I’m trying to keep control of recency bias, and with that in check, I would actually say this is the second best movie of the franchise. We got a movie that puts everyone with a brand new identity to keep it interesting, and it’s good to have a movie that focuses on Gru’s family again(The last movie of the franchise was just a prequel). My general complaint is that it feels like they set up certain plot points that aren’t really resolved by the end of the movie. (YES, ima actually do an in-depth review of the movie here): The issue with Agnes and lying isn’t really wrapped up properly, I feel like by the end, Gru and Lucy should have shown her appreciation for not trying to lie earlier on. I was also expecting the lady who got their hair ruined by Lucy to have some involvement again in the climax, but nope, after the supermarket scene, her last moment is her chasing after Lucy in the car. My biggest issue though is that Maxime loses too easily and quickly in the final fight. For crying out loud, I even felt like the Vicious six put up a BETTER fight in the Minions prequel than Maxime did here. Like literally after Gru manages to stand back up with the help of Gru Jr, it’s like 20 seconds of fighting before he falls off the lift to the ground. He managed to survive the fall, and I was hoping for a round 2 to the fight cause I was still wanting more, but then he’s forced back down by the Mega minions quickly. Also, they clearly say that Maxime knows where Gru lives, and yet he just starts searching everywhere once he gets out. There should have been a scene that showed Maxime breaking in to Gru’s classic black house and destroying it, only to find out he’s not there, because it doesn’t really feel right that he’s just searching around once he gets out of prison cuz how exactly does he know Gru already escaped and went into hideout? The ending felt very unusual and weird to me with the sing-off between Maxime and Gru. It was pretty cool to see all the villains back though. Despite that, the Minions actually surprisingly carried the movie this time because they didn’t bring in any noticeable plot errors. The sequence of the Mega Minions dealing with city issues horribly was fun. And the wacky nature of the movie for the pure intent of fun excuses a lot of issues unfortunately. This is the worst of the franchise in terms of making sense and being logical, but it sure does provide the randomness needed to just have a simple fun time, which makes it the best in that way.
