Destiny 2's Lore and Story holds a great mystery. Nezarec. Nezarec's Sin is an exotic Helmet that has left us wondering who Nezarec is, but now a new glaive, Nezarec's Whisper, has given us a new clue that might unravel the mystery and might point to Nezarec being a disciple of the Witness!

Theory: Each Disciple of the Witness is given their own Pyramid ship by the Witness. Savathun possibly played a role in preventing total disaster the last time the Darkness was about to destroy the Traveler. What if Nezarec's Sin was siding with Traveler during the Collapse and it was his Pyramid Ship on the Moon. What better way to cause pain than for one's deepest fears and regrets to come to life?

While I do definitely see the inner pain connection happening, as well as each pyramid having its own ability, but I don’t see it allying to protect life, yes it would need life to create pain but it was through that lunar pyramid that we got our first “direct” connection to the witness, and given callus’s obsession with the witness, it would imply that the lunar pyramid is still on the darkness’s side of things

@@brennanshaw99 That's the thing. The Witness is *not* the darkness, but a being that wields it like a cloak. Perhaps Nezarec realized that truth. That the darkness goes beyond the Witness, and decided to commit the ultimate sin. To betray the Witness in order to delve deeper into the truth that is the darkness, not it's wielder.

Could this mean the Lunar Pyramid is Nezarecs? Also if Nezarec is the 'god of pain' what can cause more pain than dredging up ghosts of people's regrets and failure? What if these haunting spirits are Nezarecs power and if he was a traitor to the witness, perhaps Calus has been tasked with recovering this power for the witness.

@@renandiasdecarvalho1397 That's a very very interesting idea. What if it was Nezarec that allowed Savthun to deceive the Witness? What if Nezarec has been helping us this whole time without us even knowing it. It could be that Nezarec was tasked to hold the Sol system millennia ago, and as he harvested the pain of Earth, grew to somewhat admire human tenacity and perserverance. What if once he learned the truth of the Witness's plan, he grew disenchanted with it? Leaving the glaive behind as a gesture of disgust. Without life, there is no pain, after all. I think the Nightmares we see are almost a tool to help us get stronger, by confronting our deepest pains, fears, regrets, and shame. I think Nezarec will be there when we confont the Witness. I think Nezarec might be the next one to take the mantle of darkness, if there's anyone who will. I'd go so far as to say that Nezarec is a representative of true paracausal Darkness. Darkness as a means to an end, and not as a means for THE end. Where the Witness has used the Darkness for his own twisted vision, and has spread the idea that he is synonomous with the Darkness, I only wonder if the Darkness has in some way enlightened Nezarec to the truth..

When Byf said that Nezarec could have rebelled against the Witness, it got me thinking. Is his "Sin" the fact that he rebelled? Then, if he is a god of pain, it would make sense, why - because Witness would destroy everything. No life, no pain. Did he sided with the Traveler? Considering the fact that he had 4 different tombs, he certainly was killed before, and he rose again. The text is from pre-golden age, and his glaive was left in the middle of Lunar pyramid. Was that Pyramid his? Darkness says in the Unveiling that it created us - the humanity. Is the Nezarec the one who oversaw our ""development"? And if he indeed betrayed the Witness, did he made humanity "worthy" of the Light? Nudging our evolution from time to time in particular direction? That of oppossing the Black Fleet? And, here is where things get crazy - why if Savathun wasn't the only one that was able to change forms? What if he secretly walked among us? Learning to be human? To be more than just destroyer? To eventually be chosen by the Traveler? To gain the Light? Yes, you guessed it - I speculate that WE, as our Guardian, were Nezarec. That's why pyramids see us as something familiar. That's why our doppelganger (Witness) in Black Garden asked us: "Don't you recognize us?" That's why we wield the Darkness so easily. That's why Nezarec's Whisper found its way back to us - to its original master. Were we the inspiration for Savathun? Did we helped her in her betrayal of the Witness? That would be even better mind blowing twist than that Darth Revan twist in KOTOR! What do you guys think of this?

