I'm at the age I never buy tools that I need. I just buy tools that I want. I seem to have an iron deficiency. This is one of the best auction videos you have done yet. Someone needs to call the Machine Abuse authority and have them arrested for machine molestation. Thanks for bringing us along.

I too am at that age, gosh, it's fun! If you haven't already done so, buy your self a mag drill and bits up to 3 - 4 inches. A half inch hole in 3/8th plate no problem! Buy a metal cutting chop saw! Why did I have to wait so long for these things! I'm looking at $3,000 blue brand welders because I can!! LOL!! 😁

Good video Pete, I've an Atlas 618 for the last 25 years, it works wonders. It was a block of rust when I got it from a friends garage. Today it's complete with all the original parts, accessories and even a new quick shift post. And still the original motor.

@@Miner-49 That is true but often there are lots of people out their who do feel it worth while and its a shame to allow these things to considerably degrade just for the sake of a cover or selling them promptly when you decide they are not worth repairing. If you are selling them then you must consider they are worth something or why didnt you take them to the scrap dealer.

I wish I could have been at that auction, although my wife would have shot me because at those prices I would have bought a ton of stuff. I couldn't believe that the old power hacksaw went for only $5! It's worth more than that as yard art! I love auctions like that, much to the chagrin of my wife. I'm 73 years old and I don't need any more tools. However, I still want more tools! Keep these videos coming. . . . Chuck

Thirty years ago I bought a 'Craftsman Commercial' branded 12x36 with the underdrive cabinet from a local glass factory in town. It was new in the origninal crate, never used. I paid $200 cash. I was driving a Ford station wagon at the time and I brought it home in the back of the wagon Its been one of my favorite tools in the shop ever since. I've always wanted a smaller precision lathe too but everyone I found at auction so far went for nearly what they sold for new. I have that same cabinet that was under that lathe here, I bought the cabinet by itself for $10 at a local auction about 10 years ago. It was set up as a tooling cart between two machines in a pharmaceutical company's maintenance shop. Knowing what I do about the 6" version, and not seeing all the misc small parts with it and its condition, I likely would have bailed at around $150 or so, but may have gone higher if I didn't have a lathe.

I'm extremely interested in seeing what you do with the lathe and what it is capable of. I've had the Sears version if the same lathe for 30 years that I have a love/hate relationship with. I sometimes want to junk it and buy a new import, but I think the problem is my skill rather than the lathe. I do have a complete set of gears for it, but not much else in the way of accessories. I'll be eagerly wait for future videos, and to see what is in the cabinet!

I just bought a QC54 10in (I believe to be manufactured in early 1948) and I’m having trouble with the auto feed of the saddle, it works perfectly the length of the bed heading towards the tailstock end, but keeps getting stopped in roughly the same spot when running it towards the chuck. Just looking for some help troubleshooting the problem

I have never had this problem. Remember this machine is brand new to me. And I really haven’t used it yet. My machine uses the so-called double wall heavy duty apron. I did want to remove it, clean it and lubricate it, but probably will never get around to it. I did take one of these apart in another video I believe years ago. Try to find that video and watch it. I think the problem is in the clutch, but that’s just a guess. Pretty complicated compared to lightweight 9 inch machine.

Lyle that was a great auction. It is the most fun ive I've had at an auction since my Dad passed. Thanks for giving Tom and I top billing. I feel like a movie star,😂. You got the best deal of anyone at the sale when you bought the card cabinet. It was packed. Funny how a person gets complacent and doesn't look into all the nooks like you are supposed to. Auction rule #1. Looking forward to the cabinet opening video. Great video. I don't think you paid too much for that lathe. Yes some rust, but no one had dropped it and broken the castings.

Regarding the rusty drill chuck on the tail stock, I've had really good luck not only cleaning but freeing those up using a Vevor sonic cleaner following one of your de-rusting methods you've shown. Same for rusty lathe chucks. Even better results than Break-free and PB Blaster. I've actually de-rusted an entire SB lathe one piece at a time in the sonic cleaner.

I have a Craftsman 6 inch lath that was given to me as a Christmas present 60 years ago. The lathe is still in excellent condition and I use it from time to time on small pieces. The gear train has a small gear of about 18 or 20 teeth that recently broke. It has a weak spot at the keyway. I plan to make another of brass or steel with instruction by Tubalcain. Not sure how to make the opposing keyway bore. For tooling I have a KT Quick change tool post. Just like the big lathes but miniature. I think I paid more for that tooling than you paid for your lathe. I would never sell my lathe, priceless and far too handy.

Shame to see all those machines in such poor condition. Just a little question, how did you detach the lathe from the cabinet without access to inside the cabinet. I'm sure there would normally be bolts through the cabinet from the lathe feet.

The machine was fastened to the wood with lag screws. The wood was bolted to the cabinet. It was so wet that I was able to break it off of the cabinet.

You really did it with the cliff hanger, we are on pins and needles. You are looking very well, by the way.

I paid $150 for my Craftsman of this size! I've been having a ton of fun working on it and would love to see what you do with the gears!

I have that same Lath. Use it all the time. well worth the money if you use it "occasionally". I upgraded the motor with a reversing switch. I would have paid much more for the ENCO Milling Machine that you showed. I'm looking for a X-Y table of similar design for my Rusnok Mill. any info on where I might locate one?

Check out Winky’s Workshop from several months ago. He did a good job critiquing and improving an XY table for his drill press. Turned out very useful.

I would love to find another Rusnok mill table, I paid about $650 new for mine in 1979, I actually went to the Rusnok factory and met Mr. Rusnok then.

might be a number on face of lock on cabinet. If so, you can buy a key for not too much from locksmith or online. Can't wait to see what's inside! Good score!!!

Nice Hamilton Varimatic Sensitive Drill Press lying on its side on a pallet at 10:20. Both belt guards intact, but missing the table. Heavy and very accurate press.

I totally missed that even though I photographed it. I definitely would have bought it in preparation for one of my future videos. I am devastated that I did not buy that.

I bought a 6 inch Atlas 10 or 15 years ago for $50 from a couple of kids who were selling it for their landlord. No belt assembly, no lantern, no chuck. Very light surface rust. It looked unused, no wear on the ways. Sold it for $200 two weeks later. I also got a rough TH42 complete out of a barn in western PA maybe 20 years ago. Won it on Ebay for $21.50! That was my I don't really want it bid, LOL. Cost me $120 in food and fuel to go get it. Cast iron legs and everything. Wood was punky, lots of pigeon poop. Chuck was stuck on spindle, but after soaking in PB Blaster for 4 years, came off easy. Good luck with your project.

You ask about which lathe I would choose to take home. Being honest & living in England, none. There is a small round column milling machine & these are popular here. As it happens, I have recently purchased an unfinished Dore-Westbury milling machine & am about to start finishing building it. It was these far eastern round column milling machines that took the market away from the kit built Dore-Westbury. Don't worry, I have already re-designed the Mandrel & bearings. The outer quil & its outer casting are present, but the mandrel material is missing. As was the upper cross tube, for which I have already found a replacement. Both lead-screws are also missing. Not a problem as I have the British model maker's lathe, Myford ML7-R. It started out as an ordinary ML7 & now has a Mk1 super 7 head-stock & Mk2 clutch. Plus the latest saddle. An exceptional bed & me building it.
