A powerful being made from the corpses and minds of the first civilization to be blessed by the traveler. Before becoming the witness they wanted to use both darkness and light to shape the universe into what they desired. A feat accomplished by connecting the traveler to its dark counterpart, the Veil. But the traveler abandoned them. Forcing them merge themselves into the witness and hunt it down across space to enact their final shape upon the universe. With the teams impacted (art, music, freaking CREATIVE PEOPLE THAT MAKE THE GAME) I expect we will see the future of Destiny be more about maintaining & generating revenue to fuel Marathon, and that's about it. TFS is not the totality of the game. It is an addition to a very tired live service model which drags down any benefits TFS may have provided. I still don't believe it made the numbers the previous expansions made. To hang your hat on one expansion is just a foolish business practice.
@chrissturges89523 ай бұрын
It is odd how folks seem to be forgetting last falls news. Bungie missed revenue targets by 45% last year. This is why they shed 100+ jobs. No matter how good TFS might be, you lost so much good will the the "quality miss" (as Parson states) of Lightfall and its the end of a 10 year saga where there really isnt a way to catch up aside from watching videos on KZbin. There was no way that TFS would make up for that deficit. And if we drill in to that: the average player count for TFS on Steam for launch month was 10k less than Lightfall's launch month. Further, TFS has seen the sharpest drop off post an expansion release, with July's average steam player count at roughly 60k (a nearly 50% drop off). It took 3/4 months for Lightfall player count to hit that level. On top of that it is weird how people also seem to forget how in the announcement Parson ostensibly said it was poor management decisions and this decline in revenue that got them into this place. This echoes reports from last year about how the Sony buyout was a lifeline to keep Bungie afloat. This is FURTHER backed up by the fact that Microsoft passed on purchasing Bungie because of Bungie's high run rate and not seeing a viable RoI (Microsoft who went on a giant purchasing spree spending multiples of what Sony paid for Bungie). Bungie management made decisions while independent that forced them to look for a lifeline, I am not sure why folks think things would be better if they were still independent?
@RedShadowOfSaturn3 ай бұрын
This is one of the better ways to detail it. Even if I were nice and said TFS did some good things and succeeded in proving a conclusion for people...the legion of this game's fans thinking Into the Light and Final Shape together meant huge changes to Bungie's content development and release cadence and business practices...were really deluding themselves hard.

Destiny 2 playerbase has more than likely stagnated, and it has been this way for a very long time. Not many new people are willing to jump into it because of multiple factors, but mainly the price, having to catch up with people and just this game being largely based upon a gameplay framework of 2014. The only way to revitalize the fanbase, bring new blood and lapsed players (such as myself) back into it is Destiny 3. People who say a new game wouldn't accomplish anything are completely ignorant of just how Destiny is viewed by everyone else than is not a fan.

I'd also be ok, gutted but ok if they cancelled Frontiers and didn't do any more episodes or seasons after these 3 to work on D3. But i feel like D3 is less likely now than before, unless Marathon does amazing and can prop Bungie up while they develop D3

Once human is doing something right that a lot of people have issues with, with most live service games. Anything that can be bought with real money is pure cosmetic. Not a single pay to win item in the game, as far as I've been able to find. It's breath of fresh air after years of D2, and most other games, getting more pay to win. The team is really clear about patches and updates, and quick with game-breaking bugs. A lot of people are cautious about the seasonal reset, Hopefully it's better than it sounds like it might be.

I think it's time we all start playing the first descendant. Show Bungie we will happily move to another looter MMO if they don't make destiny their priority. We want all sunset content back, new raids and dungeons multiple times a year, and new aspect and fragments for all classes ! Let's not forget we need more strikes, PVP maps and Gambit maps ! If you want us to play ritual playlists keep them updated !

@jasonhoerner99543 ай бұрын
Halo 3 was cultural phenomena, with a relatively short campaign (under 8 hours), simple PvP multiplayer, single platform, and yet sold over 12 million copies (I played it and loved it, I'm not knocking it, but it's no Elden Ring or Witcher 3 or Baldur's Gate 3 in complexity). It was a unicorn that can't be replicated -- if the same exact quality of game was released at present, it wouldn't sell a quarter that amount of units. Even great game companies dependent on revenue from single player hits go out of business at any time if they suffer a couple misses (Eidos, Neversoft, Westwood, Pandemic, Ensemble Studios, the list goes on and on). The idea of live service games is that you can have a continuous revenue stream, so you're not dependent on hits, and the total money that can be made is a lot more long term (think World of Warcraft, League of Legends, Roblox, etc), so it can sustain a company. But I think Bungie underestimated the costs, and the difficulty of keeping the player base engaged. The amazing controls, sound, art, and effects have always been unquestioned on Destiny, but it's a lot harder to come up with consistently good story content, unique experiences, rewarding grind, and re-playability.

It would be easier for them to restore the cut content than make new stuff. I'd like to see them do the episodes as planned, then next year focus on restoring all of the cut content and just make a complete version of the game.