Would be dope, and there was one little tidbit in Destiny 1 where a lab on Venus recognised us as a scientist. But if so, how did we wind up on Earth? We can’t be an Exo,because we were way out on the fields of Russia in nowhere. We couldn’t be in the Ishtar Collective as an Exo. We couldn’t be awoken, because we were part of the Ishtar Collective on Venus. I don’t see a connection there. But we could’ve been human, and that’d line up pretty damn well with the idea of Nezarec being us, because they’d need a human shape to wield.

Honestly Byf, I think you might be on to something with your theory. Taking into consideration what the helmet lore says, it basically boiled down to "This being is evil, but a different sort of evil." The word Bungie chose to use is, in of itself, extremely telling. They call Nezarec a "fiend", not a common demon or monster, the term has a sort of nobility to it. Devils can be bargained with, if you offer something in exchange, or if your goals align. I believe Nezarec was likely the second disciple of the Witness, inducted by Rhulk himself at the behest of his master. Rhulk was the Subjugator, the tyrant, Nezarec might very well have, or had, a moniker associated with pain or anguish in a similar fashion. Nezarec likely grew to realize that by achieving Finality, life, death, and pain itself would end, and thus so would he, and being a fiend, he would be far too narcissistic to accept that. I think there was a falling out, and while it might be a stretch, but remember what Savathûn's worm said. The Witch Queen was only A reason humanity and the Traveler survived, not THE reason. What if Nezarec intervened at a crucial moment, as Savathûn did? If the helmet lore is to believed, it is possible Nezarec was there at humanity's end to help ensure that pain and suffering would continue. Remember, Lightfall is approaching, and if the prophecy wall is to believed, the Vanguard is going to get beaten, much like it did when the Red Legion came in force. However, if there is any being with the power and knowledge to navigate the darkness at the end of days, to guide the Guardians, I think a fiend might very well be an appropriate candidate. Don't you?

I've long held the idea that Nezerac is a god of pain yes but he or it is opposed to both the darkness and the light, likely opposed to both the winnower and gardener. I think that Nezerac was the Second Disciple of the Witness, considering that Rhulk appears to have directly spoken to Nezerac from the lore. Also, Nezerac was known to humanity BEFORE the Golden Age and was written about as if they were some awful fiend. Putting all this together, with his Tombs even being indicated as being in our Solar System, leads me to a fascinating possible conclusion: Nezerac was a human chosen as a Disciple of the Witness even before the arrival of the Traveler. Darkness may have been here much longer than light...

That would be very interesting, but I find it interesting how similar the personality, or at least the theming and nature of nezarec is similar to that of the witness, especially the last section to the nezarec’s sin lore tab, which carries very witness-y connotations, let alone its darkly “divine” wording, especially when you consider the witness’s main MO and of rhulk’s story of how he became a disciple. Furthermore, I don’t think the Glaive was given to nezarec, it was never stated that it was given to the specific character, so it’d be strange to name it after the person who received it, especially when rhulk, who worships the witness, is the one giving it, so I think while yes it was given to a disciple, I think rhulk named it after the witness. One big clue to that could be the whisper part of the name, from what we’ve seen, the witness talks very calmly and quietly, almost like a whisper, which would make sense given his influence through the “voice in the darkness” that he uses to manipulate others. Savathun said the witness had many names, I think nezarec was one of them

While you're interpretation is fascinating Byf, I have an alternative one. I think Nezarec's kind of like Illidan. Hear me out, we're told he's "the final god of pain" but not to fear him for "all He offers is not as dark as it may seem." He's referred to as "darkest hour" but before that that he's called "the purest light". Remember that his Sin is "that he will never cower when dusk does fall, but stand vigilant as old stars die and new Light blinks its first". Vigilant... what an interesting word to use for some called "the final god of pain". Almost as if Nezarec isn't evil predator feeding off the pain and misery of others, but a protector. A silent, terrible sentinel. Another thing to consider is one of the perks on the weapon itself: Extrovert (Final blows while near multiple combatants or near Nightmares restores health). I don't think this is the weapon of a servant of The Witness. I think it's the weapon of someone who HUNTS the servents of The Witness. I think this is the weapon of a Dark Knight who looked at The Witness, saw that The Witness was winning and strove to understand and master the tools, weapons, and powers The Witness and it's servants use to better combat them. And that's why I think Nezarec is Destiny's Illidan

