LOOOOOL She definitely passes!!! I had NO idea she was trans before Destiny asked her. Also,it's weird to say that transwomen do not pass as a rule. Many do! Most probably don't. I think she's being overly self critical and this causes her to be 'tough with the truth' etc. Also not even actual women look like the ideal feminine creature 100%. I think the issue Taftaj is trying to communicate to destiny is demanding a world where trans women are truly seen as women is an impossible dream and when you set your goal so high, you are always bound to fail. No matter how many people say trans women are women when it comes to intercourse most people will still expect you to tell them you're trans beforehand. If this is the case, you will always be let down because you will never feel like a real woman.

That's a "Catch-22" being trans is a paradox that's why Taf brought up people REALLY need to address their mental illnesses. Yet this is something people been saying for YEARS. There's also just that even if you are passing, but never put yourself in that position, the only reason people view you as a woman is because they don't know otherwise. And I think anyone who is trans will be constantly aware of that, that's a source of dysphoria that will always be an obstacle. People _say_ "trans women are women", but that's never really a completely honest statement. Even the people who claim to believe it in the most literal sense know there are differences, otherwise transition surgeries wouldn't need to exist.

The thing I learnt that everyone struggles with is feeling or becoming or working towards becoming Authentic. Doing anything for inauthentic reasons do not make you feel good. you would think it would but when you achieve your goal you don't feel any better. For example weight loss. People lose weight but gain it back. Most of these people including myself set off with the mentality of,"This will make me feel better." But once you achieve your goal you don't feel better. You feel exactly the same as you did before. Things around you might have changed but in your head you have not. I came to realize it's because the reason we set out to achieve this goal was for a inauthentic or wrong reason. We didn't do it for ourselves we did it for others or what we perceive others wanted from us, rather than doing it for ourselves. What we needed to do was find our own reason not someone elses reason for this goal that should of been ours.

I think the issue with pronoun sharing is really that it was made bigger than it ever needed to be. As a trans woman who had to wait to transition…I can’t just show up with a new name looking like the opposite gender one day and even if I could people would have a lot of questions and those close to me would still have to adjust the way they view and address me. But I don’t need clearly cis people reminding others to address them as they way they present. You already give the appropriate social signals.

99%? If someone passes, then you will only know they're trans if you're told. Many people equate "passing" to looking conventionally attractive, and while being attractive helps with life in general, it's not really what that word should mean, but there's probably a broader conversation about unrealistic beauty standards for women in there somewhere too. I know a lot of women who don't like to be around men in general because they feel they have to perform this hyper feminine caricature, and if you've ever been a girl on a girls trip, you know the level of hatred that exists for the girl who invites her boyfriend. As for her tweet, it's bait. It's pretty cringe to be that edgy and then act sweet and innocent about how people interpreted what you said. If she clarified that she was talking about her own transition, then she wouldn't have gotten the responses she did, and she knows that. I don't get why she's playing dumb.

I kind of get why destiny doesn’t like self id but also don’t get it. He’s said before that self id is a logical fallacy, that just because you say you are something doesn’t mean you are, which is true. But I’ve also heard people use the phrase “I identify as” to just mean “I am” before, like “I identify as an atheist” is synonymous with “I am an atheist”. And when they’re using that phrase “I identify as a women” all that means is “I am someone with a female gender identity” which you may disagree that they have or not, but it’s not a logical fallacy.
@andrewkuzik5008 Жыл бұрын
Well the issue is that people use self ID as justification for the claim “I am a woman.” So their argument sounds likes this: I am a woman because I self Identify as a woman. It seems pretty circular and not a good argument. For the atheist example, what makes someone an atheist isn’t only that they self ID as an atheist (this may be necessary but not sufficient to be an atheist). To be an atheist you would also probably need criteria that qualifies you as an atheist. Which would probably be some sort of belief in god not existing or an absence of belief in god. So going back to the Self ID for woman. Self ID isn’t enough it might a piece of being a woman but there needs to also be criteria for what a woman can be or cannot be as a category. Most trans debate hinge on what this criteria is. People usually fall into 3 camps, but there is a lot of overlap: biological, psychological, or sociological.
@matthewedwards8576 Жыл бұрын
@@andrewkuzik5008 If that is what they’re saying “I am a woman because I self identify as a woman” then I agree that it’s circular and not a good definition. But if that saying means what I’ve heard it more often to be, which is “I am someone who has a female gender identity” then it wouldn’t be circular. You might then get into a discussion about what that means. But to me it just seems like they’re saying “I am a woman” but in a different way, with the more nuanced implication of gender identity attached.