I wish that Bungie communicated more with us. I would have been totally happy if they can out and let us vote or take a poll of what we want. If they came out and said look you’re going to get the final shape. A great story, a raid, new destination and that’s all but this is the end, we are going to take a break and work on Destiny 3 for example. I would have been cool let’s do it. I’ll play this out and then wait. But this, the season/episode model, story/acts, possibly no raid/dungeon, dip feed, not knowing what frontiers is, etc. and now more layoffs. I mean I get their focus will be destiny and marathon but I’m not playing marathon and the template for what Destiny has become now is not going to work. I think they need a break… we all need a break. So what if it’s 3-5 years and they come back better than ever. Just do it the right way and do right by the players and your employees

I can’t help but wonder where we would be if Marathon was just a simple, single player shooter in the same vein as Doom 2016. A fun side project to let Bungie flex their PvE chops unrestrained by Destiny’s framwork. Probably would have made a solid chunk of money too. But I guess we’ll never know, and this is the result of Pete and co. wanting to chase multiple golden geese instead of sticking with the one they had. Just a damn shame.
@ghostfazedkillah8873 ай бұрын
Honestly bungie was never big enough to support one game on its own nevermind finishing one up and starting a new. They should have just put all thier people on d2 until it was finished while having a very small team working on ideas and models for marathon. But that's not how it worked out their appetite for money and to do more things is what ultimately undone them. Bungie themselves was never on time with expansions in the beginning and always tried to do more or take on more than they could deal with, this rarely paid off.

After sticking with them for the past 10 years for Destiny and previously for Halo, seeing what’s happening now is disheartening. The way they let Destiny slide by with minimal effort until it’s too late then rush,rush, rush during delays isn’t instilling any sort of confidence for future projects. Can’t say I’m thrilled to jump into something new to have these poor decisions made to the new thing as well. Management needs to go.

Outside of a really good campaign, a new raid, a new patrol zone and some Public events what else does that dlc offer to the core playlists? The core playlists are supposed to be the retainer and yet the supposed “expansions” aren’t expand on those in ages, trials is a mess isn’t fun, not rewarding, and only 2 new weapons worth chasing, the strike playlist is shit and gambit is another story. D2 doesn’t need a reboot or a patch, it needs a real fckn expansion.

@Cross314153 ай бұрын
Despite the inherent risk in a multiplayer PvP shooter, I think Marathon is looking to carve out an intelligent niche. Almost everything in the genre is stupidly hardcore, cf. Tarkov and Hunt. Creating a more mainstream entry into a genre with proven potential is how Fortnite took off, being a more mainstream parallel to Plunkbat. P.S. A "2025" window leaves a year and a half from now. There's room.

Dreams are always bigger than the wallet, and when you couple that with corporate bloat, dreams are squashed and promises broken. With the way Bungie dumbed down Destiny over the years, due to player feedback, I'm still surprised that they need as many developers working on this project. Maybe a healthy Bungie is to rediscover its roots and scale of the early 2010s -- which unfortunately will anger more content creators.

Yeah, I'm done.
@rushboardtechuk3 ай бұрын
I feel as though Sony had a plan to ultimately downsize Bungie, no matter TFS' reception. As has been said, Lightfall had a 45% revenue expectation that never materialized, so the studio's blood was in the water long before layoffs began. It's hard to run a Live Service/MMO nowadays without a lot of people, and they also can't be timesharing development on another game. I am happy to hear Luke Smith is gone, but I think Mark Noseworthy's departure will be another in a long line of mistakes. As for Marathon, we don't really know what it is; there's not even a trailer showing gameplay.
@frankcouper93773 ай бұрын

Here’s where I disagree, if the scale back destiny 2 at all, they are sort of finished. If expansions are anything less than the likes of forsaken, TTK, the final shape, then people just won’t stay. The playerbase won’t accept another lightfall. Hopefully their focus on Destiny now will lead to better destiny expansions. As far as a Destiny 3, why? What could Destiny 3 offer that Destiny 2 doesn’t already offer. If they release Destiny 3 and it has less content that Destiny 2 and doesn’t offer anything substantially new, people won’t play it.
@viable35893 ай бұрын
The issue with Destiny isnt that its a bad franchise. Its one of the better ones, actually. The problem is that Destiny 2 as a game has failed in the eyes of many players. Bungie releasing Destiny 3 will likely bring back many players that quit Destiny 2 because they loved the world that Bungie built but hated how they did it. D3 could possibly save the company and franchise, if it happens and releases before its too late for them.

Marathon feels like it should be the thing to be shelved- it doesn't feel like it has a real identity or spot in the market. A hero/extraction shooter doesn't sound very viable or fun, and without having any PvE elements, it doesn't hold a ton of appeal for a lot of Destiny players, myself included. I'm not saying I won't try it out, but I can't see myself dedicating the type of commitment to that model of a game. The fun of Destiny is character creation/build freedom, and as someone with over 200 raid clears, I'm more inclined to play PvE than PvP. I still enjoy it, but I wouldn't play a game that's really only PvP.

It’s easy to laugh at it but, if Anthem was revived and Sony bought the IP and dumped a huge budget into it, I’d bet anything it could be insanely successful. It had the single best “it factor”, that magical gameplay loop of all the looter games or supposedly destiny killers. It just never fully realized its insanely high potential.

They'll keep the lights on for Destiny as long as some people are still playing. They'll release Marathon as soon as it's playable. Then Sony will shut down Bungie as a game developer.
