DETAILED Comparison of a C6 Corvette ZR1 & C7 Z06 Corvette! Who WINS?

Hello everyone and welcome back to Brink of Speed!
Today I'm very excited to bring you an in-depth look at all the differences between the C6 ZR1 & C7 Z06 Corvette's! I've traveled to Corvette World in Dallas to drive one of their C6 ZR1's and will be taking Rob along with me as usual.
Starting with the looks on the outside of this car, I love them very much, as they have a clean sleek look and design to them! GM used carbon fiber everywhere on this exterior which was a very nice touch, from the front splitter to the side skirts & the roof, even the whole hood is carbon fiber! One of my favorite parts about this ZR1 is the fact that it has a clear window in the hood so that you can see the menacing LS9 Supercharged V8 doing its thing!
Moving on, the initial startup is nice but, then the car quiets down predominately until you mash the gas and the dual chambers open up allowing you to finally hear the roar of the big V8 engine! This I found to be very disappointing, at least with my C7 Z06, I can make it stay on load mode as much or as little as I want to.
The acceleration in this ZR1 was also a little disappointing also. The initial throttle response wasn't there like I'm used to in my C7 Z06. It did, however, feel like once it started to go, there was no holding it back! I definitely believe that this C6 Corvette ZR1 could easily hit 205mph!
The ride in this car was definitely lacking comfort big time, which was pretty surprising, taking into account that this car has a MAG ride suspension, I figured it would ride much more smoothly. It did feel like it would handle well on a track but, again I was disappointed with the steering input from the wheel, it gave me zero feel and feedback. I did, however, love the brakes in this ZR1, as they are huge carbon ceramics, they have huge stopping power!
The interior was also leaving a lot to be desired but, this was expected because, in my opinion, GM didn't get the interior correct until the C7. Going back to the steering wheel, I just feel like it is so cheap looking and it reminds me of a Chevy Cavalier steering wheel. The seats are also very unimpressive, they don't feel comfortable at all and have zero support. The technology isn't there either compared to the C7 and once you get used to that, it makes it very hard to drive something without it.
I do love the fact that it only comes with a 6-speed manual transmission though and this makes this ZR1 much more fun to drive than my 8-speed auto. No doubt about it, this 2010 Corvette ZR1 was a blast to drive! Would I want one over my Z06, absolutely not but, would I own one alongside my C7, sure if I had the money, why wouldn't I.
My conclusion is, if you are truly trying to decide between buying a C6 ZR1 & C7 Z06, go drive them both, the decision will be easy, C7 will win that battle every time hands down!

C6 ZR1 owner here. 2009 24k miles... I'm biased as I've never driven a C7 but the C6 ZR1 is an animal... and it's my favorite kind of animal.

Both great cars. Comes down to personal preference. I was in the market for both. I went with the zr1 because it was a more raw drivers experience. No match when it comes to interior comfort and refinement. But the Zr1 had that special touch...hard to explain. All the carbon fiber, standard carbon ceramics. Biggest thing was I'd see the C7Z everywhere, almost never saw the Zr1. With only 4500 made over 5 years there sure to be a future collectible.

I owned a C7 Z06 and now have a 2011 ZR 1 and I definitely prefer the ZR1! Shifts smoother, I love the smooth supercharger. It is a driver’s car.

Depends on Mileage, year and Trim level. 2015 and 16 1LZ or 2LZ over 15k miles to 35k miles run in the Mid $50's to low 60's. 2009-11 ZR1 under 30k Miles run around the same.

You don’t want to go with an earlier year model C7 ZO6 such as 15 and 16’s due to cooling issues. GM fixed the issue for 17 years and above.

Fantastic video, Mike! I have a C7 Z06 with 680 RWHP via stage three from Vengeance, and I love it. Will be keeping it forever, but also have my name on the list for a C8 Stingray and C8 Z06. I have wanted one of these ZR1s since the day I first saw one. Like you, I opted for the C7 Z, and have no regrets. As much as I would still love to have a C6 ZR1, I now think I may perhaps be disappointed if I were to drive it and compare it to my C7. I am spoiled! I bought my C7 Z new in ‘16 with 4 miles on it from Bomnin in Miami. Sticker was 96.8 and I got it for 77.5, so I got a great deal. The video was so informative and has tamped me down on the desire for a C6 ZR1 and I am very appreciative for it. Mike, as always, great content and great video! Thanks for doing this and posting it!

I test drove a 2013 C6 ZR1 when I had my 2013 427 Convertible and C5Z and it was amazing! The steering wheel and seats are way better than the earlier models! They lost the sale because they wouldn’t replace the tires. I’m glad it work out that way, because I purchased my C7Z instead. The car is completely different. Now, I wouldn’t replace my C7Z with a C6 ZR1, but I would add one to the stable.

