This could have two meanings. That it’s referring to the winnower and being its first knife or there’s a being that scared the witness so much it then was known as “the witness” and would try to freeze the universe to avoid ever seeing it again. Small idea/wonder… The Conductor/Maya is using Vex Radiolaria to convert organic matter into Vex structures, yes? Similar to what the Vex do themselves. What if The Conductor is the origin of the Vex? What if she created the first Vex in her attempt to reshape history, which then created more and then all went on a campaign across space and time to find a timeline where The Conductor’s vision is finalized? Thus creating her own paradox