I know this is long, but bear with me here. If this pyramid is indeed Nezarec's, that means that up until the witness had found out whatever his sin was and act on punishing him for it, Nezarec had been passively watching over earth from the moon for an uncertain amount of time - because we know the pyramid has been parked in the moon far before the golden age of humanity. This isn't the first time that one of the Witness' disciples watched over a primitive alien species, because we know that Rhulk was specifically tasked by the Witness to semi-passively watch over the Ahslid in order to steer them towards the ideology of the darkness - which Rhulk failed and was subsequently punished by the witness with being forced to babysit Savathun. Now, we know that Nezarec defected from the witness, but because the pyramid hasn't left the Moon in eons it implies that he defected sometime during his semi-passive observation of Earth. After considering all of these things, I started to wonder how the witness would come to find out about Nezarec's sin. The witness isn't omnipotently aware of everything, everywhere, all at once because otherwise he wouldn't need his disciples to helm the task of going out and semi-passively observe other potential dark-siding alien species and bring them under the Witness' influence. We also know that the Witness isn't one for frequent personal visits, and instead, relies on the information of the reports and long-distance communication with their disciples, meaning the Witness was most likely not immediately aware of what Nezarec's sin was until either: the witness themself/themselves paid Nezarec a personal visit and found out, or someone/something else tipped the witness off. This sin was clearly worse to the witness than causing one of the Witness' coveted civilizations' demise with a bit more direct intervention than what the Witness desired, because Nezarec is 'dead' instead of having had only been banished and given a simple job far below what you qualify for. The Witness really only hates one/two things, and that's the light and its ideology - the darkness takes, and the light gives. Have you heard of the myth of Prometheus? The greek god that gave humanity the knowledge/power of fire from the flames of Olympus, so that they could fight back against the primal world and conquer it. I bring this story up because of something that savathun had asked the guardian at the end of a memory alter quest, she asked us to think about why we can wield both light and dark powers when everyone else MUST pick a side, and maybe the myth of Prometheus is just a myth, what if it was a piece of oral history of Humanity's encounter with Nezarec? What if Nezarec's sin was a gift to humanity, and what do you think that gift could be? Well, I don't think it was something as simple as just fire, that most likely wouldn't warrant Nezarec's death, and it wasn't any sort of paracausal/special abilities since humanity didn't have any until the arrival of the traveler. No, it couldn't have been any of those things, but what if it was knowledge and memory? What if the reason we, as humanity, can wield the light and the dark is because we didn't uplift ourselves to sentience of our own accord, but was instead due to an infusion of darkness? Memory and knowing, we know these to be inextricably tied to the darkness ("the dark remembers, the light forgets"), and what if infusing a pre-sapient lifeform with a form of darkness can accelerate this transition? Now I'm sure at this point you're wondering why the Witness would bother to take the time to assign a disciple observe a pre-sapient species instead of a fully-sapient species. My answer to that would be that it would be far easier to sway an entire civilization towards the darkness, successfully, if you start at the very beginning. It could even follow the same exact methodology that Rhulk was supposed to follow when converting the Ahslid, a mostly-passive observation where you could only influence from the shadows, and still work. Instead of following the orders of the Witness, Nezarec secretly uplifted us as a gift instead of allowing us to come to "full-maturity" on our own. This would fly entirely under the radar of the witness for some time because our sentience was inevitable, so it wouldn't be obvious as to what Nezarec at done until the Witness were to take a closer look. I'm unsure as to how that would unfold, as I feel certain that Nezarec had died within their pyramid. I know there's talk about the Fourth Tomb of Nezarec, and I don't think that the name implies that the tomb is for Nezarec, but that is it a tomb created BY Nezarec. A tomb for an entire civilization, doomed at the hands of Nezarec themself - A tomb that is the entire planet. There's so much more I could add, but this is all I can type at the moment. Let me know if I missed anything, or if something I said doesn't line up with what has been established. Hope you enjoyed reading!