i saw podcast recently about humanoid robots and the dude explained that the closer the robot looks like a human, the weirder and untrustworthy it looks to the eye of a human, its a graph of the uncanny valley, where it crashes down to negative trust levels the moment the gap is at a critically close level of realism with some characteristics (like faceanimation not properly, weird robotic movements, ...) feeling off, those in consequence becoming such centers of attention that nothing else matters anymore. as a hetero dude i would argue it would feel the same for me in case of someone who transitioned who has obvious male traits, just like she said: "i feel like i can get to like 99% but never a 100%". ... but in her case ... i dont know, i cannot for the life of me not see a woman, for sure her main issue is how her mind is sort of enslaved to behaving accuratly, it sounds more like anxiety than anything, im a dude with low selfsesteem and ads, always feeling a lil alienated from society, even tho im quite popular and liked all around, for me it doesnt matter because i dont feel like i fit and im walking constantly on broken glass, wich in consequence also leads to a hyperfixation on the bodylanguage and voice of others and myself, im constantly judging, "do i stand straight"? "do i make too much or too less eyecontact?", "does she feel uncomfortable, or is it just me?", "am i talking to much? loud? do i sound interesting?" ... not sure if this relates but it felt like it.

While they have been studied in those cases, you can’t just take a study of a specific treatment applying to a very specific medical condition with specific dosages and timelines and then just assume that everything works to cleanly use that data to work on other treatment plans at different dosages and schedules.
@sweetnerevarr4169 Жыл бұрын
The best explanation of this I've heard was from Philosophy Tube in her video on social constructs. She gives an example something like this: a cashier who's unaccustomed to interacting with trans people might call the trans man in the grocery line "sir" but it's kinda obvious that they're doing it consciously to be polite despite perceiving that trans man as a woman. On the other hand, if that trans man clearly presents as a man (even if he doesn't "pass" under scrutiny) and the cashier is accustomed to interacting with trans people, they don't have to *try* to use the correct pronouns because their socially constructed category of "man" has expanded to include trans men. Anyone who has trans friends or interacts with trans people on a regular basis probably remembers when it "clicked" and they went from being polite to trans people (and having to try really hard to not misgender) to seeing and treating them as their gender without thinking about it. So the practical goal isn't a world where all trans people are always passing, or a world where we abolish gender and everyone wears pronoun nametags. It's more to create a society where we "meet in the middle": trans people match their gender expression with their experienced gender, and society expands its gender categories to include trans people.

@thomaswalmsley8959 Жыл бұрын
Because one is reporting how one "feels", and/or views the worlds, a subjective experience than isn't necessarily making an objective claim or pointing to and underlying phenomenon. A diagnosis is based on observation. It's studying phenomenon, even those reporting subjective experiences (usually that impact the set of people negatively), seeing how symptoms and experiences with those symptoms cluster together, carving out those symptoms from other symptoms and giving it a distinct lable, then a specific set of prescriptions based on that and what has been the most effective treatment for those symptoms for those clusters. That's the difference.

Body issues are not just trans issues, cis woman suffer from a lot of the same issues as Trans woman, the difference is now Trans woman are glorified for surgeries and Hormones while cis women are belittled for furthering and catering to unreasonable body standards. If we worked more on changing the idea of gendered standards(which effect everyone not just women) there would be real changes for Trans people.

Honestly I'm just going to say it, gendered standards are fine. Ordinary people don't think about this shit at all. It's only neurotic introverted people that get affected by gendered toys and bathrooms and whatnot

@Cameron Shane transitioning used to be an extremely serious medical procedure that was reserved for people where nothing else worked. Because it now became the symbol of a social movement, it was pushed to the front as a meaningful way to overcome your pain, become part of a community, and find "your true self." It boomed in "popularity " not because there had been a slow and steady build of people who had done it themselves 30 years ago and who had shared the pros and cons with young people, but because people who were still in the honeymoon phase themselves Stepping to to forefront and inspiring other people to do the same. In my own personal life, I know multiple that transitioned in the last 8 years that have either developed regret or for who problems they expected to be solved were not solved by medical transitioning. WE used people with mental difficulties as symbols for the next "Civil rights movement". We loved the drunken high of that righteous feeling. And it's going to be our fault when the hangover comes, for thousands of kids that have turned themselves into an intersex version of themselves that they dont want to be, with serious medical and psychological consequences. To be clear: none of this means that gender dysphoria is not real and that transitioning isn't extremely important for a small subset of people going through it now.

Taftaj has rightly pointed out that transition doesn’t actually magically make it all better. Even if you passed .destiny is cringe and the trans community is lying to you. And destiny doesn’t know any trans people in real life. Or he just lives in the south because here in seattle it’s pretty much the same as online. I know and work with lots of trans/non binary people. And if they are below the age of 23 they believe all the same stuff as the online groups. Maybe it’s different for older trans people who call themselves transexuals . Self ID is popular. Maybe it’s different in the Midwest or the south. But most workplaces here are extremely woke.
