Great to see Rotterdam in the chat, I think he was instrumental in bringing some much needed maturity to the casting scene in the early days (and also big supporter of the sc scene in general)

on the subject of macro, and rts game design: i always had the thought that you could make a game like starcraft much more immediate by having a phase at the start of the game where you have starting funds equivalent to say the first 2-3 minutes and place buildings instantly and just get the opening macro out of the way then once both players have done their "deployment phase" they hit the "ready" button or whatever and the game just picks up as usual. it would be a different game but it would keep a lot of diversity and the core macro elements still and also gets to the point faster

Its an interesting idea, obviously cheese becomes impossible but a more predictably macro game could be cool

this would cause a lot of "build order losses" as players wouldn't be able to respond to what the other is doing.

One of my favourite RTS's growing up was an old one, Siege (1992) that had no micro at all but was still fun. The armies and siege/defense equipment was decided on before the game, and in the game one side had to besiege a castle the other had to defend it. There was a lot more to the micro then in most modern RTS's due to the equimpment management aspect (destroying enemy equipment, the equipments carriers or rather thin out the enemy attack unit before it can fight and destroy the euipment after the troops are dispersed (Not an option for battering rams but for siege towers and latters). There are still a lot of things to do with the genre, so I'm always happy when an RTS isn't just a modernised Dune 2 clone like Command and Conqer or Warcraft/Starcraft. Though these ar fun too of course. I'm especially fond of the fact that They are billions does have a little bit of Siege in it as the Zombie side is also an army with predetermined numbers that besiege the enemy settlement.

Thats why I still play Settlers2 (10th anniversary version). I'm not even sure if it qualifies as rts but it's all macro and building a good economy and then some fighting. Or just chill in freeplay mode.

My theory of rts is that skill is generally four categories: micro (in combat unit movement), macro (micro but for resource gathering, tech, base building), positioning (where the army is outside of incombat fights, army engagement is a mixture of micro and positioning), and decision making (self explanatory). The lines can blur between them. Winning because of better decisions and macro is outsmarting the opponent while winning because of micro is more just clicking the mouse and keyboard better.

I couldn’t pick which one I would be worse at... XD I can be pretty good at games where I need to focus one one thing (moba/fps/tps) but rts (however much I love them) confuses me, because of all the things one needs to pay attention to. 😂 well, not for me.

The last sentence in my opinion is oversimplifying the matter. When you micro your units you have to do lots of decision making as well. Many more than when making strategic decisions (do I expand, turtle up or put pressure on my opponent?). Strategic decision making means that you have to consider quite some variables like what your opponent is doing and what your own situation looks like to come to a conclusion. But it is a single conclusion at that time and you also take some time for it. Micro is the exact opposite. You have to make many decisions within short periods of time, all of which are not as complex as strategic decisions but they make up for that in sheer quantity. I do agree though, that being fast at clicking is way more important when making unit micro decisions.

Starcraft needs random generated larger and open maps, with random spawn of resources, no more locked in bases with predefined resource. Just like AoE. That will pump out the macro game hard, because if you can't do it, you will lose quickly.

I have no idea how many games you need to actually get ranked in GM, NO CLUE.... however, I have a fun "challenge idea" ..... "Clones to GM" where you make Marc1, get ranked as GM, make Marc2, get ranked to GM, etc. Might not be possible, but it would be funny to see the GM leaderboard with a bunch of Marcs
