Mr. Watkins: I have also been building band saw boxes for about 6 months now since I came across the guitar you have made. I liked it. After I built a box to get the basics down I built a guitar box except my design of this box is the guitar is in a standing position and I installed a clock. I like to thank you for your time and efforts you have given in your projects.

Great video, Dave. I learned so much. Thanks.... However, I used a 3/16 10tpi blade, but it burned the wood along the cuts. I was cutting walnut with plywood in the center.(2 3/4's of walnut and 2 3/4 plywood) I did not force it . I cut slowly. Any thoughts as to what I did wrong? Thanks for your time.
@designerwoods9 жыл бұрын
I don't know for sure, but burning generally happens when I cut too slow or when the blade is getting dull. My first step would be to try a new blade.

Hi Dave great video, however when you cut out the drawer for the box you cut thru the wall at the bottom and did not seem to address what to do with that cut. did you glue it shut and did it leave a mark on the box later? I remember something about you sanding it but didn't really understand if there was a mark left there from cutting. otherwise great video and enjoyed all the other details. you sure love your work as it shows!!
@designerwoods10 жыл бұрын
I generally always round over the edges of the cut and then glue it shut, especially if it will strengthen the box. Gluing the saw kerf shut will change the shape of the box slightly. Generally that will not make any difference, If, however, you are making a fairly complex pattern such as my locomotive, gluing those opening will change the shape enough that the back will not fit back on properly. In that case i leave the entry cuts open. Hope that helps Dave

@designerwoods10 жыл бұрын
On all my larger boxes, I sand the inside of the box with a spindle sander before I put the back on. The small ring or trinket boxes I generally do not sand the inside of the box, except by hand to knock down the raised grain.

hey Dave I have a pretty inexpensive full boar band saw will that reduce the quality of my boxes when I make them?
@designerwoods10 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by "full boar" , but I would say that as long as it will cut fairly strait, it should be fine. A little unevenness can always be sanded out.
@michaelciccone10 жыл бұрын

itonist584 I checked the web site and I don't see why the band saw you have shouldn't work just fine. I think with a good blade, properly adjusted, you should be able to make some real nice boxes. I cannot tell what size blade you use, but it looks like a 1/8" blade. Does this size blade leave the inside of the bandsaw boxes that smooth that no sanding is necessary?
@designerwoods6 жыл бұрын
I use a 3/16" - 10 tooth blade for most of my cutting. It generally leaves a good smooth cut. I do however, sand the inside of the drawer opening on my larger boxes. The small single drawer trinket boxes I do not sand inside.

do you still have blocks for sale? if so what kind of size range is offered on what you send?
@designerwoods7 жыл бұрын
Hi Travis The sizes of the blocks vary some. Here is a link to a blog article the describes the blocks. designer-woods.com/blog-articles/hardwood-blocks-for-small-band-saw-boxes/ I sell the small blocks 2 for 1$ plus shipping. Tell me how many you want and I will send you a bill thru Pay Pal. Since they are heavy, I've found that the best way to ship them is by the post office flat rate box. The large $19 box will hold about 30 blocks so that would be $34. The medium $14 box will hold about 20 blocks for a total of $24. If you are interested, I will need your e-mail address to bill you and your mailing address to ship the blocks. If you just want a few, I will weigh them and get you a price. Thanks Dave

I thought you video was great. Good detail and what is required. What I would like to know is what tools and clamps your used. Also, I noted that you build lots of boxes. What is your market and can you, or will you, provide something about the pricing you charge. Thanks. In Christ, Tom
@designerwoods4 жыл бұрын
Most all cutting is done with a band saw. As far as clamps, I use a variety of sizes and put a piece of scrap particle board between the clamp and the box to protect the wood. I have a lot of small Bessie clamps that are not great quality and tend to fall apart over time, but they are a handy size and as long as I protect the wood they work great. I have sold a lot of boxes over the years at art and craft shows and some over the internet. Here is a link to my Etsy store that will give you the prices for the different boxes. Good luck Dave

@cliffcarlo1807 жыл бұрын
Hi, Dave. Do you glue the outer frame back together where the first saw cut went in?
@designerwoods7 жыл бұрын
Hi Cliff. It depends on the box. On the small trinket boxes that I show in the video, I generally do not glue the entry point. They are generally pretty stable without gluing them. Most of my larger boxes however, I do glue the opening for that first cut if I think it will make the box stronger.
@cliffcarlo1807 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave. Thanks for your reply. Yes that does indeed make a lot of sense to me to do it that way. I was struggling a little to make the tight curves on the smaller boxes, then a buddy of mine pointed out that my blade is 3/8" and I should get the smaller 1/4" to make things a bit easier. You wouldn't think that 1/8" would make that much difference but he promises me that it will. Ordered a 1/4" just now so looking for to fitting it on arrival and seeing if I can do any better. Cheers again Dave.
@designerwoods7 жыл бұрын
Hi Again That 1/8" does make a big difference. I go even smaller for most of my cutting. I use a 3/16" 10 tooth blade to cut out my boxes and a 1/4" to take the back off the box. If the corner is still too tight, try cutting up to the corner and then back the blade out and come in again from the opposite direction. Have fun Dave
@cliffcarlo1807 жыл бұрын
Hi there Dave I just got off the phone with the company I purchased the bandsaw from and the smallest for this saw is 1/4". I will certainly take your advice with regards to backing out and coming in the opposite direction. Thanks again for getting back, really appreciated.
