Looking how the "PzJager" wasn't damaged, except for the front wheels, and the lack of holes or other battle 's signs, it ' s VERY probable that the crew decided that their lives were more worth than Germany's "Honor" and make the logical choice...."Screw this, I'm outta there!". At this point any resistance was totally hopeless, at least for europeans' mentality (naturally with japanese it's another matter!)

Almost certain it was used in a last ditch attempt to drive back the Soviets . It would probably be dug in as driving around with the extra weight would have taxed the engine leading to breakdowns . If any more like the one in the photo were built they might well have had shock absorbers fitted at the rear as the recoil from the Stuk 40 must have been fierce . Fascinating video . How about covering the Alfred Becker improvisations used by the German forces during the Normandy campaign ?

The Germans did put 150mm mountain guns on the panzer 1. I think they stopped using it due to its poor crew protection and inability to carry ammunition, rather than the gun taxing it.

The Pak40 may have been heavy, but the Gwrmans previously mounted the 15cm sIG on the Panzer I and used the resulting vehicle as mobile artillery. Not many were made, but these early Panzer I conversions show that the vehicle could bear a surprising amount of weight and still remain somewhat mobile.

So it s not a panzer 4 gun but a stug3 gun. Althought it is basicly the same gun barrel, the gun mount and recoil system are different. A stug3 gun mount is bolted to the flor and carry both traverse and elevation system. Thus it is easy to fit it on anything, just bolt it onto it. While the pz4 gun mount only carry the elevation and need to be fixed to the front (vertical part) of a turret. So fitting it onto anything require the addition/creation of a new gun mount that take care of fitting and traverse.

Correct. It's a Sturmkanone (StuK), not a Kampfwagenkanone (KwK) or Panzerabwehrkanone (PaK). I don't know why they call it a PaK 40 throughout the video; that is very incorrect.

@mattbowden4996

I'm going to go against the consensus a bit here. Although this was clearly a failure, it's not an entirely terrible idea. If the vehicle was built and deployed with the strict understanding that it nothing more than a self-propelled anti-tank gun rather than a "proper" SPG, the concept has some merit - similar to the lighter Waffentrager designs but with the advantage of using a fairly plentiful, obsolete hull rather than anything that required new production. The problem is that the chassis would probably need to be modified a lot more extensively to accept such a relatively powerful gun, rather defeating the point of the conversion. 10/10 for effort, however. I can see what they were trying to do...

Ausf. B = short for Ausführung B, which means Mark II StuK = short for Sturm-Kanone = assault cannon, StuK is used when you put a Pak on a self propelled assault gun design although its basically the same gun, here the Pak 40 same with KwK on other Panzers: KwK means Kampfwagenkanone = literally battlewagon cannon, that designation is used on Panzers with a rotating turret we Germans like our accurate designations^^ in a worldwar about strangest shortcuts nobody would stand a chance xD greetings from Bavaria

Panzer 1 already struggle with the 50mm Pak AT guns. Now they mount an even larger gun for an ever smaller tank. Why don't they just tow it with a panzer 1...... Maybe to their logic a mounted gun can be deployed faster than a tiwed one. Then again it is already the end, desperation makes you do anything. By the looks of the tank, it probably shot a few shells, wrecked the track which cannot be repaired, then abandoned. It wasn't destroyed thus most likely the Russian simply ran past it as it was abandoned, the German crew who field it probably not in the mood to destroy a relatively useless last ditch equipment, as is more important to retreat or save themselves at this point.

Strange to see the gun still in its travel cradle, if it had been used. How far would a gunner dare traverse before firing, worrying about the conglomerate flipping over? As for its practicality? It's a good enough gun that it would still kill T34s from ambush. Shooting and scooting seems to be a bit of an unreasonable expectation with that chassis and power train

Since the Germans clearly understood the utility of shaped charge HEAT rounds, I wonder why they didn't put lightweight low pressure guns firing 75mm or 88mm HEAT rounds on obsolete older tanks. Guns like this armed many 1950s-1970s recon vehicles and armored cars. South Africa destroyed many T-54s and T-55s with Panhard and Ratel armored cars armed with low pressure 90mm guns firing HEAT rounds. And T-54s and T-55s were monsters compared to WWII armor. I would think that Panzer IIs or 38ts rearmed with an equivalent weapon would have been quite handy in defense.

Ironically, they did consider it. Information is very scant because a lot of the documentation was destroyed, but some WaPrüf 6 transcripts seem to indicate the Germans were evaluating whether the future of anti-tank warfare will be dominated by HEAT or super high velocity kinetic penetrators. That same discussion took place all throughout the cold war for all major powers. The real problem was most likely logistical rather than technical - they were even considering 8.8cm and 10.5cm HEAT shells with sub-caliber projectiles to retain muzzle velocity and other interesting solutions, but realistically, who was going to produce any of it in mass in 1945?