I think Nezarec is the ideals of the darkness itself. He brings the end to all who shouldn’t be, his path offers help to those without power, he is not evil so long as you don’t use him for it, and his sin is to not give up. To fight for his right to survive. And he will always be there, awaiting the birth and death of new variables in his great eternal game. And it’s whisper is simply the longing to choose the path of the darkness in any way. The tombs might be the pyramids or structures of the darkness.

I think it’s time we stopped and wondered if all the forms of light we use came directly from the traveler, as it’s very possible Nezerec is the “Old God” referred to in said Aspect, and if he defected from darkness, he may have brought darker ideologies into the light when he switched sides

It may be a looney idea, but the lore we've gotten thus far makes it sound, to me, that Nezarec would be an "ally" against The Witness and the Darkness. Not that he's a good guy, but more that we would share a common enemy. I guess he'd be an ally in the sense that he'd probably turn on us once The Witness is dealt with. Theory: in the forsaken lore drifter metions that he once visited the 4th tomb of Nezarec (assuming he is telling the truth). It implies that there are at least 4 of these tombs somewhere in the universe. I belive due to the new lore this season that Nezarec is the owner of the lunar pyramid and the veiled statue is of him or her self. The veiled statue is a prominate piece of architecture which is shared between the lunar and europan pyramid but not Rhulks pyramid. So my theory is that nezarec owns both the lunar and Europan pyramids and they are the "tombs of Nezarec" the drifter spoke about

In one of the conversations you can overhear in the Prophecy dungeon, the Emissary can force the Drifter through a series of visions, one of them being a world that is "full of Light." Part of that exchange says this: "It begs you for death. On this world, ruled by full Light, it cannot die. It has companions that are as long-lived. It hates them, and they hate it. It will never end. It will never die." If the speculation that Nezarec is sympathetic to Light is sound, then I think this could constitute solid evidence, alongside the line about Nezarec waiting for "new Light" to overtake when "dusk falls"

@Thatoneguy37191

So i know this video is old at this point, but i was reading the nezerec lore tabs and i was just trying to find some specific stuff since Bungie usually likes to be specific with their lore. While i was reading thr Nezerecs sin lore tab, a couple of things really pointed out as strange. 1) the lore tab doesnt specifically point to nezerec being aligned with the darkness, in fact, it specifically points in there as “he will never cower when dusk does fall” not dark or light, but dusk. 2) in the lore tab, at the end they say “but stand vigilant as old stars die and new Light blinks it first” now earlier they use the word “light” saying he is “the purest light” but in this case they decided to capitalize light, as if its a name, specifically the Travelers Light. Now with this im just going to write up a theory and say that Nezerec was a disciple of the Witness, but not anymore. Nezerec was the owner of the lunar pyramid, but now it lies abandoned (until the point that calus took ownership). The lore tab specifically states that “of hated nezerec” is a pre-golden age text, so maybe nezerec is a human disciple? Anyways, i think Nezerec worked alongside Savathun to trick the witness that they had slain the Traveler during the collapse, some documents of the collapse do specifically state massive lightning storms on Earth, and Nezerec supposedly had an arc glaive, but maybe they tricked the Witness by injuring or disabling the traveler? Afterwards however Nezerec ended up on that thin line of being between light and dark, being the “god of pain” but also the “purest light” and all, and abandoned the pyramid beneath the lunar surface. Maybe perhaps Nezerec is still somewhere in the system, or maybe he got murdered by the Witness when he noticed his betrayal (probably around the end of D2 vanilla when there was the whole “introduction to the pyramid ships” cutscene) I would like to think of Nezerec as something akin to the Grim Reaper of the Destiny universe, being not a force of murder and true death, but one who seeks to be the bridge between life and death. Bringing it back to the last line of nezerecs sin,”but stand vigilant as old stars die and new Light blinks its first upon this fêted eternity” if we learned anything from destiny lore, both from the speaker in d2 and dredgen yor, everything that lives has Light in them, but i think Nezerec doesnt seek out those who are living, and have the Light in them, but rather those who are dead and have no Light left. He stands for dusk, not Light nor Dark, and even when dusk falls, he will stand vigilant watching both the living and the dead.

