Gabby became my favorite houswife after a few seaons (initially Bree was). I loved how she hid her emotions yet was actually very emotional.

Well, in real life, the people who appear to be the less emotional are usually the most sensitive and bear the strongest emotions. That's why they tend to hide or suppress their emotions, because they know they would be easily hurt.

I loved Bree for the same reason, because I was also good at hiding my emotions, then I discovered that it is not healthy hiding them. People who hurt you they don't get that you are hurt because you don't give them feedback.

Top tier acting, for sure, I have watched this scene over and over and over, and this whole ending, and it just hits me so so so hard, especially as someone who struggles with alcohol, like Bree. But who really steals the show is Gabby. She's incredible here. I think she should have won an Emmy for it.

I love how this scene portrays Carlos' love for Gaby. Even though he's sad aswell he knows he can't fall apart because she needs him.. This scene deserves every possible award out there!

Poor Gaby, she's been so unlucky with children. First she gets pregnant against her will because of Carlos and his mother, then she has a miscarriage after she decides to keep it, then her adoptive baby is taken away, then the surrogacy does not work, then her biological child gets switched for another in the hospital AFTER she becomes pregnant when she did not want to, and finally she has to say goodbye to her biological daughter Grace forever.

Basically @@fe5018, Gaby's first baby girl was switched at birth by a drunken nurse with another baby that she and Carlos would raised as Juanita. They eventually meet Juanita's biological parents who raised their biological daughter as Grace. Very cool story line.

After 8 seasons, this will still always be one of the saddest most tragic scenes of desperate housewives. My heart went out to gabby, she wanted that baby so much and it was just taken away from her. Shame well never see waht kind of girl and relationship lily would be and have with gabby. SHe got juanita and celia instead who she still loved obviously cos they were her girls, even though juanita wasthe baby of someone else after the hospital mix up

I agree... no disrespect to mothers who put their babies up for adoption, I realize what a heart-wrenching decision that must be... but I don't think it's okay for them to legally have the right to change their mind weeks or even months after the fact... Like you said, the baby's new family has already bonded with them, and formed attachments....

Depends on where you are. But in a lot of states a birth mother has between 30 days and 6 months before the adoption becomes legal and final, so they can change their minds. My friend adopted, the first baby they got they only kept for 4 months, then the mother changed her mind. It was awful. They have another child now, but for months they were afraid to properly bond with the child, in case it too was taken from them.

That's what they purposely chose. If they'd picked a loving quote; 'I really still love her Gaby, I'm sorry' it would've been more complicated, but she said; 'We're eh... gonna give the family-thing a shot.." That's to make the viewers upset. You can imagine them sitting in a room, going; 'Hey Frank? Frank? The baby's crying again....WHÁT?! Noo, it's your turn...damnit! Get. the. fucking. diapers. Frank, it's your turn. I did it last time!"

That "long awaited dream" you're describing isnt some kind of entitlement, especially when what you're advocating for involves snatching the child away from its family. The cruelty in that is to the child ; what youre advocating for would privilege the self-centred desires and ambitions of hopeful adoptive parents over the well-being and best interest of the children. I can see Gaby's side. My brother and sister in law found a birth mother that wanted to give her son a better life. My brother painted a nursery, bought clothes, got everything ready and was so excited to finally have a baby. Well after the mom gave birth she decided to keep him and it hurt my brother and sister in law. To think your going to have a baby finally after 4 years of heartache and then it being ripped away from you its hard.

After all these years, I remember playing it to my media studies class. The entire class fell silent, her acting and the entire scene is one traumatic master piece. Even after all these years, when I watch it, it reduceds me to just such sadness. This scene has stuck with me since I first watched the show. It’s incredibly poignant but also follows along Gaby’s narrative of “spoiled rich girl not getting what she wants.” However this hits on such a human level because she’s being denied something that is not material, she’s being denied motherhood... something many viewers can possibly relate to.
