My first message was preached at age 12 when the visiting preacher did not show up until late. It was entirely off the cuff from a familiar scripture passage. The hardest part then and now is not how to start well but how to finish powerfully and effectively. Thank you, Lane

It is amazing. When you start, it seems so impossible, that coupled with the thought “god why did you choose me, I WOULDNT even choose me…but after years and years of doing it it becomes second nature. Greatest advice our pastor gave us at college was for the next year, “preach from only one verse”. Not meaning you ONLY preach one verse for a year, but each time you preach, choose one verse to bring all of your message,subject + theme from. Ultimately he was steering us to be expositional in our study and preaching, and it definitely was beneficial. At first it seemed impossible, but now decades later we can preach for weeks on one word.

@@nikkyram6165 it honestly was some of the greatest advice I ever received. My old pastor (the one who gave me this advice) has many videos on here his name is Joey Wampler. But as I said at first, it seemed impossible. But within that year, we slowly learned how to pull a truth out of the text, build a message around the text explaining the truth, and then applying that truth with the text. Our pastor was huge into expositional preaching and staying biblical. After all these years, my messages still revolve around one verse. It is a process, which involves much prayer, and patience. I can remember when I first started I would preach a whole book in like 20 min, and thought there was no way I could get a whole message from one verse, now at my church we have just started working our way through Roman’s and I’ve been on Roman’s 1.1 for the past few weeks. I have preached 4 messages on only the first three words “ Paul a servant “. You can do it. Don’t seek to be a great preacher, just a servant. Tarry long at Jesus feet, humble yourselves, work hard to live Holy, and in due time Christ will exalt you.

I am a clergy on medical leave. I had a stroke in 2019 and I'm still in the healing process. I have not preached because I have been learning things over again. I feel like I'm back at the beginning stages of preaching. I was asked to preach at a special service at the end of the month. It is wonderful to see young men surrendering to the call of God on their life. I am 52 and just surrendered to preach. I have no idea what I am doing. I don’t know how to actually come up with a sermon. I have always had difficulty with comprehension… I often read something and have no idea what it says. The Bible is even harder to dig in and understand what it is saying.

Please understand that my comment is meant to be constructive and not just criticism. It seems a tad ironic for you to discuss, at length, the importance of sermon delivery, but then take nearly 9 and a half minutes to get to the topic of the video as offered in the title. I can appreciate the importance of introduction and of setting an expectation, but in the present atmosphere of task driven consumerism, taking so long to get to the content (which is apparently of prime importance) will have folks quickly moving on to another video that will answer their question or fulfill their need. For me, I’m wanting to learn to write sermon. The promise of 7 steps to do so is appealing and drew me in. But then, I had to get through an introduction that was more than a 3rd of the total video length. In addition to the introduction of this series, you also throw in advertising for your the books you’ve written. They may be terrific, I haven’t finished the video yet. I can’t help but think though that the protracted introduction only serves to dissuade the viewer from looking your books up. On the other hand, a quick “my name is...” and a statement of the topic satisfies the immediate desire of a viewer and lets you quickly get to the topic at hand. Given the solid delivery of the content, drop a very quick comment referring to an idea that is expanded on in one of your books. This may allow the video to be as concise as it can be while offering a promise of more in-depth exploration if someone invests in your book. Admittedly, my advise may be nothing more than pedantic drivel as I am no one know for speaking, authoring or video production. I’m just sharing some perspective that has been offered from podcast and KZbin tutorials on how to present a dynamic message.

I appreciate your taking the time to share! I'll take this into consideration for my future videos. To give you some of the intentionality behind why I do what I do in these videos... I do what is called "long-form" content. Much like a podcast that is meant to be like a conversation as thorough as possible and give the viewer the context they need to understand where I'm coming from before we jump into the steps. Perhaps I should have done a Step 0 or introductory video that lays some of the groundwork. But with all that said... my content is not for everyone. If it doesn't appeal to you, then I am actually MORE than okay if you skip to another video. I'd rather you find what you're looking for than stick with me longer than you'd like. My books have done really well. Especially the first one. I hear from pastors virtually every day who are benefiting from them so I plug them simply because I believe they can help preachers. Again, for those who want them. For those who are not interested, it's totally fine. Hope that helps. Thanks again for offering your perspective.

The tittle should be a hook within itself. When people see your tittle in should interest them, make them want to hear what this tittle is about, I like to uaed oxymoron and rhetorical question that cause the. To think. When God reveal the topic to you, it should be used as a guard for you, as you write your sermon should be in the same context as your sermon tittle don't contradict it, but you can contradict your tittle if it make sense in a twisted way, simple is better never seek to be too much when delivering the word, you're just a mail man the letter should be write by God deliver by you.