Something to consider whenever Nezarec’s name is mentioned: The first mention of Nezarec came from the Warlock Exotic Helm and most of us had it drop after the Red War (when the Pyramids were first revealed in that one cutscene). The second was that Lore Entry from S6, and those of us who completed the Forsaken campaign and did their 10 meetings with Mara Sov could see the hologram of the Black Fleet on the table in her throne room prior to said season. Finally, we took down Rhulk in a Pyramid during Vow and now this season we have this glaive from a dark origin bearing Nezarec’s name. There’s too much coincidence for me to think that Nezarec is another Disciple, especially when we all got our first appearance of The Witness. I think that this a name to look out for in the final two seasons to Lightfall.

Another Theory: Nezarec could be the being within the Traveler, the passage on it seems to be prophetic, when new lights blink their first, the travelers healing of itself heralding new ghosts, new lights. The Purest Light in the Darkest Hour, the pyramids draw near and the traveler heals. Could also be a reference to the end of the red war when the purest light from the traveler spread across the universe. The Final god of Pain, The Witnesses words to the Traveler, you promised them life but deliver only death. Could the sin be the Gardeners departure from the garden. Would do you think of the viability of this theory.

I find it interesting how similar the personality, or at least the theming and nature of nezarec is similar to that of the witness, especially the last section to the nezarec’s sin lore tab, which carries very witness-y connotations, let alone its darkly “divine” wording, especially when you consider the witness’s main MO and of rhulk’s story of how he became a disciple. Two possibilities come to mind for me either Nazareth is a disciple of the darkness and has already been possibly defeated or at the very least might be reforming or something like that and with him being a god of pain maybe we'll get some kind of darkness power to where we do like poison like with Thorn does or the hive Wizards. Two and this one's a little bit more disturbing to me what if much like savathun has her own agenda her own ideals and she's a light bearer and if the light is a neutral force and the traveler isn't necessarily giving it always to good people what if Nezerac is a dangerous enemy that will have to face that is some kind of powerful light bearer that has ill-will for us.

Nezarec's sin is likely the rebellion. You think Rhulk or the Witness would allow someone under them to be seen as a God? Even Savathun wasn't viewed as a God beyond the Hive, yet she was merely a pawn. We have a book about Nezarec before the Golden Age even happened, and the pyramid on the moon had Nezarec's glaive so in theory Nezarec could've ended the hunt for the Traveler long ago but didn't. I think Nezarec will rise to aid us mostly as a neutral sense since helping us means life goes on and life means pain.

Maybe a less important vector of speculation but still. I think the reason the glaive is attuned to arc is because nezerac was already powerful enough with the void he didn’t need any more of it. Think about it, if we are to assume nezerac’s sin is his actual helmet or at least drawn on his power. That means that the ability to regain power though causing void damage is something he can do far better that we can. He can probably fully refresh all 7 of his grenade charges by only dealing a bit of void damage. So giving him a weapon with a kind of power he doesn’t have makes him stronger more so that making him better at the thing he is already great with.