I remember my first encounter with the C6 ZR1. Besides a '94 C4 Zr1 we had in College for the GM automotive program, the C6 ZR1 was the one I was following since its Blue Devil moniker. Then finally in '09 there it was. I was a skinny kid working in the Chevy dealer service and a doctor had recently roasted his tires on his Gun Metal ZR1. I replaced them and I got the privilege to go for a ride in it. That thing was a weapon. Fastest car I've ever been in til this day. Made that kid happy that day. 😎

Another great upload Mike. Love the first 1:15 intro! There's a mag ride software upgrade from Jim Mero who will be at Corvettes at Carlisle. Robert is correct in that the seats in Corvette for '12 and '13 were much improved and I believe the steering wheel was also smaller. The PDI Track Package mentioned, was it just tires? So the net result of your review is that you don't want to go back to the future. 😊 Save the Wave.

Ill agree with almost everything Richard had to say less that the C7Z took the C6ZR and made it better. They are simply different cars with different feel. If the C7Z was to be an improvement in simply numbers, they would have used a bigger blower and better cooling. I chose a C6Z for the raw feel of the LS7. Hell, I still cant outdrive it lol. (Btw, the comment about being a beast in second gear is spot on for those who have never driven a C6Z or ZR).

C6Z owner here and love her. I just wish the C6ZR1 had a more aggressive front bumper clip and air ducting design vs same as used on the ZO6. Thanks for posting. Definitely better daily and long distance cruiser C7ZO6 (mainly due to interior/seats)…more personality and pure corvette soul C6 Z cars are the pinnacle IMO although I haven’t driven the flat crank spin monster C8ZO6. This new one may be the new pinnacle combing the souls of the C6Z and blended the creature comforts of the C7Z cars. How Robs C4 doing?

Another thing that might explain the C6 ZR1 being faster than the C7 Z06 over 150 mph is that to my understanding, when the 638 hp rating was given they picked the worst performing example out of a batch of LS9 engines. So it is possible that the C6 ZR1 is making as much or more hp than the C7 Z06 on average.

Some Dude This is probably true but either way, the C7 has much more downforce and drag and it’s geared different also. You could tell that the ZR1 was going to be really fast in 5th & 6th.

Corvette World Rob I read about it in car and driver or motor trend when they interviewed on of the GM engineers. I remember reading a similar thing being said about the LS3s that went into the C6 grand Sport models as they were coming off the same line as the LS7s.

The Z06 C7 has heat soak while the C6 ZR1 doesn’t. I have a C7 Z06 A8 which doesn’t over heat on the street. But on a track the C6 ZR1 wins because Z06 will over heat.

I have enough to pay either one off as I’m looking. I’ll probably go with the older zr1 cause it’s just so nice all around I never liked the rear on the c7s and couldn’t get used it. Looks to much camaroish to me. The rear end switched me to the round taillights and better resale the zr1 will be as not a lot where made.

hmmm, didnt notice throttle lag in my c6zr1? zr1 c6 vs c7 zo6 , head to head, all things equal with a stick, zr1 pulls all day long. Cant touch the Ls9 and the building it , small mods blow this thing up compared to the z06

Given that C7 Z06 and C6 ZR1 are the same price these days, I think the market has spoken on ZR1s. There's something special and raw about them that the C7 Z06 doesn't have. That, or the C7 styling just isn't holding up like the C6.

U missed the part that the C6 ZR1 has CF front fenders , roof and halo too. The gearings on the C6 ZR1 vs the C7 Z06 M7 is very identical , the 7th on the Z06 is just gas savers but the 1-6 is almost identical .. the reason why the Z06 is slower on the higher speed compared to the ZR1 is bec of the drag , that’s it, even on the stage 1 aero it still has more drag than then ZR1 by far... and no the Z06 won’t do 205 like the ZR1 , try 195 at best

Casino 88 Actually in the C6, the mag ride settings do not affect throttle response at all. I test it out and it was exactly the same in sport mode. I’m not just a C7 fan boy, I’m a technology and refinement fan. Sorry but the C6 just doesn’t have any of that compared to the C7. Let’s not forget that I owned a C6 Z06 for a couple of years and loved it until I got into the C7 Z06.

C6 ZR1 is better than c7 Z06 all day and this brink of speed guy is a clown for buying the wrong car. C7 z06’s are already cheaper than c6 ZR1’s lol. C7 Z06 will never have the prestige or be worth as much as a c6 ZR1.

I test drove a 2010 ZR1 from this same dealer a year or so ago. I found the throttle response to have a lag in it compared to my C6 Z06, which has 526rwhp. I like the responsiveness of the N/A 427. But the ZR1 pulled hard once the rpm got up in to the range of the super charger. However, I think my car feels faster. The ZR1 does have a great modding platform and I have a friend who now as over 700rwhp in his ZR1. I have not been inside or driven a C7 Z, but in all the videos I watched, it has a lot of low end grunt, but it doesn't pull as hard up top and falls flat. The C7 Z would get the C6 ZR1 off the line, but up top the ZR1 would pass it, but it might not happened until 120+-. If it comes down to a looks contest, in my opinion, the C6 ZR1 hands down.

7:22 GM scared of lawsuits. Yet they have issues with z06 over heating, and cracked rims on GS, Z06, and Zr1. Not to mention the rear quarter panels getting a sand blasted look over time. It would be very rare to see these cars go over 200 mph. Here in the US there's just TOO much traffic and cops.. Unless it's on the autobahn in germany then that is a different story.
