That's funny - I did the exact thing with our dining table for the exact same reason. 😄 I chose to turn the straightened legs 45 degrees inwards and attached the old rails on the inner side of the legs. That gave me enough length to reuse the old rails again.

The timing of this video couldn’t have been better. I’ve been trying to find a design for a dining table to build for a while and sent my wife a picture of the original version of this yesterday, but we agreed that we didn’t want something quite as MCM. I was thinking I’d give it a try with a smaller angle on the legs, hoping for a more modern feel. Thanks for giving me the proof of concept!

The original skew angle lowers the effective height of the top when placed on the original legs. The new legs with square cuts, while shorter than the originals, would have approximately the same effective table top height since the full length is now utilized. The finished height difference would be negligible.
@woodwhisperer

Not negligible..about 1/2". Which was good because they wanted it a little taller anyway.

I like that to find the angle you found a perpendicular surface to stand the Itty bitty foot on instead of just putting the sliding bevel on the top and over the edge. 😂. I guess either works but as far as reference edges go the top and bottom of the legs are just 90° to the outside edge right?

Great project and a good one to show folks that you don't have to trash it and start all over. I have been starting to use Rubio for all my work and recently added a ceramic top coat to a piece that I was concerned about water stains (like a dining room table). No long term results yet, but am giving it a try. I just got tired of the orangey tint from my old standby of poly and the ease of application of the Rubio is amazing and if it gets a bit of a damaged spot, it is super simple to touch it up. Just wondered if you have tried the ceramic coatings???

3:29 Generally I will add a thin layer of glue to end grain and let it sit for a short while before doing a glue up (if it absolutely needs to hold well). That way the glue that soaks into the end grain clogs the grain from soaking up more glue from the other piece. Granted, I'm not gluing up harder woods (where this might matter less), so there's that...

3:20. It is always worth it. I do an initial thin coating of glue on the end grain and give it a couple hours to get pulled into the wood and dry enough to be a barrier. Then I do my glue up. It works. well. The wood starts breaking someplace other than the joint again. P.S. No loose tenon or other joinery required believe it or not. Even still I usually do a mortise and tenon. If not that, then a loose tenon or dowel.

In all likely hood, I believe what happened in the glue up around the dominos is the end grain has tubes in it which conduct water around the tree. These tubes can absorb glue and that explains the low bonding away from the dominos. The bonding near the dominos occurred because of glue squeeze out.

Great video! It's cool to see something changed to work opposed to getting rid of it and starting new. I wonder if something like the N3 nano finish that Blacktail Studio is selling now would have helped make the Rubio finish acceptable for daily wear and tear. I'm sure the new finish is fine but film finishes seem like more work in the long run when they eventually fail. Thanks for making great content!

Hey, Marc. How come you didn’t just square up the top 4” of the legs on the table saw, straight from the fence, like a reverse taper jig? Then your long rails wouldn’t need a mitre cut. Unless I’m missing something….
@karl_alan
@karl_alan Жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same. Seems like instead of all the angle finding & cutting, squaring up that angle for the top couple inches on the table saw, miter saw or band saw might make easier joinery.
@woodwhisperer

‘Net New Customer’ Projects… It is not the woodworking… it is always the finish that is always the expectations gap. This pain/gap is in many trades I think… I was reminded of this when my driveway was paved - and the small business concrete driveway co. owner spent more time aligning my expectations on the ‘finish’ of my basic no frills driveway then the shape etc. I did go with him however!

How do you manage to keep your table top completely flat? I recently made a table top 900x1300mm from ash, using 5 boards, I alternated the boards (happy/sad) the moisture content was 12%, I oiled it evenly on both sides, yet I bring it in from my workshop to my home and within days it’s cupped. To avoid the difficulty (??) of the angled ends on the long rails, could you cut the inside of the legs parallel to the outside at the top of the leg, just enough to cover the height of the rail? This should make it easier on mortising for the dowels or your dominos.
