Comment 11. So glad I was guided to you. I picked card 1. I'm 65 soon and I've wanted to leave my husband for most of my marriage of 36 years, but always stayed "for the children". Well the children are in their 30s now, and I'm afraid to hurt husband (who has abused me many times) and hurt our finances, as they are meshed together. I know I have to make the move some day. I might jump into the end of life Doula space before there’s worldwide regulation on that. I’m sure whatever it is that I should choose is right in front of me. I wouldn’t call myself anything but I find that creates a lot of confusion, too. It’s like a question of what can we expect from you. It doesn’t quite do to answer it with “anything what would you like?”

I keep trying to put out a shingle. I’m trying to name myself after something that’s uncolonized and unregulated. For a while, I called myself a shaman. I figured there’s no worldwide Association of shamans to complain. Any real shaman would not mind testing me. That’s the only way we could figure out if we were both legit. And it’s a valid way. But sure enough the anthropologists of which I’m one have an opinion on what is and isn’t a legitimate shaman. So in comes someone from the peanut gallery who’s read some books and decides that i’m not real because I haven’t been through a sickness. Meanwhile she knows I’ve been through a level of hell in another vector, a level which most people would not survive and I came out of it not hating everyone. It’s not that I care what I’m called. But I’m trying to address the faces with the confusion, the peanut gallery again. I set aside “shaman”. I thought about “civilization engineer”. Queen of Ghosts. Meddling mama? I’m trying to teach Self Defence. Ok great. But then I get a contract and it’s for group fitness. But fitness is colonized and also there’s plenty of fitness instructors. You’re supposed to get a certificate or a badge or some training. You can’t call yourself a yoga teacher unless you had your 200 hours. (I am a dancer which means I’ve done tonnes of yoga. There are actually three yoga dances which I am more than qualified to teach without 200 hours.) so then they try and put the Self Defence under martial arts. OK it’s not unrelated but it’s a different skill. For the most part, martial arts helps you best an opponent that’s almost equal to you in a context that has a fair number of rules and some sensei in charge to enforce them. It’s more ritualistic and it’s more of a fight between equals where you win not by overcoming your opponent any way any how but by having superior style. (I studied martial arts too). Self Defence is from David and Goliath, an unequal match and one where your opponent not only seeks your total destruction in many cases but chooses you as an opponent because of your perceived weakness and vulnerability. There’s no way for me to stand in and uncolonized space without resistance from the peanut gallery. I have to put up with some resistance, some confused faces. So finally I asked the contractor giver if she would code a ballet teacher under group fitness. I told her that I guarantee you that ballet instructor does not think they’re doing fitness. They’re doing ballet. B A L L E T. Know what I mean jellybean?! 🤣🤦‍♀️🤗
