When I was a kid I did "experiments" with electrical components that easily could have been the end of me. I survived . I now design and build high powered diesel electric generators. One time when I was about 12 we paralleled eight CRTs (picture tubes) to create enough capacitance to fire a ruby laser. (Successfully) This was in 1968. The amount of power stored in that CRT bank was awesome. And deadly. Even small capacitors can store enough power to be dangerous. Sometimes for really long periods of time. Make sure capacitors are discharged before handling. Failure to do so may not end well. Antique electronics can hold some very powerful and unpleasant surprises for the unwary. Enen if not powered up for years.

I got a shock from the same flash capacitor circuit he was using, in the exact same way (touching ground with one hand and power with the other), and was convinced that I'd need to see a doctor (anxiety does wonders for this), but then I calculated the current (350 volts / 50k ohms) and it was definitely less than 7 milliamps, probably more like 4 as I used the absolute lower bound for human body resistance, which equates to "mild sensation". It's actually worse than that. A GOOD AC to DC converter first uses a FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER to make the power go always on the same direction, but the signal that comes from it is basically the AC signal but with the lows flipped up, so you have to use a good capacitor to filter out and deliver a good, constant 5v. @brisingreragon955 жыл бұрын
Basically, any radio emitter could be called an emp, we're just messing with the signal before...
@mfbfreak5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, pretty much. They quickly tried to get away from the ringing pulse, to a continuous wave because of the amount of frequencies contained in the pulse. That makes one spark telegraphy signal take up the space of 100 continuous wave telegraph signals.
@Mostlyharmless19855 жыл бұрын
Brisingr eragon I mean yes but no. It’s conceivable that a carrier wave could induce a voltage in electronics but it’s more likely it would resonate at a set voltage. It takes a short pulse of broad spectrum to get massive induction spikes and other craziness that would cause electronics to go haywire.
@gnarthdarkanen74645 жыл бұрын
@@Mostlyharmless1985 That depends on exactly how you define "go haywire"... and the extent is just as determined by power available as the rest of the model... In regards to strictly "interference", though, eragon's got a sound principle. Think about Ham radios, and CB's... In "normal" operations, they're assigned specific channels (frequency bands)... AND as long as everyone's playing approximately by the same rules, sticking to those channels will do the job of communicating and functioning normally with no interference... BUT around here, there's a LOT of iron in the ground, and mountains everywhere... SO a popular "trick" among radio amateurs is "Power dumping"... where-in, one custom builds a basic power amplifier, and wires it directly between the radio and the antenna. A robust build with a single fuse-able circuit in the house can add (120VAC @ 15A "fuse") 1800Watts-ish to broadcast strength as well as reception "boost"... BUT there's a side-effect to poorly planned or positioned amplifiers called "bleed-over", where errant signals and segments of communication literally slip into channels outside the designation on the radio-set dial (even a digital). Add enough to the "power dump" amplifier in principle, and you can cause all manners of chatter and noise to a variety of "nearby" bands, and if we're honest, 15A is relatively small in circuit protections common to code... It's worth note that (even here) this practice is illegal. It can result in fines, jail time, and obviously equipment either taken or destroyed by authorities. It's finally just worth mention, that while none of it would be very effective maliciously, it's enough to be worth some dubious cautions about cell phones and other transcommunications on aircraft, where steady communication with ATC and other craft is a high SAFETY priority. (where the obligatory requests to turn off phones and tablets comes from). ;o)

Fun fact, loud music playing neighbors speakers are rather susceptible to EMP. Especially if you are willing to spend weeks winding thin copper wire around an iron core and attaching it to several dozen modified electric car batteries for a single use EMP. There may or may not be a lump of metal in my garage that looks like a melted copper and iron lump of metal. Just be careful of the car batteries, they will light on fire and possibly explode as well...

Thanks!!! As an electronic repair business, I found my mobile EMP device to be absolutely essential in helping my business thrive. While mine is much larger than yours and runs off it's own generator and is the size of a horse trailer, it is essentially the same!! I just drive from neighborhood to neighborhood, and wait for the calls to come in. Thanks so much! Stole this off another post 🤡

I remember seeing small handled EMP device used to force cheap badly designed fingerprint or code lock system to reset, and the lock will open during its initialization
@GronTheMighty5 жыл бұрын
A surprising amount of electronic door security systems are also vulnerable to the simple wooly socks plus finger combo attack. They look fancy and effective though, which is the main point most of the time; dissuasion of attempts of intrusion being more important than prevention :p