It was eventually revealed that Shin wanted Guardians to wield light and dark in symmetry against the Witness and the Black Fleet. One could argue that the “Dark Vanguard” has succeeded where Shin and his Dredgens failed, as the Dredgens were also more of pretenders, as they didn’t wield stasis. In any case, I’d love to read more lore about Shin. Maybe even meet him in a quest or campaign at some point? I’d love to see his reaction to stasis, if he’d be willing to use it, and if he’d collaborate with Eris and Elsie. He’d probably be pretty shocked to realize it had been entities like the Witness, and it’s Disciples that had been corrupting Guardians all this time. Makes you wonder if he’d feel any sort of guilt at killing Guardians that could’ve been cured from the Witness’ manipulation? Of course, Eris hasn’t found a way to save corrupted Guardians like Tristen and Sola, yet.

My friends and I have been speaking a lot about theories on Nezarec and I'll list some of them here. So, we do indeed believe that he did break away from The Witness. With that, I think that he ended up similar to Rhulk at the end of the raid which would lead me to believe that Disciples can't be killed, but rather frozen as a means of stopping them. After he was frozen, he had been split into parts and hidden to make sure that he can't be unfrozen and that explains the tombs if they do exist. However, I think his consciousness is still in his pyramid which we think is the one on the Moon and he still stays there in a form similar to Tolland. I think he is the creator of the Nightmares, but he didn't mean to make them. I think that his regrets, fear, and pain from doing work for The Witness physically manefested and they are just a thing that exists now. Him regretting his actions would explain why he would want to stop working for The Witness. This is definately my most ungrounded theory, but I feel that it might explain the helmet for the warlocks. I think he may have had some form of connection to The Traveler before becoming a Disciple. He may have possibly been a Guardian at some point since we don't know much of anything about how many places The Traveler has been and how many people it has blessed before the Eliksni as far as I am aware. In the dark timeline, we do know that The Witness did take the Guardians from The Traveler by giving them Stasis so I don't think it's too much of a stretch for them to have taken Guardians before. It's possible that a Disciple or The Witness offered knowledge for him to be a Disciple and if he was warlock like, then it would make sense for him to accept. I'm also thinking he may have been the first void user since Nezarec's Sin has a void related effect and if that's true then it would make sense that he would've caught The Witness's eye.

Others have brought up the idea that Nezarec was Disciple and his Pyramid was/is the one on Luna (we do not know if Nezarec is still within it, or if he’s still alive.) That is, if like Rhulk, each Disciple has a Pyramid ship of their own. It seems that if this is true, then it is likely Calus has been given the mantle of the Disciple and the Lunar Pyramid will be made his vessel. If so, then we should look towards Europa. Because the way I see it, that’s where the next season and Disciple will be. It could be that Disciple is Eramis, Clovis Bray, or Us. We also have to consider that there may be a Pyramid in the Black Garden, buried where we fought the Sanctified Mind.

Maybe Nezerac was a gaurdian exceptionally powerful in void light prior to the collapse. He may have attracted the witnesses attention like Rhulk did with Lubrea. Savathun may have convinced him to betray the witness thus "saving us from the collapse". Knowing of him as a Disciple, she may have seen him with his gifted glaive, thus why the enigma seems similar. It's based of her memory of the weapon. The hive also then did their best to keep the moon locked down and the pyramid hidden. We may be able to commune with the pyramid because it was meant to be a tool for a guardians gifted by the dark, we just happen to be the next successor.

I'm wondering if maybe more than Nezerac is defying the will of the Witness.

My theory with Disciples is that the main Disciples we will face over the next year are pairs with an "unlikely ally" of ours, who ill be referring to as a Champion. Savathûn is not really our enemy, we work towards the same goals even if she is not currently resurrected. She very well could come back and be the Champion of the Hive. Her pairing is natural Xivu Arath, her own sister. Both see diverging futures for the hive. Caiatl and the vanguard are firmly allied, and her natural pair is her father Calus. Finally, we have Mithrax and his pair, Eramis, both of whom are more or less vying to fulfill the Kell of Kells prophecy. This also makes sense given what we know about the enemy races: the Vex are the result of the garden game and are unlikely to put forward a Champion or a Disciple because they are a collective. The Taken and Scorn are puppets of the Disciples at this point. This only leaves the Cabal, the Fallen, and the Hive as enemy races that can put forward both a Champion and a Disciple.

