Destiny 2 - THE NINE ARE COMING BACK! New Lore Reveals What They're After

Where are the Nine? It’s been awhile since we received any information on them, the focus was the Witness and the final battle. In the Final Shape though, we see depictions of Xur and Starhorse, and even receive a new entry about Drifter’s vision with the Emissary. The Nine may reappear in a future episode or Frontiers and today we discuss what we know.

this is what i was thinking about too. but what gets me is that there are two groups in the nine one of benevolent beings and one of not so keen on the inhabitants of sol. i would hope that bungie runs with this idea preferably giving the good guys the echoes first then have the bad guys take it and then win the struggle for power and evolve into the next big bad guys.

It serves as a way for him to access theor realm, we literally use it to get to the spot for the Reckoning activity before it got vaulted and Prophecy dungeon.

I say this with no irony, the lore Dust, and Ecdysis, as well as the Invitation to The Nine visits from Season of Drifter are some of the best lore stuff put into the game and it's actual cryptic stuff that *did* get delivered upon for the most part. You could even interpret the Week 5 visit with the "4th wall break" could actually have been the Emissary talking about the Winnower vs Gardener game when she says how the Guardian can leave this game and has agency. At this point(and even before) the Guardian being plot convenienced Space Jesus is the essential special, chosen one who isn't bound to anything in particular. Just thinkin' out loud. In some ways I feel like the game's story just got a little too dumb and goofy at times to commit to how the Nine were conceived and what they are capable of. In an ideal world we would've visited the Cocytus space station by now.

When 30th anniversary was released the prevailing theory was that Starhorse actually represented Bungie themselves. That whole cosmic gameshow thing is pretty fourth-wall breaking so that seems reasonable. I’m inclined to believe that the Xur/Starhorse shot is just a little bit of fan service, but this wouldn’t be the first time something in the game that directly acknowledges us the players (cough cough Ahamkara cough Winnower) has major story impact.
