THIS WORKS!!! Thanks for the video. I had never soldered anything before, but even I was able to fix mine in about 20 minutes. One tip I could share would be don't overheat the ends of the resistors, or they will come right off..... and they are tiny! I was able to re-position it with tweezers, and redo it, and it still worked like a charm.

Just fixed mine today, had the truck a few years and never noticed it was there until recently installing a stereo with a flash light, looked up and I saw the dark screen behind the tinted plastic. Took it apart to see if it was something obvious but looked good. Jumped on google and found your fix, took a closer look and sure enough those 510 resisters needed soldered. Had everything needed to touch them up and now its back in action. Old plastic was braking so I used the same soldering iron and a zip tie plastic to plastic weld the broken bits that the unit mounts to all back in place. Loved the video, thanks man, stay jazzed up, praise God!

I bought an 03 and bothers me the temp/compass not working.. found your video and tried the repair another way. I found the 2 510 relays very tiny and tried just rubbing / smearing the existing solder joints with the dull side of the tip of a razor blade thinking it would smear the welds to work. Working 3 weeks now. My solder iron was too big so tried it another way before buying the pen solderer and it works. Thanks for the video!

Well, mine has not been working for years now. Years ago I took it to my local mechanic and they told me that it would be a couple hundred dollars to replace it, so I just let it be broken. I did what you said and I just added solder to the first one furthest to the left and didn't touch any of the others and it seems to have fixed the problem. All of them looked good to begin with, but I just started with that one and popped it back in an it started working. Thank you very much!

I fixed it! I'll have to admit though, my first attempt to solder the first 510 resistor was U-G-L-Y. It came off too, completely. I thought it was over at that point but I childishly soldered it back. I only did the first 510 due to my horrible soldering job. Was afraid to touch anything else until I saw if that may have fixed it or killed it entirely. Plugged it back in and it WORKED. Thanks for the video and comments. $14.00 for soldering iron and solder from O'Reilly's Auto Parts and a few minutes - saved me $45 for a replacement.

I had the same issue with a 02 F150 I bought used. here is another tip after I fixed the exact same resistor doing the exact same thing it read negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit and Celsius. if yours ever stays stuck on -40f and you press the button and it say -40c look on the front of your AC condenser behind the grill where the hood latch sets right up under there is a Ambient Air Temperature Sensor and mine was missing so I went to a parts store and paid about 20 bucks and plugged in a brand new one and lo and behold the correct temperature appears on the the correct temperature appears on the unit. if you unplug this and there is no temperature sensor plugged in your unit will read negative 40 degrees and the word ice will appear. basically like a clock that has not been set flashing 12:00. if it doesn't pick up that sensor behind your grill that's what the thermometer will do and also some of these F150 and expeditions came with automatic climate control to the AC system and doing some research has shown that if you have the digital automatic climate control this same sensor is used for the air conditioning and heating system to work properly and measure the outside temperature. also the compass may need to be calibrated. to put the compass in calibration mode hold down the big black button and you should see a number come up and VAR and Google a magnetic zone map to find out which zone number your state is in which should be like 1 through 14 in the United States you want to keep pressing the black button to set the zone you're in. and then once you select the correct number for the area you're in wait a few seconds and CAL should show up on the display and make sure your vehicle is in a safe area where you can slowly Drive about 3mph in a complete circle he may need to drive 360 degrees once or twice in a circle about 3mph and eventually CAL should go away and the compass should work correctly. also be careful when removing the unit with the front screw. it can easily break if forgotten and you will have to spend about 70-100 bucks on ebay and most of the time the 510 resistor is loose and just about any of them you will buy but just the console alone will cost a bit. also the mounting of the display holds the door to the sunglass holder in place and if the display is not secured correctly the sunglass compartment door will fall out. just figured I would put that info out there as a lot of these videos are not covering this. even the 1A Auto video just shows how to install the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor but doesn't explain that it has anything to do with this display. I bet there's quite a few people out there with their Ford displaying -40 degrees and some people can't figure out why well this is what happens when that sensor is not connected or potentially getting a good connection. A $20 part that can be picked up at a parts store

@@TheChaztor Really old answer but it's not for homelink. Homelink is on your visor. That rear part is for a garage door opener if you don't have homelink. You stick it in there and it depresses the button. I use it to store my badge and credentials. I've seen others hollow it out and install multiple random things in there from EQ's to TV screens.

Just repaired my 2001. The solder on those resistors was so sparse and brittle that one of the little things popped completely off as soon as I touched it. The original solder was a brownish color as if it had corroded. I used a fiberglass sanding pen to clean off the corrosion, a few dabs from a no-clean flux pen (just like in the video), and some proper leaded solder on both contacts of all five of those resistors. Easy peasy. I've got the same problem with the odometer but I haven't worked up the nerve to take the dash apart yet. 😊

Dude! Stumbled across your video and decided to take a look because my compass in my 03' F150 has not worked for at least 6 yrs. Thought about going to a salvage yard to get one but decided to just let it ride because I never really used it anyway with the modern day conveniences of Google Maps app on our phones. When I saw this video I said what the heck, I'll take a look and see if this was what was ailing mine. Sure enough, it was the same 510 resistor. Only difference was my unit only had compass on the display because my external thermometer is built into the AC control panel so that particular resistor must have something to do with powering the board. Great Job Bud! PS. I have 336k miles on my truck and for the past 2 years I have been getting a tone warning that tones 5 times in a sequence of 5 times upon every start up and then again every 30 mins of operation. Have you ever had this issue?

Awesome you got it fixed. As for the 5 x 5 warning tone, that sounds like your air bag bulb in your instrument cluster is burned out. I've never had to fix that one but here is some instructions I found some forums. (Note: that after your replace this lamp. It may start blinking a code to you on start up. That code will be something else wrong in the airbag system so you will have to research that code. Usually something you can fix yourself as well. ) [Instructions below are from a forum post located here: www.ford-trucks.com/forums/807448-5-beeps-5-times.html] Remove the radio (get a Ford radio removal tool at WalMart) then carefully remove the dash cowling - no tools use your fingers as they are all snap connectors, Remove the instrument cluster with a 9/32 socket, disconnect the 3 wire harnesses plugged in back. flip the cluster upside down, you remove the lights from the backside, DON'T try to peel up the instrumentation graphics. Notice the location of the airbag lamp, take a 9/32 socket and gently turn the lamp holder a 1/8 turn counter-clockwise, and the holder should pop-out. Easier said then done, you will notice that it is the hardest lamp to get to. Get a replacement bulb at any auto parts store (the bulb pulls out of the holder, you do not need to buy the entire unit from Ford). replace, reinstall the panel, dash and radio and start your truck. No beeps!!!