My theory at the moment is that Nezarec is that "would be disciple" that Rhulk was working on before he was punished. "A weapon similar to his own" (a glaive) and the fact that Rhulk allowed him to go berserker without any true force against it. Perhaps Nezarec became such a monster fully devoted to causing pain to everything that The Witness couldn't truelly use him.

I think the Tombs of Nezarec might suggest this Disciple could be a lich of sorts or otherwise someone capable of undoing their own death, like with a Throne World. The Lunar Pyramid Im theorizing belongs to Nezarec and theyre either temporarily dead due to the Collapse or might be slumbering (which explains why Eris wasnt able to make contact). Nezarec being the god of pain also explains the Nightmares being this Disciple's power, as they torment their victims relentlessly causing psychological pain. Calus is communing with the Lunar Pyramid to either wake Nezarec or tap into their slumbering power for himself. Now, I think the bigger question here is why Eris was looking for Nezarec. Not to kill them, else she would have brought a raid team with her. So maybe to establish contact? But why would Eris seek a Disciple for such a thing? I also think Nezarec betraying the Witness is unlikely.

I think Nez already betrayed the witness and now Eris is trying to wake him up and find some help agaisnt the darkness within him, kinda like "best way to know your enemy is to befriend him"

Pretty positive Nezarec is a Shrike, a being described in the book series "Hyperion Cantos". Background it, and blow your mind with the connections. I think it would be cool if he was a Disciple, but I have a feeling he's a bit larger than that. We seemed to ignore the fact that this weapon also has Whisper in the Title. I do think the Moon Pyramid was Abandoned, but I do not think Nez is a disciple. I think, rather, that the Witness may in fact answer to Nezarec. You see, if we take the title of the weapon a bit differently, it could also suggest that which produces the Whisper, is Nezarec. Beings that Whisper don't seem to answer to anyone, especially not the Witness, who merely uses the Black Fleet but did not in fact create it (as Eris mentions, he's perverting the Darkness, turning it into something evil). I'd also stand to reason, that what Cayde mentioned being on Enceladus, in relation to the Deep Stone Crypt... was actually Nezarec's 4th Tomb.. if he can whisper.. no doubt it can be heard from this location.

i was honestly surprised, thought bungie forgot about this guy. hopefully they'll delve more into him soon. Rulk apparently gisfted him glaive, so maybe this Nezarec could the first deciple Rulk taught? the witness sent Rulk to Sava'thun to teach to raid as a new deceiple, which means he had experience teaching others before. until we see otherwise, I'll consider Nezarec the 2nd deciple of the Witness

Also worth pointing out, the hall Eris found the glaive in contained "Bisected statues", (bisected = cut in half). Not unlike the Lubraeian statue cut off from the waist up aboard the Lure, where we first found the Enigma Glaive.

Random food for thought, nezarecs lore states that he is an end. Within the new season Eris says the following (paraphrased because I can't remember the exact) "the final shape is something that is there when there is nothing" (something around that, will edit when I get the dialog again) so maybbeee ... Nezarec is the final shape ??

It's exceptionally thin, but, the Drifter often tells a not more truth than you'd think, assuming the Forth Tomb is real for a moment. I can think of two possible reasons for tombs to be built. Either monuments to people and societies who have been ended by His works, or he has actually 'died' a number of times and he just comes back. Both have precedent and I'm not sure which is more disconcerting.

