The devil is in the details, and dialing in the details is exactly where we’re at with our 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z. On this installment of IROC REHAB, we tackle the final tuning of our Edelbrock small block via a trick Bluetooth tablet. We mount some new wheels and tires, and then the experts from Griots Garage show up to breathe some new life back into the IROCs 35-year-old paint.
From there, Gabe Flores of Classic Industries joins us to help further beautify the Camaro by showing us some great offerings from their catalog. Finally, we take it in for a proper wheel alignment in anticipation of a full road test and review, and in the process, meet one of of the raddest technicians in the Northeast.

WTF is it with everyone calling IROC’s mullet mobiles? I owned a yellow one for over a decade. Owned many Foxbody stangs and have 3 currently. Never met anyone with a mullet in an IROC only mustangs 😉. Mind you I was rolling in the IROC, 86 5.0 coupe, and a 87 Buick T Type. Fox for the sound, IROC for turns and Buick for luxury and handing out Gapology degrees to all😂 Just busting ur chops! Great job on the IROC. Black n Gold 2nd best combo behind yellow n gold!

Aahhh the good old days! My brother had an 86 hardtop that he put a 350 vette motor in….auto tranny would light the tires up from a stand still. Not a fan of going from silver pin strips to gold but who cares at this point, you brought her back to life that all that matters. Thanks to my brothers love of Camaros I bought myself a 00 SS which now I guess I can say “back in the day” (life goes by in a flash) still have her she’s a driver….LS6 motor, strange 12 bolt stage 3 clutch original tranny…..she’s my baby and my kids love to go for rides with the t tops off…..long live the Camaros since they are getting the axe….again…

@jeremycribb4696 Жыл бұрын
87 was kind of a unicorn of sorts. As previously mentioned the 350 made a return, when properly optioned the 145 speedo, which started back in 86, most were 115. The 87 was actually a z28 and the Iroc was an additional choice, whereas in 88 z28 dropped in favor of just Iroc. Little details separate the differences in Iroc cars: 85-87 one line wheels and decals at front of doors, badges say z28 in ground effects and bumper. The 88-90 cars have two line wheels and decals at rear of the doors, badges say Iroc in the ground effects and bumper. 90 Iroc is more rare as it was last year offered, those carry a heavy price tag still, gauge cluster changed is most recognizable difference which carries through the last year of the generation in 1992. 1991 and 1992 are z28 or RS, 92 offered a 25th anniversary edition.
@Aceman597

Those wheels are looking really nice, but yes, you need to lower the car to get that look. I don't know how the roads look like there, but where I live I would have some clearance issues :D I've tried 17 wheels too, but with new factory height, it looks stupid, so I'm on the hunt for a set of original 16s, but they got pricey and you didn't count the shipping to Europe :) For the rest, I hope you will give us a shopping list when this project ends. @@hemmingsmotornews Don’t get me wrong. You and your team did a great job on the car and the whole build was inspirational to say the least. The burn out scene in the first video when the car was still original with grey stripes and grey/aluminum rims was the money shot. In my opinion, the grey interior doesn’t work with the gold accents. The interior needs to be tied in with the exterior now. Change the interior to black, add some Recaro seats with subtle gold stitching or piping, etc. Regards, Otto

Should have repainted it. Ya'll did literally everything else. Still, it looks really cool. Tough to beat a black sports car. I owned 2 black vettes in the day. Folks would yell "batmobile" as ya drive by.

@@hemmingsmotornews and honestly it's not worth it--it's as bad an air intake as the Buick Gran Sport nostrils, it won't need to let out that much hot air with all the aluminum, and you'll have to create rain gutters.

@@John-cg8hb yeah, boy, i've had that happen once--the TPI covers up the HEI kinda well if you keep the shield, but lucky for me on that particular vehicle i had a stick shift--the engine tried to die but i downshifted and wound the engine up like an alarm clock (I was on the way to work)--at 4,000 rpm there was enough spark to lance thru whatever water got in. not the best performance of course but it got me to where i could pull over and spray in some WD40 and then continue to work in 3rd gear.

Why not just of gone for the actual functional Hood louvers from tracspec? Would've looked way better than replacing the fake louvers.

We would've had to cut the hood, which is something we thought about - our concern was water drainage.

Not sure why every body goes max-mullet with these cars, I bought my '92 new-changing oil in it as I type this-and I don't remember mullets being a thing. Maybe that was in '82 when they came out. I bought mine in '93 at a dealership in Scottsvile, KY. It was one the very last Z28's made. I guess that fad had passed by then.

It would bother me that the louvres aren't functional. At least on the 5th generation ZL1 all the air intakes are fully functional and computational fluid dynamics designed and optimised to generate cooling and downforce.

They fill what was originally designed as functional dual NACA duct style scoops. When they switched to the TPI manifold it couldn't be made truly functional and having them as open vents would have been a warrenty nightmare. But I agree in that non-functional hood bits do sort of bother me.
