I go fishing with my friend. He says I have learning disability because I lose track on how many fish I catch compared to him. As 4 the social distancing... I’m always 6’ or more away from him. The problem is he always comes within that 6’ rona zone to invade my fishing hole because he is a terrible fisherman. But he doesn’t have many friends so continue to go with him. Surprised you don’t do good with white bass. For cut bait, they are my second choice behind giz shad, and my absolute favorite live bait for flathead. Don’t have skipjack where I am, there are some in the river a few hours south of me.

An extended handle crappie dip net net would up your skipjack catch and eliminate losing your lures. Jerking them stretches that mono and weakens it.

Question: can you fish live bait anchored to the bottom to fish it where you want instead of a float?

Some baits fish anchored better than others..bluegills and smaller baits goldfish and such can be anchored and don't tend to move much. you anchor a shad and it will be dead in minutes. It would take a heavy weight to keep that white bass in one place. The fact that the bait can move so much and cover so much ground tends to make them a more successful way if getting a flathead..if the fish don't find the bait, the bait may eventually find the fish..I am already bottom fishing anyways with cut baits..

You should get your self one of those little tangle-free trout nets for those skip Jack They will fall right in. I use them Sauger fishing. There always barley hooked.

I know where you’re at. Not gonna say it tho. But that place is a good spot for skips and white bass. All I’ve caught is dink cats in there lately tho. If you go up to where the cove goes into the main channel stay to the the left (if you’re leaving the ramp) that drop off has given me the bigger ones.