Okay so hot take, maybe the ahamkara that's bone Eris has is Nezarac and is the reason with it has multiple hidden tombs to prevent people finding ahamkara bones. The whisper is what transported Eris to the point within the Lunar Pyramid and I think that Xivu Arath was the Lunar disciple hence why Crota was given dominion over the Hellmouth. This is all spinfoil though at the end of the day. Edit: So the above theory clashes with this but Nezarec may come from the Greek "Neza" meaning pure and "Rec", an Old English word derived from Norse reykr meaning Smoke. The idea of a pre Golden Age text that deigns Nezarec as a fiend but not in a demonic way may be the idea of deceit itself that thrives off pain and suffering hence the name "purely smoke"

Kind of a wild half-formed theory, but what if Nezarec is the being that lives within the traveler? This season has hinted pretty extensively that there is something living within the traveler itself and that this coming encounter with the Witness is going to involve whatever's inside if that last unknown icon on the prophecy wall is to be believed. This entry speaks of Nezarec being witness to new Light with the Light being capitalized like that, indicating a proper noun and not just the concept of light. The Traveler has regularly provided power to various species and then flat out abandoned them in their times of need, providing a source of a great deal of lasting pain and anguish (see the Eliksni who were so hurt by this abandonment that they've chased the traveler from their own home to ours). The fourth Tomb could be in reference to the fourth planet the Traveler abandoned. Bungie seems to be working towards a narrative focused on the separation of Light as a power and the Traveler - or whatever is inside of it - as a being and even as actual forces of good and evil. The nine strongly suggested that pure light and pure dark are both equally destructive through the armor gained from the Prophecy dungeon. We now have Nezarec equipment related to Void and Arc - just missing solar to hit the full trinity of light-granted power. All of this taken together suggest to me that it's possible.

Nezerac may have been one of the first risen in the travelers light. its referenced that they will stand watch until the final hour, even when dusk falls. considering they have 4 tombs may indicate that. its also said that light is part of him in some form. so he may be a risen that wielded both light and darkness. and maybe was a disciple

The fact that Nezarec's Sins lore tab is from a pre-golden age text indicates that he must have had some interaction with humanity before the travelers arival. What if the Lunar Pyramid actually predates the Travelers arrival in Sol? Maybe he interacted with humanity in its infancy and saw their potential so he left it behind with the intent to return once we had matured.

I think nezarec is gonna be a disciple of the light. With all of the things about pain and light I think it’s kind of directly referring to the idea that the light’s path is harder but more forgiving as the Leviathan says. I think we should think of the wording less as pain, and more as struggle. That totally opens up the possibility he’s affiliated or was affiliated with the light in some way. Also I’m not sure how far back Rhulk goes but he could have gifted the glance to nezarec when the light and dark weren’t at such extreme odds.

Since Nezarec is associated with pain, and the glaive was found within proximity of lunar pyramid, it would make sense that he at least *used to be* a disciple. The evidence would be as follows: - Nezarec apparently was given a glaive by Rhulk when they became a disciple. - Rhulk as a disciple was given a pyramid, which has Lubraean design - Lunar pyramid doesn't match Rhulk's with its design - Even before shadowkeep it was vacant - Nightmares, associated with pain, are a defence mechanism of the pyramid in question - Drifter supposedly visited one of their tombs In addition to that there are the facts that first mentions of him come from before golden age, and Rhulk was given the task to watch over a specie. My theory is that the lunar pyramid indeed belonged to Nezarec, a former disciple of the Witness. It was located on the moon for the purpose of surveillance over our species, either before the traveller even arrived, or right after its arrival. Nezarec communicated with the Witness through the artifact we obtained in shadowkeep, as when tracing the signal from it, we met the Witness in person in the black garden. Then there are two possible paths: either when the time was right, Nezarec called the fleet over to trigger the collapse and deserted some time later, or deserted at some point during our golden age, and that was what caused the fleet to arrive, possibly due to miscommunication or lack thereof. Either way desertion would seem to be Nezarec's "sin", and the reason why the lunar pyramid is vacant. His tombs are located within vicinity of the solar system, which could either mean that they are literal tombs and Nezarec is dead, or they store artifacts associated with them, while Nezarec themself is in hiding. TL;DR Nezarec is the pilot of the lunar pyramid. Pyramid stayed and is vacant due to their sin of desertion. Nezarec would be responsible in- or directly for the collapse. Information on them and their whereabouts could be obtained from Nezarec's tombs.
